Wow - I was 12 in 1975. DEFINITELY the beginning of discovering music that was "my own". Mostly collected 45s but this was around the time when I started buying a few albums (or getting them for Christmas) Top 5 Artists for me in 1975 (not in order): 1- Tony Orlando and Dawn (who I saw in concert in May of '75- coincidentally saw their farewell concert this Friday!). Loved their greatest hits album 2- The Who I discovered a TON of artists via the movie Tommy, the movie and soundtrack album was a real obsession- that was the first time I saw The Who as well as Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and Elton John. 3- Bee Gees Jive Talkin' was the first time I heard them (I went on to collect all their albums & first saw them live in 1979) 4 & 5- Barry Manilow and Elton John (my main inspirations for taking my piano playing seriously). I saw Barry live in 1978 and Elton a few times, including his farewell in Gillette in '22. I listen to them all still and it's kind of amazing to think that I've seen them all live!!!

REO Speedwagon, too. My first rock album was a K-Tel compilation called Rock ‘82, and it had Billy Squire - The Stroke, REO Speedwagon - Take It on the Run, Rush - Tom Sawyer, Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe, Hewy Lewis, Pat Benatar, Prism, Kim Karnes, Hall & Oats, and a few more. .38 Special… It was a great album to get started in rock. Open Arms was on that, too. That’s a great Journey album.

When I was 12 and 13 it was only 45s, that was all o could afford with my paperroute money. My mom was all about big band and my dad was classical. It’s wasn’t until I got a job at the grocery store that I could afford a record album.

My parents were also of the jazz generation. No rock until my dad said he liked Bryan Adams’s voice, and so we got him the Cuts Like a Knife cassette. Not sure how much he really liked it though. There was a guy in my high school who really loved The Doors. That was his favourite band. I was thinking about that Billy Squire album a year or two ago. I always liked The Stroke and was wondering if I should buy the CD.

I hope to get some time and jump in on the thread , I talked about that Billy Squire LP in Album & Concert video I did. It is packed with songs and sounds great. Those K-Tell comps a re fun to collect. Yea Bob Seger was on top then with REO too. I think we are about the same age as also could say Escape as I would see that tour did a video on that as well. I was 12 in 1978, but my musical tastes were pretty far out in left field for your average 12 year old, thanks to my dad. Horslips (Irish folk rock) Jade Warrior (pysch rock in the early 70's, weird new age prog in the mid 70's) Bo Diddley Howllin Wolf ABBA My musical tastes changed pretty radically a year later when I discovered disco/funk/soul in 1979. I still have all those records. But I still have records/comics from when I was 5, I'm weird that way.

There has to be photographic evidence of MGK decked out in that white John Travolta number. I like my rock pure with no additives. I was scared of Kiss until I was a teenager. As soon as Gene did the blood it was all too much. I had a comp called 1981 Over The Top & it opened with The Stroke. Whatever happened to that guy? I could be wrong but Journey didn't seem to make a big splash in Australia. Nice idea. Cheers...KOS

Hi from New Zealand. I was 12 in 1972 and 13 in 1973. I remember Glam Rock music in that time. Mainly British groups abd singers such as T Rex, Slade, Mott the Hoople, Suzi Quatro, Gary Glitter. I dont think any of them were big artists in the USA. American singer Roberta Flack had two hits The First time , ever i saw your Face , and Killing me Softly. I like her. I wasnt buying any albums then. From Carl.

@@vikingbrace Cocoa Beach was the destination a few times and yes, running into the water was necessary! 😆After that trip in 7th grade my parents did some different trips like Dominican Republic and Jamaica and I stayed home. My grandparents would come down from Toronto and stay with me to keep an eye on things. They were also really fun people. When my parents retired they went to Florida for probably 10 years every Winter around New Years for 3 months. My dad loved the beach, just as I do.
