Virtual tour in ancient Athens (5th century BC) - 3D reconstruction

3D reconstruction of Classical Athens in the late 5th century BC. The city is presented the way it would look in the years before the defeat in the Peloponnesian War (404 BC).
The city of Athens was completely destroyed by the Persian army in the years 480-479 BC. In the years that followed, the Athenians managed to rebuild their city and by the middle of the 5th century BC, the statesman and general Pericles ordered an extensive construction programme that made Athens the centre of classical Greece. It was the time when the great temples on the Acropolis hill were built (Parthenon, Erechtheion) and many buildings of public administration for the Athenian Democracy.
The video presents almost all of the important monuments, spaces and areas within the city. The 3d reconstructions were made after the most recently published international research and a great effort was made to be as accurate as possible. Of course simplifications and artistic license are present in order to technically manage a big project as this one.

This makes me emotional every time I watch it. What an amazing culture. Return the Parthenon’s Marbles to Athens! I am profoundly grateful to your massive amount of creativity and technological expertise to produce such an important piece of education, history and inspiration. Truly worthy of your ancestors! They are all of Europe's ancestors. " "Europe" is a Greek word.
@rogeriocarvalho229
@rogeriocarvalho229 Год назад
@@poppycalliope6793 “They (the Greeks) are among our cultural ancestors, and our view of them is intimately connected with our view of ourselves. That has always been the particular point of studying their world. It is not just a matter, as it may be in studying other societies, of our getting to know about human diversity, other social or cultural achievements, or, again, what has been spoiled or set aside by the history of European domination. To learn those things is itself an important aid to self-understanding, but to learn about the Greeks is more immediately part of self-understanding. It will continue to be so even though the modern world stretches round the earth and draws into itself other traditions as well. Those other traditions will give it new and different configurations, but they will not cancel the fact that the Greek past is specially the past of modernity. The process by which modernity takes in other traditions will not undo the fact that the modern world was a European creation presided over by the Greek past.”- Bernard Williams, British philosopher, in “Shame and Necessity”.

They have similar ones of ancient Egyptian cities in Assassins creed Origins . The Parthenon was constructed to celebrate the Greek victory over the Persians in the 5th century BC. Athena was chosen as the city's protector after she grew an olive tree which sustained the city by producing olives instead of choosing Poseidon as the city's protector who struck his spear in to a rock and caused water to well up. There is apparently a salt spring inside the Parthenon compound

@bigtex.1453
@bigtex.1453 Год назад
On the morning of January 7, 2021, in the United States of America, in the mountains of Western Maryland, I placed a poster of the Parthenon and the surrounding city, photographed in golden dawn light, a modern photo with some of the repair scaffolding still visible, in my front yard as a reminder of how fragile democracy is...It was done symbolically in the wake of the attack on the capitol building in Washington, DC, on January 6th. An infamous moment in American history. The achievements of Athens in the mid-fifth century BC are often derided today for excluding women, slaves, and "outsiders"...from the political process, which is true, but out of context to the times, as is usually the case today. The Athenian democracy was imperfect yet was for its historical setting and all its limitations something never to be forgotten, and especially remembered today when democracy is everywhere under attack. For a moving work upon these themes, I recommend "Democracy: Ancient & Modern" by the renowned scholar of the ancient world, M.I. Finley. And a great rejoinder to the American fixation with the Roman "republic": Mike Duncan's "The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic." Submitted by gracchibros.wordpress.com

I have no sacred place but this city as it was comes very close... it’s art and insights into ourselves.

Incredible in the way it brings this highpoint of civilization to life. I was struck by the large number of temples and sanctuaries scattered through the city, more than we are usually aware of, the Erechtheion, the Parthenon, Athena Nike. Many more than I knew about. I hope that I can visit Athens some day. Thanks for this video.

That was excellent and above it conveys a real sense, sometime lost of just how damn small Athens was even in the third century BC at the height of it's power and prestige. It even brought back my smattering of classical Greek
