A few other considerations that did not make it into this video are...
1) Look for a true Williams style plunger assembly
2) Look for a high quality plunger potentiometer to allow for skill shots
3) Look for glass protection over the main playfield and backglass monitors
4) Consider Delivery Time Frames (how fast can you get a unit) - stay away from anybody who cannot deliver within 60 days

Those entry level units do not reproduce the same touch and feel of a mechanical pinball machine but they are a good starting point to better understand what Virtual Pinball is. They are definitely not recommended if you want the full experience.

@@RecRoomWorld What is the very best virtual pinball machine out there? I watched a video for extremegamingcabinets and their pinball looks amazing, but I am in the US and they are in Australia so I have not asked them for a shipping quote yet but I bet it's going to cost so much to ship to the US that it may just not ne worth it, I don't know, I am looking to see if there's anyone in the US that is as good or better as them.
@RecRoomWorld
@RecRoomWorld Месяц назад
You found it! There are numerous reasons not to purchase the unit you are referring to from Australia. If you want to know why feel free to give me a call at 614-603-3343. The most blatant reasons starts with the fact that they do not have the ability to ship within 30 days, they have a very long waiting period for a VPin since they operate out of a small workshop in Australia. And do you really want to purchase a product from someone who has negative reviews on Trustpilot and is on the opposite side of the world in a time zone that is not conducive to properly support US-based customers? Like I mentioned, give me a call at 614-603-3343 and I will give you all the reasons in detail... Aone thing I can say is that their implementation does not reproduce the same realistic haptic feedback sensation of a mechanical pinball machine like our Ultra VP.
@BrettEcuyer

@@RecRoomWorld I wonder who put those negative reviews there ? Yours and theirs are probably the two best machines on the market. Is one better ? Probably not. They'd argue that theirs is the superior machine.....and so would you.

@RecRoomWorld Месяц назад
@@BrettEcuyer If you are insinuating that we posted the negative review about them you couldn't be more wrong, in fact that would be insulting. We would never stoop that low and post anything of that nature about a competitor. They do make a nice looking machine but not a great feeling machine. If you want the closest touch and feel experience to a mechanical unit you are better off buying an Ultra VP from us. There are quite a few technical reasons for that; if it interests you please give us a call and ask for Roland to delve into those details.

This is an excellent, comprehensive video. Anyone in the market for a vpin should definitely heed your advice. Since you really seem to know your stuff, I'm curious what your assessment is on where actual emulation is headed. Is it at a dead end? Will we ever see tables from the mid 2010s onward be emulated or will they all have to be painstakingly coded manually (e.g. Legacy of the Beast, Deadpool, etc.).
@RecRoomWorld
@RecRoomWorld 4 месяца назад
Visual Pinball Emulator is not a dead end at all. If you look at the latest 10.8 release it's adding new features including depth functionality that wasn't there before making the tables look better and better. Also don't forget that a lot of people are now playing Visual Pinball with VR headsets, which enhances the 3D experience tremendously, while still using the physical cabinet to experience force feedback and to nudge the ball. Future versions of Visual Pinball will be programmed in either Unreal Engine 5 (and/or Unity) and will include support for ray tracing. And yes, we are hopeful that somebody will come around who will be able to utilize the Linux based firmware (Spike 2 ROMs and similar) used on newer machines you mentioned. It is already happening in the multi-cade world with Teknoparrot games enabling light gun enthusiasts to play the latest Linux based light gun arcade games such as Tomb Raider at home (still on Dave and Buster's floor).

Love this comprehensive video. Great job. I cannot afford the Cadillac of vpin. But, this advice is golden. Reason: to keep a perspective on quality, pricing, service, and what you get for a price. With less options there SHOULD be a lower price. Thankfully your advice paid off for me. I found a small custom made one. The owner was honest and open about the build. And I researched enough to know what was a rip off or not. I undersrand my tiny machine isn't number one or the best. But it's the best it can be for the price. Slowly, I can add more features. This video is an incredible breakdown of what the best can be....wow! For now I have a Volkswagen Rabbit. But it's a good Volkswagen for the "correct* price.

Not likely to happen since the Visual Pinball Emulator runs unlicensed tables. Those tables are made by a hobbyist community of freelancers from all over the world who do not take the time to license the tables they make, hence it is not suited to show off in public. You may see the lower end VPins at Expos from companies like AtGames or Arcade 1Up who license a few tables but not the premier VPin manufacturers.

Constraints in space, budgets, access to vendors or parts if you are building your own or even buying one apply to every scenario. I think the slanting of the monitor is a bad decision long term as graphics cards with ray tracing are going to be able to be much more consistent with the proper shadowing and lighting effects available as table devs start using the capabilities in Unity and Unreal Engine. Using a slant actually creates larger and larger off angle viewing angles which will create slight colour distortion, contrast issues and dimmer images the higher up the playfield. In trying to mimic how a table lies in a cabinet, you are actually hurting the axis angle with a monitor. All modern lcds are always much more accurate the closer you are to a perfect axis angle to the screen (Oled is better but still can have small issues). Again as more modern ray tracing gpus come into use the graphics will be much better at providing that 3d effect than physically angling the monitor.
@RecRoomWorld
@RecRoomWorld 4 месяца назад
Thank you for your comment... we appreciate all participation but in this case you are incorrect. In fact, laying a monitor flat actually makes the viewing angle worse since you are not standing right above the monitor but rather in front of the machine where an angled monitor actually helps. Modern display monitors have much improved viewing angles (most only start degrading at about 70 degrees if you research it on Google). In other words, the distortion you are referring to is a non issue on a slightly angled VPin playfield monitor (usually only about 7 to 10 percent angle). Furthermore, ray-tracing will not affect this in any way, it will only improve the real-time lighting effects rendered by the graphics card and improve the visual quality of tables. What we are referring to in this video is more of an esthetic choice to mimic the way a mechanical playfield is positioned.

@RecRoomWorld
@RecRoomWorld 6 дней назад
The bottom line is that you should be aware that virtual pinball machines come in many flavors, build qualities, price points, and features that may not be installed in the most optimal locations inside the cabinetry to faithfully reproduce the touch and feel of a mechanical pinball machine. You truly get what you pay for, and whether or not you purchase the recommended Ultra VP is entirely up to you. Our recommendation is to test units in person and discover the truth. I'm sure that for 9.000 dollars. You get as close as you can get to a real pinball machine experience. The only downside for me is. I imagine that the entire reason why somebody plays virtual pinball. Is because he does not have the money to buy a real pinball machine. And for 9.000 euro's. You do actually have a brand new pinball machine. And you can get a real pinball machine for a lot less second hand. I do actually own a real pinball machine Cyclone. A old game. It is not as cool as a Medieval madness. but it's a real machine and it cost 2.200. And yes. It is real and old and it might break down bla bla bla. but fixing it and all that kind of stuff. is still never going to set you back 9.000 dollars. In the end you pay a fortune to get as close as you can get to the real thing. Just difficult for me to understand why you would then pay 9.000 for getting close to the real thing. When in fact you can actually buy the real thing for that money. And yes you have multiple tables and I understand the advantages and all of that. But that is why I also play both Visual pinball on my computer. And the real thing. And perhaps this is a stupid reason to buy a real pinball machine instead of a virtual one. But for me when I have friends over. And they see a real pinball. One that is crappy and just ost 2200. They go holy fuck it's a real pinball machine. When I would pay 9.000 dollars for a virtual one. They would go like. Wow that is a pretty oversized computer you have just to play pinball video games. That being said. This is my opinion. This is not me recommending you what you should do. This is a good video. It gives good and solid advice. if you are in the market to buy a virtual pinball.

Thanks for your comments... You are forgetting the main reason people purchase a Virtual Pinball Machine with mechanical pinball realism. The #1 Reason is you get to play the entire pinball history on a single unit, so no game boredom! The #2 reason, as you tried to dismiss, is that you will avoid the mechanical pinball maintenance headaches associated with "real pinball machines". Very few people know how to repair pinball machines and it is becoming a real headache to find local shops who can assist at a reasonable price. Beyond those two main reasons, you are comparing apples to oranges in your arguments. For $9,000 you get a BRAND NEW high-end Virtual Pinball Machine, not a used unit like Cyclone (which btw averages on Pinside for over $3,000 since 2022, not $2,200). If you want to make proper comparisons you need to account for the fact that new high end mechanical pinball units cost between 11,000 and 15,000 dollars. In other words please compare NEW with NEW. Virtual Pinball is not here to replace owning a few mechanical units, in fact you can learn which tables you love playing on a Virtual Pinball Machine before you invest in the mechanical equivalent. They truly compliment each other and you should own both!

@@RecRoomWorld Oh i fully understand why people purchase a virtual pinball machine. And if you have the money. There is a lot of advantages that a virtual pinball have compared to a normal pinball machine. Because in all honesty I don't have 9.000 dollars even to buy a car let alone a virtual pinball machine. I also imagine that if you are able to purchase a virtual pinball machine. For that price. Then you probably earn enough money to buy both a virtual pinball and a real pinball. And then you get the best of both worlds.

Nothing wrong with mechanical units, in fact we own some ourselves. Keep in mind that mechanical pinball only gives you one game at a time and mechanical issues associated with it down the road. Virtual Pinball is not meant to replace mechanical units. Both worlds are complimenting each other, and not mutually exclusive. If you want to be able to play the ENTIRE history of pinball on a single unit then a high-end VPin that is well built with mechanical realism (not easy to find) is definitely the way to go since nobody has enough room and patience to maintain every pinball machine ever made. VPins are also a great to learn game rules of units you do not own (in preparation for competitions for instance). A top of the line VPin can be found at www.VirtualPinball.com

Please don't use plywood for your cab, use actual solid wood, plywood doesn't give you that real cabinet sound and feel. I know its a cost cutting measure, but if you're spending thousands on your cab, insist on solid wood builds.
@RecRoomWorld
@RecRoomWorld 2 месяца назад
Before you comment please educate yourself and know the facts. We also own over 10 mechanical units and ALL mechanical pinball machines are built out of plywood. Here is the result of a Google search on the subject: "Pinball machines are made of a variety of materials, including plywood, metal, and chrome. The playfield, cabinet, and wiring boards are made from inexpensive, sturdy plywood. The metal parts, like screws and springs, are made from common materials like aluminum and stainless steel. Commercial pinball machines use a specially sourced plywood that is not available from big box stores, and is generally very hard and heavy." What you don't want to use is sound absorbing MDF, that was the point being made in this video. Plywood and/or solid wood will provide proper reverberation you don't get with MDF.
