The war didn’t make Violet emotionless, she just never considered other people’s lives outside of what they were to her. Killing people was like killing animals. This job showed her that everyone has their own dreams, fears, aspirations, and losses, just like she does.

I'm glad you picked up that even with reduced expressivity you can still get a feel for what's going on. Throughout the entire process of the show the directors and animators agonized constantly over getting the subtlety of facial expression just right

I like how you are not giving up on Gilbert) when I watched it for the first time, in the 1st episode when Claudia was at the hospital, I was like "Ooops, Major is dead for sure". And that's why for me this anime became the story of Violet learning how to live WITHOUT him, his orders, and that the life was still worth living.

I’ve seen this idea before but I think this anime is one of my favorite displays. Everyone has their story. Everyone will have someone who will miss them. Everyone will have someone they want to see one last time. By fighting for your loved ones, you will unwittingly take away those of others.
