Born and raised in Athens, when young the school bus would pass through a ring road that gave you direct view of the Acropolis hill. We liked it but, as you do, took the view for granted and got on with our lives. When 18 I visited the actual hill for the first time in my life. Yes I know right? Well, what I didn’t know was that just the scale of things (when passing through the Propylaia to get to the Parthenon) would make my jaw drop. Lesson of that day: never underestimate the beauty of things you would, otherwise, take for granted in your everyday life. I was blessed to have been born as a native to this city and I didn’t even know it.

You might be interested in the Discovery Tour mode of this game: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uh4Iy-p943M.html No combat, no story, no quests, just the entire game world to explore with short narrated tours covering landmarks, history and daily life. It's also available in video form, which is perhaps more suitable for the classroom: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y8rcx4yuqOQ.html The previous game, set in Ancient Egypt, also has this mode (even as a standalone game). It's absolutely delightful. It not only touches on historical aspects, but also mentions where real-life and game differ.

Unfortunately the ancient history taught in schools is utter horseshit. Its political history, not actual history. Its laughable that they teach that Rome and Greece are the foundations of European civilisation, when in fact the greeks and romans just inherited slavic cultures. Greeks only been in "Greece" since 800BC. Serbia, the Serbian language and culture is where all the answers lie.

@@borisfrlic Huh? That's a joke right? Or some alternate history by u? Slavs did not exist in ancient times the only arrived in Europe in Mediaval times around 5th century and later on 9th century they adopted Roman Catholicism and Byzantium Orthodoxy from Greeks. This is history, what you say about Romans and Greeks inherited slavic cultures they did not even exist at the time and when they did it was the other way around. Read real history.

I feel like there's two sides to the AC series. 1 side is a dev team that is clearly passionate about history and recreating it in video game form. The other is a publisher who wants to push out yearly releases and monetise them as much as possible. I remember thinking it was ridiculous when I first read they were gonna make it annual back in 09. "How can you make such a detailed open world game in a year? AC isn't CoD." But they found a way by making the games as cookie cutter and formulaic as possible. Makes me wonder what would happen if Ubi just let the devs put out a high quality AC a couple times a generation, instead of forcing the annual schedule. Still though, as repetitive as these games can get I'll buy one every few years when one piques my interest and it's always a solid 6-7/10 experience. I really don't get the hate these games get, they're mediocre, but the use of historical settings makes them a little more interesting than other annual releases. As much controversy as the microtransactions caused in the recent games, they're really a minor issue at best.

This is amazing! You seriously have no idea how much I nerded out through this. I was able go go to Greece on a study abroad this summer and I definitely was geeking out and comparing things in my head. I didn’t see Delphi or any part of Crete, but we spent most of our time on Lesbos (with a quick mainland tour, where we did get to see the Acropolis). Things definitely were shifted around (the petrified forest is waaaaay further west and not as far north in real life), but overall it was faithful enough to even this little island. Unfortunately the main city, Mytilene, has drastically changed since then, so there weren’t really many ways to compare the area. Thermopylae is another area that is sized down significantly in the game, and there’s no massive water along the area, but it might be that geographical shifts over a couple thousand years caused the waters to recede, as it did in maaaany places in the region. Despite that, I still could imagine myself standing in the game when I stood there. I kept nerding out to the other students comparing things that I recognized from the game, and I’m soooo glad to see someone go in depth like this!
@javkiller

You've just created what's essentially the wet dream of any obsessive nerd, and I love you for it. On the subject, though, I'd be incredibly curious as to how the experience of "being there before" would change if you had played the game in VR. I've realised my own recollection of playing VR games as opposed to traditional ones is closer to having been to the place rather than playing it. It must be insane to turn that into a tour or a real life map guide.

AC Odyssey has done a brilliant job with ancient greece , including how it presents ancient personalities such as Sokrates and Perikles. However , the surroundings are indeed totally off , Delphi being the most obvious since it ruins the atmosphere , which in reality is breathtaking. The fact ancient greeks decided to set the oracle there was not by accident. Having visited all those sites , i totally recommened visiting Delphi for its amazing energy ( you have to go there to understand it ) and the Chariot racer statue. The second best imo is the tomb of Philip in Vergina , because it never got vandalised and you can see literally everything our ancestors placed inside. Makes you wonder how many more stories and wonderful sites lie hidden beneath the soil , maybe 1 day !

I've clocked 138 hours in this game, and I just finished the main story. I'm *almost* done completing every little objective in the whole map, and I've walked most of it. At one point I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I felt I needed to do in the game and quit. Eventually I came back to it because I felt bad for giving up and my completionist side yelled inside me to finish it. And so I took Kassandra in and adventure again. And what helped me this time was to take my time and enjoy the view, and damn if the view wasn't amazing! Everywhere you look the game feels alive, from the cities crowded with people that mind their own business (the kids playing on one side, the group of people discussing between them, someone painting, another one working with stone, etc) to the fields brimming with flora and fauna, travelers who stop to mourn their friend, who was just killed by a bear... Breathtaking. Even with the obvious differences compared to the real thing, the astounding work these people put in the game shows everywhere. Thanks for doing this video, helped my wife and me to appreciate more such labor. Kudos to you.

First, you have to pay out of pocket to travel there. Then find the places on interest. Then you have to set up the cam in the right location. At the exact correct angle. At the exact right height. Constantly going back and forth between the game and real location till you get the shot just right. Then after all that and more you have to come back home and line up the pans and edit it seamlessly. Incredible work Super (and crew most likely). Great stuff. Thanks so much for doing and sharing it.

I loved this video, thanks so much for putting it together - I can imagine it was a lot of work. Ive only started playing the AC series and am only up to number 3 now, but this really has me looking forward to Odyssey (and remembering back to my classical studies school trip!)

There's a really nice podcast run by an University history PhD and professor who talks about history and video games, The History Respawned. One of the latest episodes talks about Odyssey, it really is interesting and let's you understand the amount of resources big developers put on setting visual accuracy and environment coherence, something that dwarfs most movies.

This is genuinely the best comparison video that I've seen on this game. Not only do you show damned glorious angles from both reality and the game, but the fact that you discuss the history and the scenery. Honestly, you should do all of their games - based on your ability to travel. Hell, I'd totally donate a 'Send Super Bunnyhop On A World-Game/Present-History Assassin's Creed Comparison Tour.' Incredible footage, also! Subscribed!

George, i'm finally watching this video as I am nearing the end of my journey in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I gotta say, you called the shot you have gotten "breathtaking" and I wholeheartedly agree. This was an amazing extension of my journey through the game, and I sincerely thank you for making this video.

I lived in Greece for four years and spent a lot of time at different places there. When the game came out going round them was the first thing I did. You should have gone to Cape Sounion and the temple of Poseidon too.

AC Odyssey might not what I would considered a good RPG game or a good "Assassin's Creed" game for that matter, but there is no denying that it has an amazing historical environment & lanscape locations, just like AC Origins.

Yeah but just the environment, the rest is so historically inaccurate that really makes me cringe like the warrior women(particularly funny are the Athenian ones) or the ridiculous armors and weapons.

Gameplay is repetitive but having a really large bright 4k TV and surround sound made this game into a legit experience for me. Seeing all the little torches light up during the night over the Greek islands with the music softly playing is so emotive. Having the meat of the real history to dive into makes it a great piece of edutainment as well.

I can't believe they actually turned AC Odyssey into a real country. It goes to show the length these developers will go to make their games truly immersive.

Assassin's creed has definitely lost its touch, but I do think people are too hard on it, sure the new ones aren't as good the old ones but the amount of effort ubisoft put to make these places thrive is absolutely great, love exploring assassin's creed just to take in the sights haha
