Hiiiiiiiii!!!! Welcome back to Stuart Moores Textiles' RU-vid Chanel, a place where I, Shelagh (pronounced Shay-la), textile artist extraordinaire (Stuart was my great grandpa), attempt to share my passion for all things at the intersection of textile art / natural plant dye / zero waste / slow fashion / visible mending / quilting / knitting / sewing / etc.
I have done a lot of visible mending for clients over the years and these are my top ten basic principles for how I tackle a visible mending project. You don't need a lot of technical skill to mend your own clothes with visible mending which is why I think it is THE BEST!
Let's stop fast fashion by creating sustainable slow fashion habits starting with mending the clothing we already have. What do you think? Want to join me?

Turns out I've been relying too much on the weak fabric around holes, in high stress areas, and didn't even realize it--explains why my mending hasn't been successful. Thank you for the tip, I was ready to give up! Would not have figured it out on my own.

Hello! My apologies for the weird sound. I make these videos for Instagram and cross upload them to RU-vid for folks to watch on either platform. I have just listened to the video here on RU-vid and I see what you are saying. On Instagram the sound is even and normal but for whatever reason on RU-vid the sound levels have been warped. Next time I upload a video, I can keep and eye on this and make sure the sound levels are consistent. Thanks for letting me know!

I’ve been charged with saving my husband’s favorite shirt. It would probably be easier to make another but this denim shirt is already soft and he really really likes it. I need to reattach part of the collar, add a patch to 1 elbow so I’m doing both, the cuffs, y’all get it. 😂 Anyway, this video was inspiring and so helpful. I went thru many searches to finally something helpful. Thanks so much

Hi, Margot, thanks for your feedback. I am new to video making so the first couple that I made had sound levels that are inconsistent and at times too loud. I have gotten a whole lot of comments about this and worked out the sound issues in my more recent videos. Learning video editing programs is a huge learning curve and has taken a massive amount of time. I hope there is still something you can get from this video I made, it was a labor of love. ✌️

@weathersbk

This is a great video - very helpful. I found it looking for sashiko repair of rear pocket edge rips (right down the edge of the pocket. Do you rip out the double sewn seam of the pocket and fold it back to make your repair? It looks like you might - looks like the patch goes under the pocket side seam. How do you sew the pocket seams in place again? The material is so thick that I'm afraid I won't be able to get my needle through.
@stuartmoorestextiles
@stuartmoorestextiles 3 года назад
It is a little tough to get through all of the pocket stitches when you put them back but it is not too hard if you use a patch that isn't too thick. I add both of the double stitching back but I promise it's not too hard! :)
@nancy-katharynmcgraw2669
@nancy-katharynmcgraw2669 3 года назад
If you machine sew the pocket back on...through 3 layers of denim, best to select a CJeans" needle, or a "Jeans/Leather" needle for safer machine repairs. Also, check the type of stitch you are choosing, if your are using an electronic machine. Usually those choices are: thin fabric, medium fabri , thick fabric, knit fabric or jeans/leather fabric.

@stuartmoorestextiles
@stuartmoorestextiles 2 года назад
I do use a thimble, different thimbles for different projects. For heavy duty stitching I use a metal thimble, needle grabber silicone finger and thumb thimbles, and plyers if needed. For needles I use sashiko needles for big jobs. Hope that helps and happy mending! ☺️

Do you simply press the edges of your patches under or do you sew them so they won’t fray? Also, do you machine sew the patches in place first before doing the ‘visible’ part of the mending?
@stuartmoorestextiles
@stuartmoorestextiles 3 года назад
I just press and tuck the edges under. Fraying isn't a problem if your stitches are close to each other but if you want to make double sure there aren't any stray threads you can cut your patch with pinking shears which I do all the time. I don't use a sewing machine for my mends but if your mend is in an easily accessible area a sewing machine is a great option. Happy mending!
@reneepuvvada
@reneepuvvada 3 года назад
Incredible content and work. I would love to replicate this for a pair of jeans I have. Where do you buy your threads and patches? Or, where can I find the materials that you use? Also, what kinds of stitches do you use for the patches (as I see you press the patches and then fold them under)? I am a complete newb at this, and think this methodology is just brilliant. Thank you!

Hi Kate. It's true, the music is not well mixed in this video. Many people have pointed this out and I appreciate the feedback. As I have mentioned before, I was new to video making when I made this video so my skills were not where they are now with regard to video editing and mixing. There are many more videos I have made since that have better audio mixing. A few people have suggested putting the captions on and turning the volume down, perhaps you can try this?
