Video provided to The Virginian-Pilot by David Scherrer shows his close encounter with a 10-foot great white shark while spearfishing about 20 miles off the North Carolina coast.
Fun fact sharks don't like it when you point anything at them. They're ambush predators the idea that you see them makes them uncomfortable. When you add f-off to the equation they always dip. That haven't been said I would be extremely concerned that he's just going down to shoot up at you after..... From below. I would so be GTFO.....
It's barely 3 feet long. 😂 *Edit* For those who misinterpret my statement, here are the rest of my replies: My point is that it is small and, contrary to popular opinion, great white sharks rarely attack humans. I'm not saying that I would not have been concerned. Only that I would have been far more concerned if it was larger, or was a bull or tiger shark because they attack humans much more often. Also, can't believe I forgot this because it is the most relevant part. Great white sharks, and most others, do not approach prey from a horizontal angle. They charge it from underneath. You're most likely not going to see the shark that attacks you, until you're already in its jaws. The only time they approach something that they intend to eat slowly and from a relatively parallel angle is if the thing they are going to bite is already dead, like a blue whale in the middle of an ocean. Again, in the moment it would be unnerving. But it really shouldn't bother an experienced diver to have an encounter like this. Looks good to people who never go in the ocean though. 😂 Have a great white day. 👍
typically, when do you not act like bait, foot or a scared or injured fish - the shark may just be curious. like all toddlers, the shark loves to use its teeth!
Fun (but useless) fact---- The name Bruce was chosen for that shark as a joke/tribute/whatever to the movie Jaws. The crew of Jaws started calling the mechanical shark in the movie Bruce, and the name stuck.
What about the chick who got attacked by a salt water croc and her bf was under suspicion of murder, until they found the camera that was dropped during the attack? Pretty sure she died.
And they can see the silhouette of a black wetsuit from farther than you can see them. In slack or calm water they might even be able to sense movement in their lateral line before they even see you. Not sure how sharks work but I enjoy fishing and almost pursued a career in fisheries biology and many freshwater fish have heightened senses. They can feel, see, hear like you wouldn’t imagine. It wouldn’t take much in that situation to trigger a chase. Surfacing would scare me more than being face to face because most fish feed up and attack prey from the bottom.
The whole surfacing was scary as well because I agree with the previous comment-- they are known to swim away and then come UP and attack. They don't want to be seen when they attack which is why facing them constantly is so important. That diver is a very fortunate soul indeed!
It's amazing how fast the shark sped up with just those few poweful thrusts of its tail! One minute it's swimming along slow and smooth and then it's got you!
that spear would like that would be like sticking a needle in your arm I've seen a smaller shark hit by a bang stick and attacked four of us and slashed three of us
As a powerful man once said: "Ah you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!"
For all you hunters, gun enthusiasts and spearfisherman that know little about how sharks actually function, sharks can't really tell you have a spear gun. The reason why it backed away wasn't the gun, it's the fact the person was aware of the shark's presence, was looking at it's approach and held out some sort of long implement in it's face. Sharks like the great white operate on the element of surprise and if they lose it they'll leave and find a better prey alternative. All of that is a deterrant to a continued attempt at an attack for the shark, but it by no means can recognize that the spear gun is an weapon that shoots a harpoon that could kill it. You'll see this in other videos where awareness and the same factors aren't enough to ward off the shark and the shark attempts the attack only to be shot.
Yes, at first he lied as if he was leaving, he walked away and suddenly turned into an attack position. It was scary. If the diver had not seen him, he would have attacked from below to his waist and legs.
What's amazing is that they can detect the dip and rise in your heart beat due to sensing bioelectrical signals. They essentially know where you are from a farther distance away. Which means you see them only if they let you see them.
Great white sharks rely on smell and eye sight. They have to be really close to use what you describe. Hammerheads can do it from further thanks to the hammerhead.
It seemed to me that he was trying to gain enough distance so that his natural camoflage would help but sharks don't realise humans have pretty good vision in broad daylight lol
"It's weird. Those long seals look so tasty but everytime I get close to one, they smell like they just shit themselves so bad that I lose my appetite."
@Schöner Albtraum many shark attacks are a hand bitten off, followed by a butt cheek. What they found was that divers were conditioning sharks to think that people will always give them fish, the sharks get excited and when there's no fish they try anyway, first the hand, then the rear, where a dive bag is kept.
Man it's freaky how good their coloration works in water like that. Nearly melts into the background multiple times, and as it swims off you can see how quickly jt starts to blend.
Would be a fucking genius hunting tactic for sharks , send the little runt to distract silly hooman then the fuckin megalladon comes outta nowhere and shit
I just want to say that the diver handled the situation perfectly. He stood his ground and didn't panic as the shark swam closer out of curiosity, so it realized that the diver wasn't prey and it swam off. In the end neither the shark or the diver was injured, well done.
@skinny pig No it didn't! Great whites don't attack divers very often unless they're mistaken for a seal or something. They mostly accidentally attack surfers. If you're ignorant enough to think a spear gun would kill the shark or that the shark somehow "knew" it was in danger then you know nothing about great whites. They are present every day on the California coast and they don't attack people unless they're mistaken for a seal.
@skinny pig no, it's just that we are like weird aliens to them so they get curious but once they see we aren't food, they often loose interest. Plus some species of sharks don't like the sound of bubbles.
@skinny pig plus sharks have all you can eat sea. . You think shark would eat fatty, small meat to bone ratio human? Or endless sealife humans sort after for decades. Sharks love seafood.
The shark most probably was just curious more about the gun than the actual diver since it probably just saw the diver as a normal regular big fish but the spear being a vibrant yellow color caught its attention
Definitely a great white. No other shark has a face like that. Also the caudal (tail) fin is nearly synmetrical (which puts it in the mackerel shark family). Its proportions are those of a white shark rather than a mako. Hard to tell its size from this video, but it seems on the smaller side... maybe a juvenile. Still big enough to be able to cause damage. The spear Fisherman handled the situation perfectly.
I actually have agreed & pressed "like " with some comments here with regard to the similar physical characteristics to a GW. However~ have never seen a White with such definitive & pronounced bi-coloured dorsal fin (*alikened to Oceanic Black Tip) which is SO obvious here. (Even juvenile whites will not have any black coloration).Notice also black colouration to the pectoral & caudal fins. Having looked further am now more convinced is Oceanic Black Tip. *pay careful attention to the differences between "Black Tip" (OCEANIC)" & "Black Tip" (REEF) sharks.
Seriously? The only thing anyone needs to look at is the fact that this shark is about 4 times bigger than the biggest Black Tip from ANYWHERE on the planet! I am perfectly willing to bet my LIFE on this NOT being a Blacktip shark!!!!! A little bit of color here and there is not enough to distinguish a species from any other. That kinda of thing happens ALL THE TIME IN EVERY SPECIES OF ALL LIFE ON EARTH!!!

If a shark thinks that you do not know it’s presence then it may attack. If it has no option for stealth they will often do what that shark did and swim directly towards whatever it is interested in, often just out of curiosity. Sometimes scarily it is because they’re hungry and they generally are looking for food, what you did by not flinching and standing your ground is exactly what probably saved you from getting a nip. You gave the shark the idea that you’re a predator and not prey. So well done I could have not done the same!
Definitely ! I would find it incredibly difficult to fight the urge to run , or swim away fast in this case ! Notice how even he high-tailed it outta there as soon as Mr. Shark turned and swam in the opposite direction .
@@jellylightningii5959 not really. The vast majority of shark attacks are cases of mistaken identity. No sharks seem to target humans as a food source and the ones that most often attack are either just very territorial or have terrible eyesight

Almost any animal doesn't know what to do if you stand your ground & make yourself look big. Getting into a fight where injury is possible is the last thing any wild animal wants, so if you look like you could fight back they think twice. Edit: of course there are exceptions, especially if the animal has babies.
@@flyingstonemon3564 Yeah, to my knowledge polar bears, crocodiles, & tigers are the only predators known to actively hunt humans & view us as normal prey.
@@dr.zoidberg8666yes except tigers dont like to attack from the front either, in a country where tiger attacks occured often they wear masks on the back of there heads that ressemble a face for that reason, polar bears and crocodiles dont give a fuck however. Polar bears dont see food often and will always hunt humans when they see them and crocodiles ambush from the water so they dont care about u facing the water either
1000% true people underestimate the knowledge, agility and power a great white has. Well the power is what people really only know a great white for. They're very smart hunters who adapt to different styles of hunting in different parts of the world. With all that being said I would freak the hell out if I was in that divers position. Lol
i was watching this on my comfy bed, thousands of miles away from their location, but when that shark turns around and starts swimming closer my heart starts beating as hard as a double pedal drum.
