Veruca's parents are horrible, but it's a mixture of love and neglect. They just don't know how to parenting and think that by giving their daughter everything she wants she will be happy (and probably out of their hairs). The father learned his lesson in the end and finally said no for the first time to his brat. For Veruca's annoyance toward Violet, it's perfectly understandable. She's right next to someone who's chewing that damn gum 24 hours a day. That would annoy me too. Even when I was little, I pitied Violet. Her mother clearly lives through her. They wear the same clothes, too old for Violet and too young for her, same haircut, and only worries about her daughter winning the first prizes, as if Violet was an extension of herself and her daughter's victories were her victories. It's not pride but toxicity. I seriously think Violet's mom is the worst of the lot because all the other parents were afraid for their children, except this horrible woman. She is only worried that there is no new trophy in the house. Her daughter was a trophy, and now she's no longer fit to be seen in public. If this girl wasn't fictional, I would be worried about her home life now that she no longer fits the demands of her narcissistic mother.

I love how extremely different the kids end up. Like Veruca just has some trash on her but Violet is blue and flexible for the rest of her life and Mike is like 15 feet tall and flat.

I love the original actresses in Gene’s version of this but these two really brought out the toxicity of these characters. The original Veruca would protest and threaten to throw a fit if she didn’t get her way. This one already knew she would ultimately get what she wanted no questions asked. That’s pure evil. It’s sad this was Veruca’s actresses only film. She had a lot of potential.
