Rossini's Otello was first performed in Naples at the Teatro del Fondo on the 4th December 1816, ten months after "Il Barbiere di Siviglia".
The opera is seldom performed nowadays, partly due to the difficulty of finding three principal tenors with very high voices and coloratura techniques, and because it has been largely eclipsed by Verdi's 1871 masterpiece. it is nevertheless well worth hearing, being full of beautiful music. This exquisite Willow Song with its haunting melody and dramatic incident carries pre echoes of the Verdi "Salce" that was to come half a century later.

It was in this opera that Maria Malibran was said to have thought her father, singing Otello, was actually going to kill her on stage, so realistic was the drama.
This RAI [Italian Radio] performance dates from 1960. The singers are mostly those from the highly successful production staged by Rome Opera the same year. The striking sets are by the famous surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico.

Ho ascoltato tante cantanti in quest'aria, ma come Zeani, con quella voce morbida e fascinosa, NON C'E' NESSUNA! Grazie sempre per questi tesori.

It is so gratifying to think that the ancient tradition of this tragic Rossinian role was transmitted further from Pasta, Malibran and Viardot, and thanks to Lipkowska, continued its life in the legendary, ever sublime Zeani!

I am glad you are also enjoying the photos, For my first posting of this aria I had only one photo and used historic engravings of, Giuditta Pasta, Maria Malibran, Giulia Grisi and Pauline Viardot. Now I have this fine collection of new photos to share. The scenery for this visually striking production is by the famous surrealist artist Giorgio de Chirico. The vocal tradition also lives on here because Virginia Zeani was taught by Lydia Lipkowska who was a pupil of Pauline Viardot.

Immensely beautiful! I love the way the ornamentations are invested with meaning, and this must be the loveliest version ever of the final prayer.

Thank you so very much, dear Yvonne, for providing us with this rare operatic jewel, performed by ever sublime Virginia! And what a stunning set of photos, both of Virginia and her legendary predecessors in this role (Pasta, Malibran, etc.)!

Thank you for this! Zeani had real personality and emotion. Pauline Viardot would have approved .
