Apologies for the poor quality - had to use my old camera for this one! Audio removed once I get inside the cathedral as my boots were creaking the whole way round. 😆
Wells Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Wells, Somerset, England, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle and seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, whose cathedra it holds as mother church of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Built in 1176-1450 to replace an earlier church on the site since 705, it is moderately sized for an English cathedral. Its broad west front and large central tower are dominant features. It has been called "unquestionably one of the most beautiful" and "most poetic" of English cathedrals.
Its Gothic architecture is mostly in Early English style of the late 12th - early 13th centuries, lacking the Romanesque work that survives in many other cathedrals. Building began about 1175 at the east end with the choir. Historian John Harvey sees it as Europe's first truly Gothic structure, breaking the last constraints of Romanesque. The stonework of its pointed arcades and fluted piers bears pronounced mouldings and carved capitals in a foliate, "stiff-leaf" style. Its Early English front with 300 sculpted figures, is seen as a "supreme triumph of the combined plastic arts in England". The east end retains much ancient stained glass. Unlike many cathedrals of monastic foundation, Wells has many surviving secular buildings linked to its chapter of secular canons, including the Bishop's Palace and the 15th-century residential Vicars' Close. It is a Grade I listed building.

Wow! It is the sheer scale of the place that is truly impressive and it is perhaps only when we see one of England's Cathedrals that we can, today, even start to understand just how important and powerful the church was in centuries past. Loved the cloister windows, the little chapels and those recumbent stone effigies look poised to sit up and come to life at any moment. The automatic glass door made me smile as it seems so alien to the rest of the surroundings. Despite the grandeur of the Cathedral itself, that tower/gatehouse with passageway, that we see just before you go inside, perhaps appeals to me most. Something about the juxtaposition of the adjacent buildings. Whilst grand in and of itself, quite humble next to the Cathedral. Thank you for the interesting film xxx

Hi, I recently discovered that John Still Bishop of Bath and Wells is my 13th great grandfather. I visited Wells the other day before I knew who he was. Was quite a spontaneous trip and was late so did not go in the cathedral. Since I have learnt who this man is to me I want to go back and explore the cathedral for myself. I believe the effigy of John Still Bishop of Bath and Wells is at 19 minutes and 19 seconds into the video. Thank you for sharing
