Great video. I agree with you about Stanley Turrentine. I'm missing only 1 or 2 or his final Blue Note titles in my collection (though I have heard them all), and he's probably the Blue Note artist I most associate with the dreaded pop covers. Obviously, all these guys are talented, but I feel like Stanley found his niche and never strayed from the formula that worked for him. As for Search for the New Land (also one of my favorites, and possibly Lee's finest), at the time of the recording Alfred Lion was fairly obsessed with finding tracks that could duplicate the success of Song for My Father or The Sidewinder. So when an artist didn't have a "funky" or "soulful" track that would be likely to engage a wider audience or even hit the pop charts, the sessions were often delayed or shelved. That's what I've read, anyway. I wasn't there. 😉
Was going to suggest Rough N Tumble but then you showed it. I'll add Action and Mode for Joe to the never ending want list! Just got Henderson's Power To the People, although not a BN its another excellent release.
