XferMe Anything monitor netter than 1080p these days are ridiculously overpriced anyways. If this technology becomes mainstream it can create competition which will benefit us consumers.
+lvlaple4Ever I realized this a while ago, if the resolution of the VR headset is good enough then you can use Headless ghost to help virtualize your monitors. This is the main reason I bought the Oculus Rift, not for games but for virtually unlimited screen space. As a programmer, I'm pretty excited about having 6+ documents open and just having them all displayed at the same time.
+LEMMiNO I always thought that this will happen at some point. I didn't expect it to be so early though, we're gonna end up like those people in Wall-E
+BuckstarrZ thats what they said when the wright brothers managed to fly , or the tetris handheld was released and thats when they will say when everyone is flying his own little self-flying capsule
+CPUzer0 Well, he has to afford the VR Headset, but actually Virtual Desktop system requirements doesn't even get close to what the VR HMD makers consider to be the minimum for VR. The Steam Store page lists a GTX 640 as the minimum and I reckon as long as the user doesn't do anything on the system that really taxes the GPU the 640 will probably be perfectly fine for everything. (And a 640 isn't even a gaming card from nvidia. We're talking about a very old "office system level"-GPU.)
+michael williams well i think they will a virtual real estate and start selling virtual apartments or mansions in different prices ;) gd luck with that :D
One feature this should have. Add an options to display a virtual keyboard in the environment which mirrors the keys being pressed on your actual keyboard. This would greatly help with keeping yourself orientated with the keys when you can't see the thing.
+Christopher Jones Don't laugh. Porn brought VHS into the mainstream, they brought DVDs, streaming and so on. They're already producing VR porn to have it ready. Those POV videos? Yup.
im not laughing.. Im being serious. I seriously want to be stock in porn and everthing related to the VR because its going to get crazy. Ive been waiting 20 years for this day to come.. VR.. not VR with porn because the applications for it is endless.. it actually makes me sick to my stomach thinking of all the ideas and knowing someone else will beat me to it. VR porn is just the tip of the iceberg.
+James Jukich nah, that we're replacing reality with "virtuality", which makes one start asking questions about the nature of life and the meaning of it. I'm a huge fan of tech innovations and I think VR is awesome, but I also feel that it'll force us to question the fundamentals of living, as we'll ultimately be wired with our neural systems to a 1:1 (or even improved) virtual reality.
+Will Mazeo "The automobile is going to ruin society" "The Radio is going to ruin society" "TV is going to ruin society" "The internet is going to ruin society" See the trend?
I know right? It's so stupid that they haven't done multiple VR Screens using their own implementation of Virtual Desktops. There is absolutely NO reason at a software or hardware lever OR performance issues that they haven't done this. Making VD's is apparently easy for people that know how to program that way. There have been 3rd party programs for both Mac and Windows for decades that do it, even before either had them.
This is... what I've been searching for all my life, I would love to feel like I'm sitting in a skyscraper watching RU-vid as an airplane flies by. and the possibilities are literally endless
+WorldWideWebb Watching 2D movies won't be that interesting I think, especially if you already have a decently big TV. The detail level will be less than what you would get staring at your actual tv. Maybe i'm wrong and at least the "theater" vr room will make movies as awesome as being in an actual theater with good quality audio surround effects.
+Thomas Mairey I agree, but thinking back to the days where I didn't own a TV period, this would've blown my mind. All any average person needs is decent headphones and to curve the display in the VR. In regards to the working spaces, I think that'll be a huge market. You could sit on your back porch with a laptop and listen to ambient city sounds of Paris while viewing a VR scene of a Parisian patio. I'm just in awe of the possibilities.
i think my favorite thing about this is the movie/netflix watching capability. it provides an ideal environment for watching that kind of content where it's dark and there aren't any distractions around the monitor, plus no glare from the sun or from lights!
I literally dreamed of this a decade back, the idea that monitors became "obsolete". Fantastic work, simple idea with an execution that looks really interesting and stunning.
Before I buy it I need to know if it can do sbs/ou full 180 front/dish 180 with proper scale you probably know why. ps will be an instant buy for me if you do support this.
+PlngPong it has a video player than can do 180 and 360 viewing buut not every video supported for vr is configured the same and the video player cannot be adjusted to fit. Unless it's been updated, otherwise I've found maxvr to be the best video player currently. For pron of course.
+Shrek FourTwenny Even if you can touch type it could become difficult when you need/want to switch input devices. Because after typing something you need to find your mouse or controller again.
Shrek FourTwenny I think most people doing actual work on a PC can type blind, but i.e. the problem I have is the keyboard position after taking hands off, and it's worse with the mouse (or a coffe cup ;) ). I personally don't see much practical use of VR as monitor replacement for everyday work (yet).
Radonatos Would be great to see cameras pop up on more VR headsets that would help you either just see the room or even map the position of input devices into the VR environment. That would be possible if you designed a mouse and keyboard with the VR "beacons" built-in, and I'm sure that doing the same to a coffee cup would not be that difficult. :)
+Benedict T. funnily enough one of the reasons I stick with a mac (laptop) is the desktop system is nice already, the swipe gestures etc give you an extra dimension: it's like a ZUI. Haven't seen anything quite as refined on linux though similar things are available. I would like something like this eventually but VR probably needs to get to 4K per eye to be useful/comfortable for work
+ATW Tech Apple don't make "great" computers. Well, macbooks are totally fine, since laptops of similar quality and specs cost pretty much the same. A $4K mac pro loses to a $2000 PC by a large margin in terms of processing power, which is very necessary in tasks like video editing and 3D modeling. iMacs are just IPS monitors with laptop hardware strapped to them. Which is not bad for home use if they weren't so overpriced. As workstations they are just bad.
Look at all the insecure losers liking your comment. Modern Macs are more than able to handle this, maybe gaming might suffer but otherwise it would work fine.
+Kouki_Monster no need for a line anyways if you purchase your tickets online like i do lol. But i know. Just sayin it doesn't have all the perks of an imax.
Seraph Sirius True , I have been keeping an eye on VR , albeit with scepticism. But if this virtual desktop app is a success , the VR headset might become as commonly used as my headphones. Which is a big deal.
+ProtoMario This is exactly why I bought the Oculus Rift, that plus the fact that with some cheap hardware additions you can virtualize monitors that you don't actually have. Buying the Rift essentially enabled me to have 3+ monitors in VR space which realistically is cheaper in the long run.
Bubble Buddy I completely agree man. I'm only 14 now, I'm worried about what will come. I also somewhat fear for my children's lives. Like dang, how's it gonna be for them?
can you add extra monitors virtually? I've been considering doing this since oculus Dk1. Instead of getting more than 2 screens IRL just get a VR headset and add 5. Would be amazing for workflows and gaming while watching stuff, and being able to adjust screen size/distance. Also, kinda relevant but would it be possible to have a "cinema" with a monitor on your left or right to check things, or have the monitor just below the cinema screen so you could work and look over to watch.
Imagine mapping multiple desktops into the space, and being able to rotate them etc, like virtual physical monitors, but they also map to desktops on a traditional screen when you take the headset off.
no, vive has same resolution as cv1. so dont expect it to be much better. see vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/ one 4k screen in a HMD would be enough. still not too much for most gaming pc's but also not too bad for VR.
I'm so glad you're going to profit from Virtual Desktop. I've been using the free one for awhile now, it's an amazing tool and if I had a problem, the fix was just around the corner. Also, those 3D environments are amazing. I hope I can make some 3D environments for Virtual Desktop in the future as I'm an environment artist. Good luck on future endeavors!
Yo dawg, we heard you like screens, so we made a screen that makes it look like you're looking into a bigger screen. Normally have 3 screens? No problem, we can put those 3 screens inside one screen to make it look like you got 3 bigass seamless screens INSIDE ONE SCREEN. Like theater screens? No problem. We can make it look like you got a theater screen in our screen. The question is...can we launch the application twice and have a screen (the VR headset) look into a virtual screen (virtual desktop) looking into ANOTHER virtual screen? That's a lot of screen, dawg.
For those who are uncertain, I had the chance to try this software when I had the DK2 for a few weeks and let me say that watching a movie in a virtual theater is a treat, I thought it was a bit pointless at first but it's a great way to get the "theater experience" at home especially for those who have small rooms or don't like to sit 2 feet from your monitor for 90+ minutes. Additionally the virtual desktop experience was fun, nothing I can see myself using for an extended period of time but it was a blast and I can absolutely see the merit in using it to sit back and play a casual game in a "theater"
0:51 If you have a multiscreen set up, you can get multi windows in the virtual desktop? Why you need multi monitors to get virtual desktop to give you multie windows?? Thats kind off stupid and odd.
+David Forslund I know, but it's still strange. I mean it's virtual so you sould be able to create you're own interface without the number of moniters that are conneceted to your computer. But yeah that would be a solution.
This is software that runs on your PC, and Windows have OS-level functionality for splitting up into several monitors. But standard Windows desktop is one screen, one monitor. Maybe there isn't another way? I don't know actually.
@@Relph1984 I agree that it needs this ability. It's not an issule of "multiple monitors" at a hardware level. It's just a software thing. Something that could probably be done with the VR desktop program. Basically, they need something akin to virtual desktops where each one can be given it's own screen in the VR room. Windows 10 has virtual desktops. They might be able to use that ability within VR Desktop. If not, they can make their own VD implementation . It's not hard, there have been 3rd party VD's for years; ones that are typically better then both the Windows OR Mac version. It's honestly really stupid that the company hasn't already done this. To me it is the ONLY reason to ever have a VR desktop. Otherwise it is just staring at a screen in a virtual room..... and really just a toy, not a tool. Seriously, it's stupid not doing it. You can friggen build multiple screens that can browse the internet and watch movies in MINECRAFT !!!!!!! (Well, you apparently could in earlier versions of MC, there were several different mods but, they haven't been maintained)
Are there any gotachas to be aware of? I'm a software developer traveling and thinking of getting this (much easier than carrying around a monitor), but I'm scared to make the leap, invest a lot into it without trying it.
@@vonwao It's been many years since I started using it, but to this day, it's still one of the de facto tools for being in VR. SteamVR itself now has a really great desktop viewing experience built in, but for a variety of reasons, this is a great backup plan. The one big thing to keep in mind is resolution. Back then, you'd have to project a monitor the size of a wall to even be able to read it because the headset resolutions were so low, but these days, I'd bet you'd have a much much better reading experience. (I still daily drive a Vive v1, so I can't say for sure on the matter.) Also, this may or may not be a problem, but if you have zero monitors plugged in (I'm making an assumption based on your comment), I'm not sure if it would work properly, buuuut in that case, you can always get a couple dollar hdmi port stub that pretends to be a monitor for like 5 bucks.
+Guy Godin What about Nvidia 3D Vision? Afaik this also has a wide support for 3D ouput, can this be used instead of other third party software like TriDef?
This is scary technology. I would live in my tiny apartment, but put on my Rift everyday as I walk in the door and melt away into the comforts of my virtual mansion ... within a few months I'd be like those junkies in Inception. I'd just SketchUP my clean apartment over my VR apartment. But honestly, with the ability to virtualize 6-9 screens ... I could see this boosting productivity in the office as well. I use 3x screens at work now, and if I had 3 more I would be more productive for sure.
Why would you still need a display if you are using VR ?Please explain Could you not use ...let's say 6 displays config with VR even if you have just one or none ?
+Corporate Warrior Because effective resolution of screen that seats 1 meter in front of you is below 480p. Come back in 5 years where 8k displays will be available
2 years later.... were at 1,280 by 1,440 (per eye) for just £200. I'm waiting for direct retinal projection. :-D www.theverge.com/2018/2/5/16966530/intel-vaunt-smart-glasses-announced-ar-video
This is brilliant. Media content is not something we view, it's something we are inside! I predict an increase in the amount of movies I watch and games I play with this. Seeing all your existing library of games in a completely new way, a big new way :D
This is some next gen stuff fellas.. I'm not an easy-to-impress with technology person, mainly because I always think of what parameters and programs are running in the background to give you an illustration, but sometimes it hits me and this video is one of those times.. I know the technology behind the goggles, I know how they let you view the surroundings in 360, but still I have a flashback of me using the PC in maybe 2004 and thinking "If I could play Vice City in my bed or elsewhere, it would be the coolest thing ever" and 10 years later they release it for the Android devices.. Oculus and the rest of VR give me the same kind of chills, I can imagine the feeling that a person gets once he sees himself surrounded by a virtual environment, and I hope I get the chance to experience it... I'd like to see Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike 1.6, GTA:SA, Deus Ex and many others including Morrowind and even strategy like Age of Mythology and Heroes of might and magic and many more, in this "3D" projection.. I know half of these haven't been ported yet, but nevertheless the ones I mentioned and a couple of others would amaze me the most if I saw them "surrounding" me.. :)
+Felipe Moreno 3D interfaces are not efficient, since it implies having stuff obstructing other stuff. Beside, manipulating a 3D interface would require an additional degree of movement, something that most common controllers like game controllers or a mouse can't do.
Only if you explicitly add depth to it. My point is, having a 2D plane to set your interface on is the most efficient way to avoid obstruction, which is why it is that way, combined with the requirement for an additional degree of movement as I mentioned earlier. Beside, the current interface is simply a display of the current monitor display generated by your computer, so you can easily access any function your OS interfaces to you.
Is there a way to curve the screen vertically as well as horizontally? I would like to a create an IMAX Omnimax (270-degree image) type display -- or close approximation.
