A well thought out and presented critique of both spin clean and vinylstyl systems, I've been using the spin clean myself, and been reasonably happy with it, and I was thinking about giving this vinystyl a try. Thanks for the heads-up on the liquid that comes with the vinylstyl.

Great video. I have had this unit for a few months now. I use the spin clean solution as you suggested. When spinning the record I use the finger grips on the clamp instead of the outside of the record. I think this may put less pressure on the plastic spindles. But as u said you have done about 1000 records with no problems. I recently bought a record doctor vacuum cleaner system but still use the vinyl style first and then vacuum to suck out the gunk and to dry. My records sound amazing now.

I've used the Spin Clean for about a year or so now, and am very happy with it. When I get done washing the record, I put it on a hand towel to partially dry it, then put about five or six records on a drying rack and air dry them with a fan. Never had any problems collecting more dirt or water. BTW, this Texas guy has been to Perth, WA and thoroughly loved it.

Nice video, very informative. Looks like a decent system. Personally I have a Spin Clean (2 of them) and honestly I have never had an issue with labels getting wet and I have probably cleaned close to 1,000 records. I also dry off with the microfiber towels that came with it and have never had a static issue. If I use both Spin Cleans I have one with the solution and the other with distilled water only to rinse anything off. I'll do it that way when I find used records that are really dirty. Sometimes I will use a fan to dry records but have never used a rack (as you said, it takes up too much room). If I had seen this first I might have bought it but I paid 49.99 for my Spin Clean when they had them on sale (I think they lower the price of them around Black Friday so I bought myself a Christmas present). Just remember - when cleaning records NEVER use tap water. Buy a jug of distilled water (since I work in a Lab I just refill them while at work with the distilled water we make). You can pick up a gallon for about 75 cents.

I use a Spin Clean and I have never had an issue with any label getting wet. Initially it was a concern but has never happened. If people find their labels are getting wet it may be that they are putting too much distilled water in the unit. The Spin Clean also has much wider surface area on their brushes so there is more contact area on the album. I would assume this would assist greatly in better cleaning the album. The cleaning pads on the Spin Clean are very fine as well and I find they get deep into the grooves. I can’t speak on the thickness of the brush fibre on the VinylStyl as I have never seen them. I also find the wiping cloths to work just fine albeit they do get wet quite quickly. I have cleaned some old used albums that were quite dirty and not confident the Spin Clean could do the job (these ones I clean twice) and have had very good results. I am certainly not trying to undermine the VinylStyl but rather express my experience with the Spin Clean. I find the Spin Clean to be a very good, inexpensive product. But to each their own.

Thanks for the video, I've used mine for about 2 years, maybe 500 or so cleanings with no issues and normally very positive results. I use my own cleaning solution 11oz distilled-1oz 99% alcohol and 2 drops of fotoflow. What Id like to find is another base to use as a rinse (I now use glass bread pan filled with distilled water). Also it would be nice to have some sort of raised arm so you can let some of the excess cleaning solution drip back into unit without holding it. I do use the Vinyl Vac after cleaning. Normally, only 1 vac rotation per side (to prevent static) and then I let album air dry in the included drying rack. I would put this system up against any of the 300-400 dollar record cleaning machines. I am hopeful that I see some good reviews of the new Humminguru ultrasonic record cleaner which I would use in conjunction with this unit, as I buy a lot of used vinyl.

Hi, i have 2 VinylStyl units now, bought 5 months ago when on special by local retailer in Melbourne Australia. I use one for pre-clean rinse before ultrasonic clean and the other for post-clean rinse. have to say it is excellent. I agree with not using the Vinylstyl fluid, it has a poor version of gruve-lube in it, wrong concentration I feel. i use my own fluid which has no alcohol but contains triton/tergitol mix, a proprietary quat, flocculent (like SpinClean) and an eco clean agent. The fluid works super well in both VinylStyl and ultrasonic. stay safe and well.....enjoy the music.

I have both a spin clean and a Vevor Ultrasonic Cleaner. I stop using the Spin Clean as it was too time consuming, especially since I have almost 5000 records. The Vevor does a great job as it leaves tons of evidence in the tank, plus cleaning 8 records at a time and with the addended fan attachment, it dries as it spins! And it also comes with a drying rack that holds 16 records.

I have the Spin Clean machine -- the deluxe clear, see-through version which is supposed to let you see the dirt from the records falling to the bottom of the bin. Unfortunately, witnessing the dirt falling has never worked for me, but the Spin clean machine works great on my LPs and 45s. The labels on my 45s and LP vinyl never get wet on my Spin Clean machine. Before Spin Clean, I used to wash my vinyl in the kitchen sink under the faucet with Dawn. Naturally, my labels always got wet but it never hurt them. Just never rub the label on a record -- especially a wet label -- as it will tear, for sure. After cleaning my records with the Spin Clean, I dry them off using microfiber cloths (the non-scratching type) purchased from Amazon. I then let the mostly-dry-but-damp records sit in a dish-draining rack to dry thoroughly before returning them to brand new sleeves.

I have a VPI 16.5 WR which does a great job. However, some older really dirty records don't quiet down. My solution is Spin Clean with Record Doctor V just after washing. Record Doctor will handle a wet disc drying one side then the other. My VPI would contaminate the second side while the first side is being dried. Thanks for your review.

I've been using one of these for about 3 years. I've probably cleaned 3 or 4 thousand records with it. I make my own record cleaning solution by the gallon. I also take a couple of extra steps. I have a cheap knock off basin that I use as a rinse with just plain distilled water. I also have a shop vac and vinyl vac attachment for it. Clean with the vinyl styl, vaccum, rinse in the 2nd basin, and then vacuum again. There is no need for air drying. It works well. take care.

I’m getting ready to upgrade my system and getting more into care of records as well and I decided to do the same things you mentioned here I watched reviews of the spin clean and the thing that worried me was that the spin clean is so tight it can wear away the edging of records as they are cleaned but I loved the fluid found the vinyl style deep clean liked that the case was wider but wasn’t thrilled with the idea of its fluid so I mixed the two

I bought the Vinyl Styl too after doing research on record cleaning. It's cheaper than the Spin Clean, I like the goat's hair brushes, and the drying rack made a lot of sense. Then I just bought the Spin Clean solution and drying rags. It did a really good job with about 200 records. Great design and price too. I might try to get a vinyl vac and portable shop vac to dry in the future. You know, before I save up for an ultrasonic cleaner.

Get extra brushes, and you can wash them distilled water. Use a vacuum base machine like the Record Doctor to suck off the fluid inst of air drying. Spray your fluid on instead of filling the tub. Use an enzymatic fluid like Audio Intelligent Vinyl Solutions. They have a rinse that leaves no residue.

Thanks for this. It's just what I need. I have the Disco Antistat, which is fine, to a point, but the Vinyl Styl is clearly superior. First of all, both products use the goat hair brushes, which aren't just better than the pads used in other models, but ideal for the job. However, I've found it difficult to impossible to remove them from my Disco Antistat. From your video, the Vinyl Styl wins on that score. Secondly, the Vinyl Styl label protectors are obviously superior to the ones provided with the Antistat, as they have the additional rubber o-ring seals and top seal. My labels get wet 90% of the time. Good advice about the cleaning fluid. What were they thinking?! The Antistat cleaning fluid is fine, as is the alternative I use, from Vinyl Shelter.

Great! Thanks for the Video. I was looking to get a Disco Antistat cleaner. It is meant to be better than the Spinclean because it's Camel hair brushes get deeper into the grooves vs the Spinclean felt pads. But the brushes are not replaceable in the Disco. So the Vinyl style is a far better option!! I have a Spinclean but I don't trust the felt pads. They squeese very tight against the Vinyl. I felt a dirty record would get scratched rubbing the dirt in rather than cleaning out the dirt. So I have cleaned my records with a brush first and then used the spinclean for rinsing. I do notice bits of torn off felt sitting at the bottom of the tank which is not nice. I have been using Todd the Vinyl Junkie Vinyl Zyme for cleaning. It works well. I took a chance to buy a very very dirty original UK pressing of Led Zeppelin IV for $50. It's cleaned up very well and would be worth $200 now. But I have got no record 100% silent yet. I am a believer in one chemical can not clean all the contaminants off vinyl. So I will add the Vinyl Style to my cleaning kit and do a two stage clean from now on. I will be getting L'art Duson for the second stage clean and see how that goes. Thanks heaps for the video! My decision is now complete. I could have stressed for days over this.

Good point about potentially scratching records with the tight pads. (If there is abrasive debris in the grooves.) This was a great review video, but that was my one hangup, that the brushes seem so weak, but... I guess just spin it enough and you should be good? I'll probably give this one a try.
@thebluevu1097

Yes, particularly dirty records get many many spins. I’ve had some really bad ones take upwards of 5+ minutes, but normally about a minute each. Once you get used to it you’ll find that you can tell when a record is finished by the way the water sheets off. If it clings to the sides it’s not ready, if it (relatively) quickly sheets off evenly then it’s good to go.

I've used a Spin Clean for years. The label issue is a fact, but only sometimes. 90% of the time, the label stays bone dry when I wash records. Something about the surface tension of the cleaning fluid I think. Regardless, this system has 100% label protection. As far as the brushes go, I am curious if they are as effective as the SC pads. Because even with the pads on there, I sometimes have to go through more than once to get a perfectly clean record. Funny enough, it seems that combining the two products will make for a "perfect" system. The Spin Clean tub and pads and fluid with the Vinyl Styl label protector. It's only $50 at Urban Outfitters as a I write this, so I might pick one up and see if the label protector works with the Spin Clean tub.

Greetings from Mexico, Down Under! I've had the Pacific Mailer Record Washer (also sold as Recor Pro, it's the black one) for some time. Found three problems outright; You have to grab the border of the disk to spin it and the velour pads don't reach deep enough into the grooves for a deep clean, last but not least, although they suggest reusing the filtered (not didtilled) water with a few capfuls of the provided solution mix, they didn't give a passing glimpse at how to recover it, something that VinylStil certainly did, albeit defectively. Not finding a noticeable difference with my *_acrylic label protector clamp_*_ plus double filtered water wash and dish soap_ applied with an *edge paint pad* (available for a couple $ at paint stores) in the kitchen sink *method*_ I ordered the *VinylStyl Deep Groove system.* Since I've been using successfully my own recipe consisting of bi-distilled water (from the local pharmacy), natural cane alcohol 96° (also from the pharnacy) and 0.5% Ilfoton surfactant (from my darkroom) that can be substituted by a a few ml per liter of windex or any similar glass or dish cleaning liquid, I haven't yet opened the supplied solution and thanks to you I will not. Now, the VinylStyl Deep Groove sysyem beats the aforementioned system/method hands down. After just a dozen records, the solution is ready to be filtered (with a large funnel and coffee maker paper filters, replenished and reused, going 36 records per 1/2 liter of solution before discarding. The amount of grime it takes out and caught in the filters is impressive (again, I cannot vouch for the included solution as I've never used it). My discrepancies with your video: 1. I do not spin the record by grabbing or pushing on the edge; that's what the indents on the clamp are for, you use both hands and you turn with your fingers, never touching the record. 2. My experience with the brushes is that they can slide in rather easy but they are a b..ch to remove. In my case the metal spines seem to be deffectively pressed and I need to leave a fair amount of them out lest I have to grab them by the bristles to pull out of their chanels. IMHO, a cutout at the top the channel flaps is in order, something I intend to do with a Dremel tool. 3. A plastic mounted brush, probably made with the same carbon fiber (although stiffer) that they use on their anti-static brush might work better and last longer. As you mention 300 records per pair of brushes don't sound like so much. The pouring channels on the reservoir are poorly designed. I had to get me a toy beach bucket to catch the sused solution to filter and reuse. Ditto a suitable sized funnel. The one supplied tho it works all right is a bad joke. Better that than nothing, tho. In all, a good review that wold have been much better with a workflow demo. Take care and thanks!

Greetings my southern neighbor. A lot of good information in your post but I want to highlight your mention of the darkroom surfactant. For those not in the know a bottle of this stuff will last for a very long time if anyone plans to do a DIY solution. With various thickness in vinyls I find the rollers at either end that spin the disc can be a little stiff and occasionally pop out of the groove. Nice video. But I would have loved it if you demonstrated the cleaning process. Do you just run the records through the cleaning process and then let them air dry in the rack? You don’t rinse them in any way? I’ve found that most formulated washes leave some sort of residue...
@thebluevu1097
@thebluevu1097 4 года назад
I don't rinse but there's a couple tricks to it. Firstly i change the water often, usually after each batch of 8, if they are all new records then maybe I'll go two batches, if they are really dirty it may be as few as three records. The other thing, and possibly most important, is that I continue cleaning until the water sheets off the record. If you watch it while spinning around you'll find that if the record is still dirty the water will hold in the grooves, after some extra soaking and multiple spin cycles the water will start to quickly and evenly sheet off the record surface. I've had some particularly dirty records that may take up to ten minutes of cleaning and soaking before the water sheets off evenly. New records typically only need a few spins and are done in no time. Doing this I've never had issues with residue being left behind.

@@thebluevu1097 Thanks for your reply. I might give this a shot. I also worry about reusing the water after a few dirty records. Maybe a wash or a rinse with tap water in the sink just before might help if they have a lot of dust. Using the record cleaner directly after should clear the vinyl of any harmful minerals or additives in the tap water.

after taking off the center hub, does the liquid drip on to the label while it dries? Or do you have a trick to keep it from dripping on the label? Seems like you need to clean one at a time and wait till it dries, then remove the hub.
@thebluevu1097
@thebluevu1097 3 года назад
No drips. If you’ve cleaned them long enough to get a smooth even sheeting action of the water coming off the record then it will almost entirely remove itself. Lift the record out slowly to allow time for the water to drain off, then give it a shake or two before removing the center hub. I’ve never had an issue with the labels getting wet after removing the center hub.

I might take an album, run it through one, then run it through the other to see if any additional dirt comes out. Then reversing the two to see if it’s the result of one over the other or if it’s just a matter of washing it twice (and running another record through twice on the same system to verify). Open to suggestions.

@thebluevu1097
@thebluevu1097 3 года назад
I change the water as needed, usually 8 records is about the average. I’ve had dirty batches that didn’t last 4, and clean ones that went 16. Just don’t leave the water in overnight, I know a lot of people will do one record and try to save it for the next time, but this will lead to rust forming on the brushes.

Having used the SpinClean, i will say it is good, but, if you put a very dirty record into the SpinClean the grit can get stuck in the brushes which then causes a circular scratch on the record. Took this up with the store i bought the SpinClean, they claimed it is not possible, and said the record must have been damaged before being put into the SpinClean. It was not. The disadvantage to the Knost is that the label protector still allows water in and the brushes are not removable.. the Vinyl Styl seems to better in all these areas. Another benefit it is cheaper then the Knosti and SpinClean......Might have to try it.

That’s something I hadn’t thought to mention, you have a good point. Living in Florida I come across gritty records on occasion (sand everywhere). I always check the sleeve and if there’s anything gritty I’ll do a rinse under the faucet and/or carefully brush it off before the Spinclean.

@@thebluevu1097 Hi, I bought two VinylStyl units, mainly because a retailer here in Melbourne , Australia had them on special for $99aud instead of $170aud. One for Cleaning and one for rinsing. I gave the spinclean i had to a guy i know who uses one already, but i did tell him about grit getting stuck in the pads, he said he had it happen, so he cleans the pads after every records. Excess work, but understandable. one good thing about lockdown here is it gives me time to clean lots of records. Enjoy the music......

Did you use the spin clean liquid by it self or did you add distilled water with it

@thebluevu1097
@thebluevu1097 3 года назад
First indication is a decrease in efficiency. You’ll find you are needing several rotations before the water starts sheeting off the record evenly. A visual inspection will also reveal some fraying on the tips. The other thing I notice is a lack of resistance when spinning the record, if it moves too easily then it’s time. I’ve been averaging about 300 records per pair of brushes, but it really depends on how much cleaning is needed. When I buy collections from random people it will wear things down quicker, if I’ve been doing a lot of new records they will last longer.

Never, ever use Vinyl Styl's so-called cleaning solution. I agree with the author of this video. it adds a film to the LP that deadens the audio, and builds up on my stylus. Speaking for me, I've invested in a well-known ultrasonic cleaner, and it is far better than either Spin Clean or Vinyl Styl. YMMV.

Ongoing operational cost is much higher with this product vs. Spin Clean. You're having to dump Vinyl Styl's solution bottle whereas Spin Clean 1 bottle yields 400 records. And the filter cloth is useless.

Excellent video but why didn't you take a dirty record and wipe the loose dirt or dust off with a soft cloth and then demonstrate your machine's effectiveness? Also doing a before and after sound test would be beneficial. It seems nobody doe this in their Demo videos. They always use shiny nice looking records.

Spin Clean spent more money on advertising and getting their machine into the hands of reviewers and spending the time and money on audio shows. I've never had issues with getting labels wet with a spin clean. The Vinyl Styl or the German made Disco Antistat on the other hand are superior cleaning systems. It's the brushes. Those goat hair brushes get deeper and remove much more debris than the pads in the Spin Clean system. They clean(scrub) the record grooves by attrition similar to a cavitation machines(ultrasonic) explosive bubbles which is especially important for removing mold release oils from brand new records, something the pads in a Spin Clean WILL NOT. I like the basic design of the Spin Cleans function; no caps to attach to the lp, the simple rollers to adjust record size. I just wish that they would change those pads out to the goat hair bristles. If you're still keeping up with this video, please let me know where you can get relaplacement brushes. I can't find them anywhere. I want to attempt to modify the Spin Clean pads with the brushes as a project. Otherwise it will just sit in a closet unused. I did finally brake down and bought a Degritter. Incredible in every way but that's a whole other story. Watch Paul Rigby's videos on all of these machines plus vinyl formulas( apparently their are hundreds used by record companies) plus his surfactants videos and what he uses instead of the cleaning products that typically come with these machines. Some of the most most scholarly, well researched written articles and videos out their. He writes for the most respected British audio journals( I think superior to the typical American rags).

My concern is that I wonder if the brushes might scratch the records. I understand that there will be a bunch of people who will tell me I’m crazy for wondering about this, but I’ve found in my experience that it’s better to err on the side of caution instead of erring on the side of ignorance. So I ask!!! I’ve had my Spin Clean several months now, and I’ve been very happy with it. I don’t use it on every record, just the really dirty ones. It always cleans the gunk off the record, and noticeably improves the sound. I don’t understand why people are concerned about how tight the pads are. The problem is, if the pads were any looser, then undoubtedly these same people would complain that they weren’t tight enough. My experience has been, yes, they’re tight, and sometimes with certain records that are thicker, it’s been a bit of a struggle to get the record out. But I always do, and no record has ever been damaged or had dirt rubbed into it from the pads. As long as you clean the pads after every use, excess dirt or dust isn’t an issue. It’s like everything else: keep it clean and it will do its job. But I will say that this system has some very clever parts included in it. I like the bottom coming off and becoming a drying rack. The label covers are nice too, but like others on this forum, I’ve never had a major issue with water getting on the labels in my Spin Clean. What little if any is easily and quickly wiped off. So to each his own. The important thing is that we’re keeping our records clean so we can continue to get the best sound from them for many years to come!!!
@thebluevu1097
@thebluevu1097 2 года назад
Just to address the scratching fear, I’ve done about a thousand records with this system and never damaged an album. I have nothing against the spinclean but the additional features of this system just make the entire chore of cleaning records much easier. Ultimately the important message is to clean your records, too many people complain about surface noise and static when a proper wet wash will help with these issues. Cheers!

If you want to buy crap made overseas go ahead the labels aren't going to get that wet anyway and you wipe the records off to begin with so if he doing anything on the label you could just blot it plus I like the idea of the spin clean being able to see what it's in the tank there's a reason they sell a lot of them spin clean works and me person I have a problem something that's not made in the United States and spin clean is made in the United States

Look at the vinyl under a magnifying glass, you'll see that those brushes leave particles of themselves embedded in the grooves.

I recommend using TERGIKLEEN, Tergitol-based fluid concentrate. It's available on Amazon.com. You must rinse the records after giving bath to the records with DISTILLED water, so there is no any residue from the cleaning solution. ALWAYS use distilled water. I hope this helps, record lovers.
