Virgil is the man. Small correction to the video text: the track he's playing over is actually "Eleven Pt.2" from Ruination; similar idea but the main bass groove is noticeably different to "Eleven" from In This Life.

Neil wasn’t even remotely close to the level of the Virgil’s and the Colman’s and the Larnels and the Vinnies. He was a great rock drummer and that was the limits of his playing ability. He did not play anything else well but yes RIP to the rock legend Neil Peart.

He was playing in 11/8 . It’s easier to find a comfortable way of counting it, than 1234567891011. So if you count the first 8 as a typical 4/4 groove ie “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and “ each one of those counts equals an eighth note. Then add three more eighth note counts (in this case 123 is easy ) which equals 11. The whole counting phrase is 1and 2 and 3 and 4 and 123. Keep every count even. Once you get comfortable you could leave out the “and” count . Kind of how you were expressing it 1 2 3 4 123. Now as far as how he was playing the hi hat part that’s that’s a bit more involved.
