1970 was the year for me, I turned 14, and that is when music really hit me. Up until that point, my loves were; 1) baseball, 2) my neighbor Sue who was the first girl I kissed, 3) baseball and my neighbor Sue. But I'll hop on this
Wow - I was 12 in 1975. DEFINITELY the beginning of discovering music that was "my own". Mostly collected 45s but this was around the time when I started buying a few albums (or getting them for Christmas) Top 5 Artists for me in 1975 (not in order): 1- Tony Orlando and Dawn (who I saw in concert in May of '75- coincidentally saw their farewell concert this Friday!). Loved their greatest hits album 2- The Who I discovered a TON of artists via the movie Tommy, the movie and soundtrack album was a real obsession- that was the first time I saw The Who as well as Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and Elton John. 3- Bee Gees Jive Talkin' was the first time I heard them (I went on to collect all their albums & first saw them live in 1979) 4 & 5- Barry Manilow and Elton John (my main inspirations for taking my piano playing seriously). I saw Barry live in 1978 and Elton a few times, including his farewell in Gillette in '22. I listen to them all still and it's kind of amazing to think that I've seen them all live!!!
REO Speedwagon, too. My first rock album was a K-Tel compilation called Rock ‘82, and it had Billy Squire - The Stroke, REO Speedwagon - Take It on the Run, Rush - Tom Sawyer, Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe, Hewy Lewis, Pat Benatar, Prism, Kim Karnes, Hall & Oats, and a few more. .38 Special… It was a great album to get started in rock. Open Arms was on that, too. That’s a great Journey album.
I don't make videos, so can't contribute that way.But what I can remember from back then. Was the Partridge family-love them as a kid. The turtles, Elton John, Kiss, Peter Framton.
Billy Squire, that is one we share for sure. That album is so good. I loved that as a kid. The companion album for that for me was Styx Paradise Theater. Those two were so good!
Hey Mike! Love this video and hearing all the stories behind the tunes/albums. I fell in love with music at 16 when I picked up the guitar. Grew up on most of the stuff my Dad did too. Might have to hop on this thread!
My parents were also of the jazz generation. No rock until my dad said he liked Bryan Adams’s voice, and so we got him the Cuts Like a Knife cassette. Not sure how much he really liked it though. There was a guy in my high school who really loved The Doors. That was his favourite band. I was thinking about that Billy Squire album a year or two ago. I always liked The Stroke and was wondering if I should buy the CD.
When I was 12 and 13 it was only 45s, that was all o could afford with my paperroute money. My mom was all about big band and my dad was classical. It’s wasn’t until I got a job at the grocery store that I could afford a record album.
Awesome video Mike! Thanks for the shoutout! I’m already doing something very similar to this , my next series video will be covering these years! Cool choices and great job my friend 👍🤘🤘
Cool thread Mike, i'll try and join this thread over the next day or two. The Beatles came into my life at 14. I'm certain of that but - there were some great bands in my life before then - thanks to my brothers cd collection!
Hey there Mike. I added my video, have it up as a response! Hope all is well with you! Looks like we were 12 and 13 around the same time! Love the K-Tel! And Saturday Night Fever! And of course Kiss!
I hope to get some time and jump in on the thread , I talked about that Billy Squire LP in Album & Concert video I did. It is packed with songs and sounds great. Those K-Tell comps a re fun to collect. Yea Bob Seger was on top then with REO too. I think we are about the same age as also could say Escape as I would see that tour did a video on that as well. They all are fun albums.
Nothing wrong with REO! I saw them a couple years ago at Foxwoods and they were fantastic. Plus they have all of their original members except for their lead guitarist, a mere lad who just joined the band in 1989! 😆He's also from Framingham.
Let's see.. At 12 it was 1966 so.. Stones, Beatles, Love, Animals, Byrds 13 in 1967..Jefferson Airplane, Doors, Mothers Of Invention, Velvet Underground and Nico, Donovan There was so much in those years and I was crazy about all of it! Parents were older. Mom died in 1966. Difficult times that was helped by music.
Mike, I can just picture your dad going into Sam’s to pick up that Kiss album. I wasn’t buying records at 12 or 13, but I’ll see what I can do. Cheers.
Interesting thread. I was listening to top 40 at that age but it was probably a couple years later when I started getting into music. Those hit collection types were part of my early purchases. K-Tel could draw you in.
Hi there Mike. New subscriber here. I was brought here via Steve from All the World. Really cool thread idea that I'm going to attempt in the near future on my own channel. While I'm much younger than yourself, I have to say that I do like Journey and REO.. guilty Pleasures for sure. Cheers from Canada! Darryl.
Hi from New Zealand. I was 12 in 1972 and 13 in 1973. I remember Glam Rock music in that time. Mainly British groups abd singers such as T Rex, Slade, Mott the Hoople, Suzi Quatro, Gary Glitter. I dont think any of them were big artists in the USA. American singer Roberta Flack had two hits The First time , ever i saw your Face , and Killing me Softly. I like her. I wasnt buying any albums then. From Carl.
I was 12 in 1978, but my musical tastes were pretty far out in left field for your average 12 year old, thanks to my dad. Horslips (Irish folk rock) Jade Warrior (pysch rock in the early 70's, weird new age prog in the mid 70's) Bo Diddley Howllin Wolf ABBA My musical tastes changed pretty radically a year later when I discovered disco/funk/soul in 1979. I still have all those records. But I still have records/comics from when I was 5, I'm weird that way.
i wish i could participate in this but now that i’m on the road i cant show any records unless its stuff i buy. but for me at that age it was def The Who Faces Dances, Billy Joel Glads Houses, Flash Gordon soundtrack, Popeye soundtrack (yeh im being honest) and prob that Doors Greatest Hits.
There has to be photographic evidence of MGK decked out in that white John Travolta number. I like my rock pure with no additives. I was scared of Kiss until I was a teenager. As soon as Gene did the blood it was all too much. I had a comp called 1981 Over The Top & it opened with The Stroke. Whatever happened to that guy? I could be wrong but Journey didn't seem to make a big splash in Australia. Nice idea. Cheers...KOS
Great idea for a thread. I’m having trouble finding time watching and making videos but I’ll try to jump on this. I mean it’s Mike from MGK for Christ’s sake! Love the stories. You know Sven will do this one but he won’t really stick to 12-13. He’s kind of a douche like that with threads😂. So you were at CoCo Beach at 13?? Bet you had to run into the water an awful lot… Awesome video!
@@vikingbrace Cocoa Beach was the destination a few times and yes, running into the water was necessary! 😆After that trip in 7th grade my parents did some different trips like Dominican Republic and Jamaica and I stayed home. My grandparents would come down from Toronto and stay with me to keep an eye on things. They were also really fun people. When my parents retired they went to Florida for probably 10 years every Winter around New Years for 3 months. My dad loved the beach, just as I do.
I have seen a few responses to this thread and I obviously forgot to leave a comment on your video (age-related memory loss) I I think I only had about 5 records when I was 12 or 13, and I am not sure if I still own any of them. Maybe? I usually listened to my older sister's records, the radio, or whatever my dad was listening to. So, I will have to think about this. . .
I could either show all the cool edgy rekkids that came out when I was 12 years old but I didn't actually discover until I was 19 or 49 years old, or the music I actually was listening to in 1981-82. Unlike you, I had young parents so stuff from the 60s/early 70s was their music. I'll try to respond in the next week or so.
