Virginia Mayo did this rare TV interview with Joe Franklin, while starring in a local production of the musical "Good News". She discusses her early Broadway appearance in "Banjo Eyes" with Eddie Cantor and her long movie career, and also comments on how she and Judy Garland were the inspirations for the character of Neely in Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls". A later interview with Mayo from 1984 is posted at: • Virginia Mayo-- Rare 1...

Thank you for posting this. For a woman who was drop dead gorgeous and built like a goddess she is so refreshingly natural. Each time I watch The Best Years of Our Lives I enjoy her so much. She was sadly overlooked for an Oscar Nomination in this role as supporting actress.

Yes, she deseerved a nomination. Since her career was still so new, it's possible people thought she was really like that. In reality, she was a soft-spoken lovely lady. That "pzazz" she showed in her films was all acting.

Film buffs then really had to work at it. Collecting press clippings, scrapbooks and movie magazines was a labor of love, and Franklin was a super fan. It's great that his shows survive when so many didn't. In Detroit we had Bill Kennedy, who'd been an actor at Warner Bros. in the "other" High Sierra remake -- I Died a Thousand Times. You could become an expert by watching movies morning, noon and night on TV.

Thanks for the 1977 Virginia Mayo interview, a time when many of Hollywood's former stars were still around, even if they didn't get much attention except at fan shows. At least Turner Classic Movies started giving those stars' movies airtime starting in 1994, their old movies uncut and without commercials. By then, many of the Hollywood stars had passed on. But Joe Franklin got many of them on videotape before that happened and before WOR-TV went south.

I really enjoyed watching this one with Virginia Mayo. I think she "knocked it out of the park" with her appearance on what I think was the single greatest Hollywood film of all time, "The Best Years Of Our Lives," a part that she was truly fated to do. A final word on Virginia Mayo. She was better at playing those "gangster moll" and nasty sexy parts than anyone else of her time. In fact, I would have loved to have seen what she would have done with Lana Turner's part in "The Postman Always Rings Twice". I think Mayo would have been better. Mayo was also good in light musicals. Ironically enough, Bette Davis herself said that Virginia Mayo would have been much better in than she in the film "Beyond the Forest". Davis could play a bitch, of course, but she certainly didn't have the smouldering sex appeal that Mayo had. Interesting that in her private life, Virginia Mayo lived a very conventional and scandal-free life. She was a lovely lady who happened to be best when she played a character who was up to no good.

Despite the passage of time - over 35 years - the lovely Virginia Mayo has not lost any of her charm as depicted in this video upload. While in real life she was a happily married woman, to the rest of the world she was the gorgeous movie star, who was a top versatile actress of her time in the 40's, 50's and even part of the 60's, possessing a range in acting that was aptly utilized in dramas, swashbucklers, adventure, westerns and even horror flicks. She played with all the leading men of the 40's and 50's. Virginia possessed never-ending legs that were used to advantage in musicals like : She's working her way through college and Painting the clouds with sunshine. During this time, she was known as "the song and dance girl". When the old studio system existed, actors/stars were expected to display their versatility and put their acting chops to good use by playing varied roles in every genre in the book. Virginia was one of these players and put her multi-dimensional talent to excellent use. I last saw Virginia in "Castle of evil" that starred her with Scott Brady, David Brian and Lisa Gaye.

Virginia Mayo was great at playing sluts, gangster's molls, unfaithful wives, etc. She was "hot", and she played a lot of "cheap and sleazy broads" to perfection. If anyone wants to know what she was about, they should see her in White Heat" opposite James Cagney. She was beautiful but evil and poisonous. I loved her.

@Zva26
@Zva26 8 лет назад
+Alan Eichler - That's what I admire about her. For me, her best performances were in "White Heat" and in "Best Years of Our Lives". She was excellent at playing unsympathetic characters who were up to no good. Her musicals were fine, but she was a real actress, and I feel that many of her roles were not worthy of her. She was a pro through and through. Her comedy TV show, "It's a Great Life" was so opposite her personal life as a wife and mother. There were giants in those days, and she was one of them. I love her still.
@aeichler
@aeichler 8 лет назад

+Alan Eichler You're right! I'm wrong! Still love Virginia Mayo though. I watched my DVD of "White Heat" this morning. Boy, did she NAIL the role of Verna.
