Hi guys!
My name is Amber, thanks for watching. I’m a private music teacher in Philadelphia and this is some general info about the violin that is covered in a first lesson. I hope it’s helpful. Please visit my website below for info about my studio and lessons.
www.ViolinViolaMasterclass.com
If you’re looking for a new violin, check out www.SharMusic.com for a beginner outfit $200-500.
If you’d like a nicer beginner violin, I always go with my students to find the perfect violin and bow. David Michie’s Violin Shop here in the city is the best place to find that. $1500-2500 for a beginner violin outfit. Don’t buy anything that price without trying it out first, preferably with your teacher. You also don't need to start with anything that expensive, as you study your ear will develop and your ability to hear and feel out what you prefer will be much greater a few months or even a year down the line. :)
Recommended materials...
Wittner Hypo allergenic side mount chin rest
Kun Original shoulder rest
Korg TM 50 metronome tuner combo

Hello, im Ash from Yorkshire. I am 31 and just started playing the violin in January this year and so far I have found it to be quite rewarding. I really enjoy a challenge and performing repetitive actions and so I spend many hours practicing scales but you have taught me-- with the videos I have seen-- to focus on my bowing technique and so now I have started taking extra time to just practice simple bowing. I am grateful for your wisdom and I find you to be very charming and educational to watch!

I was given a violin on my 70th birthday by my husband as a joke I guess. He knew I always wanted to learn how to play the violin. Sadly he died unexpectedly 10 days after. I never touched the violin since. That was 2 years ago. Today, I got it out of it's case, took it to be turned and thought I would give it ago. Glad I did! I found your video. I do play Piano and I'm hoping to learn just enough to be able to serenade myself and my two little dachshund doggies. At least they won't complain. Maybe hide or howl .. perhaps even join in. Thank you for this video its a great help to this lonely old girl. :-) You are very pretty and pleasant to work with. Thank you Amber.

Nice intro. I'm a 50 year old man who is just now picking up the violin. I only have a little piano experience from elementary school. I have an instructor lined up starting next month. In the meantime I've picked up a student 4/4 violin from a very reputable shop in Columbus, OH and am trying to learn a little from you tube and hopefully not develop too may bad habits before my official lessons start. Incidentally I used to live in Philadelphia a number of years ago. Lived in NE philly but worked in the U-Penn area...

Hi Amber! Its been a good 5 months since I ve practiced on either of my violins. I ran accross a vlog the other day by an English gentleman who says to slack off on all strings but the one you are tuning. That made a world of difference! I practiced the turkey trot and slow molley with another teacher over the cell phone and was able to sound exactly like they sounded. At the time I was using A=438hz. I was astounded! I was matching the instructors tone verbatum. Im still in awe about it. But alack alas! My A string unravelled yesterday! So I ve got to throw on a brand new set before I play my practice violin. Its just a chinese plywood violin, but Ive replaced the original soundpost with a corner block from an old Hitachi record player. I think its maple but cant prove it. All I know is it was sounding beautiful two days ago and I think I should leave the soundpost alone untill it falls again. I have another violin which is built locally here on the west coast. I thought it was ash but have been told by a luthier that it ismaple with adirondak spruce. Last summer.I was playing the opening to Sibilius by ear. I felt an accomplishment. It was there that I stopped practicing for the winter. Ive played some since but the Sibelius was what made me most proud. My better violin needs to be played I havent toched it much so I will see if I can apply what I learned two days ago and tune it up. All for now. Sincerely chris e. GRANTS PASS OR. USA. THANKS AMBER, LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE STUDY FROM YOUR VIDIOS. BYE!😅

I'm 33 years old. Watching twoset violin made me interested in playing a musical instrument, but your videos pushed me to go buy a violin. I ordered one online, but with all this quarantine stuff and being in Saudi Arabia, it looks like I will wait quite a bit before I can actually start learning.

Thanks so much, Amber. I’ve watched a lot of instructional videos and this is the first time I’ve ever heard that there are different sizes of violins! Being 6’2” and having difficulty sorting out where the notes are (in spite of having played guitar for decades), I now worry that I’ve purchased a violin that’s too small. I guess this speaks to the quality of the store I bought it from if they didn’t mention sizing! Oh well, I just love the sound and hope to someday play musically! I appreciate your videos, so thank you so much!

Hello! I just watched your “Shoulder Rest and Chin Rest Help” video. I am a beginning violin student and I’m having a lot of trouble getting comfortable and finding the right shoulder rest. I saw you’ve had similar problems and was so happy when I found your “shoulder rest help” video. As I am now watching this “Violin lesson 1” video, I am a bit confused. I was wondering if you still use the bendable Bonmusica shoulder rest and if you don’t, why? Is the non-bendable Kun more comfortable? Which do you prefer and which would you recommend for someone that has been having a lot of problems trying to get it adjusted to their body and comfortable. Also, I realized that you held the violin in the first video more in line with your shoulder than you do now, as in it is more slanted now. You said in the “shoulder rest help” video that holding the violin more at a slant would pull the bow down and you would have to work against gravity to keep it up. Which way is the right way and why? Thanks so much. I realize these are a lot of questions, but your help would be very much appreciated from a struggling beginner violinist. 😊💗Bless you!
@ViolinAround
@ViolinAround 4 года назад
Hiya Ana, I have also had trouble finding a comfortable shoulder rest but I use a Bonmusica one now that I really like. They are really adjustable and even slightly hook around your shoulder to help stop the violin slipping down. You might like to try it :) Hope that helps a little
