Join us as we board 220013 for the start of it's journey to Swansea on March 14th 2002. On arrival we're greeted by senior management from Virgin plus the city's Mayor. The local junior school entertain us with some Welsh singing before the Voyager is named "South Wales Voyager" The initial run from Cardiff to Swansea is covered in 39 minutes

Then these trains went down to be the most hated train in the rail industry. Not sure what they are thinking nowadays with running 4 car units from Penzance to Edinburgh

Great footage 😀👍🏽 That didn’t last long though with XC services to the North East and Scotland being cut back then dropped completely when XC was taken over in Nov 2007 ☹️

How often were the xc services from Cardiff?

@@s125ish BR ran 3 a day at one point in the 1980’s ... one was up the WCML via Birmingham and Preston to Glasgow/Edinburgh...In 1984 there was a 07:35 Cardiff to Glasgow and a 13:20 Glasgow-Swansea booked a class 50 locomotive between Birmingham and Swansea. By 1988 there was 2 the 07:05 Cardiff to Newcastle and a 12:06 Cardiff to York 🤔 For a period in the early 1990’s Inter-City XC ran a class 47 and MK2 coaches on a 07:40 Swansea-York and the return working was an 11:41 York-Swansea. It was later taken over by a XC HST. During privatisation, Virgin then ran 3 voyagers a day at one point...one went from Cardiff to Aberdeen 😯 Virgin cut the service back to 1 HST working between Swansea and Newcastle with a HST working the return Newcastle-Swansea. Arriva XC scrapped through workings from South Wales to the North East and Scotland completely. There is the hourly XC Turbostar service between Cardiff and Nottingham, but nothing further North than that 😟

0945 Cardiff to Edinburgh and 1306 Edinburgh to Cardiff services to start from December. Alliance Rail want to run 5 trains each way per day too

It’s disappointing that the Voyagers for Virgin Trains well now Avanti West Coast don’t operate in Swansea anymore as I think the west coast mainline should be running west into Pembroke Dock and into Mid Wales because the West Coast Mainline runs west of England when really it should run west of England and wales even if the Pendolinos don’t work as far as Swansea because the overhead lines

Lifting all the bridges to Swansea for catenary, was far too expensive. At least the GWR IEPs are battery too.
