thank you for recording this game 40 years ago, and posting it on RU-vid, even though the video quality is absolutely awful -- still fun to watch this old game

Rick Carlisle later played with Larry Bird and coached Dirk, what a forward combo that would be, and he played with big Ralph at Virginia, what a frontline the three would make.

Way to go Dan. Love the 'Season on the Brink' story about Indiana losing their first round 1986 tournament game to Cleveland State. Upon entering the locker room after the game only to encounter Dan Dakich, Knight reportedly said, "Great. I just got beat by Cleveland State, and the first person I have to look at is EFFING Dakich!"
@bradlewis6514
@bradlewis6514 3 года назад
I think because there's was a frosty relationship most of the time and despite the fact Dakich had graduated the year previous, Knight had a knack for sometimes not letting go if you weren't a constant on his good side (that was evidently rare indeed), but Knight did have a heartfelt side most either didn't know about because of the sideline Knight or weren't visual to it!

@@bradlewis6514 Also maybe because the game reminded him of the previous season when Dakich was a senior. FWIW Dakich was a graduate assistant coach in 1985-86 for IU.

I always loved Gary Bender doing college basketball. He didnt seem to last too long though in that capacity.

Bender, a fine play by play guy was with CBS a good while. He was the man on the mic when Staubach hit Pearson for the Hail Mary win against the Vikings in 1975. 7 years later during CBS first NCAA Tournament broadcast called the classic Georgetown vs North Carolina Final when Fred Brown threw the ball to James Worthy, after a kid named Michael Jordan hit the go-ahead and soon to be game winner for the Tar Heels. Don't you know the very next season, Bender and fellow ACCer Billy Packer rolled with the N.C. State Wolfpack through from the Sweet Sixteen to Lorenzo Charles dunk off the Derrick Whittenburg airball to win the Championship for the Wolfpack. Bender stopped calling the basketball after 1984 Final Four, his place secured as one of the top {underrated} broadcaster/play by play guys ever. I put Bender up there with guys like Don Criqui, Dick Stockton and Marv Albert. Guys that had No.1 potential, and served that post on a network at one time, but there was someone a little better either waiting in the wings, or they got bumped for. Criqui was no.2 at NBC during the Dick Enberg years and has a nice library of classic games he called for the Peacock. Stockton was No.1 play by play man for the NBA on CBS and as high as No.3 on the NFL side. Most of Stocktons classic calls were NBA games, like those classic Celtics vs Sixers, Lakers vs Celtics and Sixers NBA Finals. Albert was the only one who did not reach those heights in multiple sports. But Alberts time as No.1 on the NBA on NBC during the Jordan and the Bulls Championship years is arguably more iconic than any of the last 3 guys combined. Albert probably would've been more iconic had he not been fired by NBC because he did not finish the Jordan years, it was Bob Costas, NBC's No.1 guy at the time who replaced Enberg after NBC lost the AFC in 1997. Back to Bender. When Bender finished up his NCAA basketball duties, he was replaced by Brent Musberger, who hadn't called games since he was the No.1 guy on the NBA on CBS coverage from 1975 - 80 when he was replaced by guess who in 1981? Yep...Gary Bender. Bender was the No.1 guy for 1 year, then Dick Stockton took over in 1982 when Bender was assigned the No.1 guy teamed with Billy Packer on the NCAA basketball they just aquired. Musberger took over in 1985, just in time to call Villanova upset of Georgetown. Musberger had a great run until he was basically fired in 1990 at the Final Four. His last broadcast with the Eye on his blazer was UNLV's historic beatdown of Duke. That brought in the Jim Nantz era for CBS and Nantz is still the man there, but...He wants Tony Romo money, and we all know play by play guys, networks feel can be replaced...eventually, and most times the Network is right, but right because they usually have someone waiting in the wings as the heir apparent, but I don't think CBS has anyone on their roster right now that can do better than Jim Nantz. I hope he comes back, but if not, look for ABC (who just got the NFL back and may do baseball on the Network) to pounce and pounce hard and fast.

@@spryfolII Thanks for all that info. I remeber vividly Bender in college basketball when CBS got the rights to the tournament starting in 82. I am a big UNC fan so I was really into the 82 tournament and have watched the UNC vs Georgetown broadcast replay so many times over the years I practically have it memorized. I love all the old 70s announcers as well, Kurt Gowdy, Chris Shenkel, etc

@@richardbrown8702 honestly I didnt mispell it on purpose. I just loved all those classic guys I grew up with as a kid listening to on sports. Looking back I may have overrated them or their job quality but I remember them more fondly I guess because then live TV sports was more limited like once a week or so, it made the actual broadcasts more of an event. Now you can find an NBA game on every night seemingly. Never mind me, Im just missing the days of my youth and overly nostalgic I think 😕 🤔

Shows you how weird college hoops was 40 years ago - no shot clock, no 3 point shot, and regional finals played on the homecourt of teams actually playing in that game - Illinois @ UK. Wow.

Having to play Kentucky at Rupp Arena was the most unfair arrangement. And Illinois lost by just four. Kentucky got its comeuppance the next Saturday at Seattle in the game their fans wish had not happened.

Blab got the ball from Dakich. He then tossed to Robinson instead of Alford. It looks like Blab missed the chance to thro to Alford with enough time for a final shot. Why is Dakich made out to be the problem on that play?

@bradlewis6514
@bradlewis6514 4 года назад
I think alot of why Virginia won was because Indiana didn't have enough recovery time after being spent from the Carolina upset! The magnitude of the win never had adequate emotional decompress along with the fact that it was the later of the two East Sweet 16 games! Virginia could sit back while Carolina and Indiana physically wore each other down also! Then having to turn around and play not even two full days later! Now u have at least two full days in between first wkend and second wkend games time of day wise

The tournament didn't have it, some conferences did. It was like 17 feet in the ACC. But this appears to be the NBA 3 point line of the Atlanta Hawks arena.
