Virginia Zeani sings the title role in Maria di Rohan in Naples in 1962.
Synopsis The comte de Chalais, lover of Marie de Rohan, intercedes with the king, Louis XIII, to save the life of the duc de Chevreuse, condemned to death for having killed in a duel a nephew of Cardinal Richelieu. But Chalais discovers that Marie has secretly married the duke, when he takes part in a duel with Armand de Gondi. And Chevreuse, deciding to replace his benefactor in the duel, discovers that his friend has been the lover of his wife.

This performance remains unmatched. After so many years, it's still one of my favourite belcanto recordings. Great voice and style, impressive low register and very emotional. Diva Virginia Zeani!

Could you imagine how phenomenal the pairing of this great soprano with Shirley Verrett in Bel Canto masterpieces together such as Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, Norma, Siege of Corinth, and on and on! They have such a very similar timbre, they would have been remarkable!

Do I understand this aria correctly, then no wonder it’s all the guys shouting in the applause. She was my teacher for a few lessons, La Zeani and sings it better than any I’ve heard. Ms. Scotto was wonderful too. Oh my, what a haunting aria. 🎼🥂♥️

I heard this aria the first time through Mme. Zeani. What an introduction to yet another sample of Donizetti's genious by a fantastic artist ! Magnificent ! The brilliance in her voice captures my heart.

I have never heard before of this Donizetti's opera nor of this beautiful and moving aria, but Virginia is certainly DIVINE here as usual!

What an incredibly glamorous voice. I've never heard her Maria di Rohan, but I love her Traviata and her Aida. This just blew me away. Brava, La Zeani!
