Visible Review: Is it Really Cheap Truly Unlimited Internet for Your RV or Boat?

Our Review of Visible ($40/month Verizon based unlimited data plan) as a Home Internet Replacement for RVers, Cruisers and Rural homes.
Visible is a prepaid brand owned by Verizon that launched in May 2018. In June 2019, they removed their 5 Mbps on device data speed cap (but the cap remains for mobile hotspot use) - and since then it's become a popular mobile internet option for RVers and cruisers.
At $40/month, it is an incredible deal and is currently one of our top pick data plans.
However the plan has some 'gotchas' that may not make it your ideal primary mobile internet option.
We've been testing the plan since April, and in this video we share the realities of the plan (network management, lower priority, mobile hotspot cap, video throttling, high ping times and smartphone requirements) so you can determine if it's right for YOUR mobile internet arsenal and needs.

Visible has launched 'Party Pay' - with new group pricing as low as $25/month. Referral codes are now retired. For more on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zybro6VMuNg.html

Just wanted to point out to anyone considering using Visible's service, they have really high ping times (latency) between 100-200 ms which is almost unusable for real-time gaming and other delay sensitive applications. They are using Verizon towers, but are piggybacking their own server/firewall/VoIP gateway/packet filtering, which introduces a fairly high latency and speed decrease while watching RU-vid and other video streams. The highest speed test I've seen is around 10-15Mbps with perfect 5 bars of signal. Also, you must use their app for voice calls, since they carry voice over the data channel (not VoLTE like Verizon does). Due to the high latency times, their app review in PlayStore is littered with complaints about crappy/choppy audio (no wonder). So, while their pricing might look attractive, as they say "There's always a catch, and you get what you pay for." ;)

I picked up a second line using Visible for our RV. In general I’m happy since it gives us diversity since my primary iPhone is on AT&T. There have been times when only one or the other would work. I did run into an issue at Sacramento Pass near Great Basin NP where I think the lack of roaming or 3G usage burnt me. Thanks for the reminder in the video. Being prepaid I just drop this anytime so I’m still a happy camper, but better educated with this video.

I have Visible and really like it. We winter in Quartzsite AZ and found the signal there to be adequate for streaming most of the time except for January when it’s almost nonexistent. We also have the $65 Verizon prepaid plan for our MiFi hotspot and it performs about the same there as Visible does.

Hello new friend! Thanks for the info. We are stationary full timers in Utah and will be hitting the road in 2021 and have been researching what the best way to stay connected will be for us. Currently we pay $300 a month between our 2 phones on Verizon and Comcast for internet. Really hoping not to have to pay that much. Just started a test this month of Visible to support my traveling internet needs. So far so good in my most regular travel destination in particular. Anyone tested whether the same limits on the mobile hotspot apply to a direct USB connection to the laptop? Xfinity stream experienced dropouts, particularly in the early evening hours, with hotspot. Will try using the USB connection instead of the hotspot to see whether performance improves. Interestingly, the biggest issue I have had were regular dropouts while I was parked at a Xfinity hotspot with a strong signal to watch a sporting event.

There is a cap if you use the hotspot. It is capped at 5 MBPS! You will rarely get the 5 MBPS! I get anywhere from less than 1 MBPS to in the high 3s. Still I can watch movies on Netflix and other apps and it is a really good value for a single person that does not play the games. If you are a casual user it is great!

I just signed up with Visible this week and porting was a pleasure. I strongly disagree with those "iffy porting reports." at 11:02 . Porting was simple, solid and fast and Visible kept me up to date via email during the entire porting process. Nothing "iffy" about that! Just good solid service. This video made me leery of porting to them and yet, that was very very wrong of me. It went GREAT! :) Actually, the entire process including swapping my old phone for a really nice new free ZTE phone, sign up and payment were all a pleasure! The download speeds at Speakeasy were 10mbps last night. I am extremely happy with Visible thus far. If that changes, I'll leave an update but I am so happy I chose them based on another RU-vid video from another knowledgeable RV er'. Oh! And their customer support people are as excellent as any other part of their service. Questions I had were answered quickly by smart friendly people.

I will agree with you in that; I wonder if it depends on whether or not some individuals read and follow instructions that ensure "Not all cases are the same" before they blame it on the carrier(s), , , versus how many are legit! *Using an android phone for hotspot (like a Google Pixel unlocked) provides no throttled hotspot speeds, as well as no 1 device at a time limit. *as for the hotspot "going to sleep" issue, Android phones have an option to disable that in system settings.

axllebeer this is actually the exact answer I was looking for. I have never used androids, I am considering buying the Visible R2 phone with visible service and connecting to a mobile router/AP to broadcast Wi-Fi. From your experience, how long do you see the Wi-Fi hotspot staying connected without needing to do anything to it once it is set up?
@axllebeer
@axllebeer 4 года назад
@@silverrx9509 If you don't do anything to change the timeout then most devices will automatically turn off the hotspot after 15 minutes or so. As for the R2, I have one and the speed is limited as well as the number of devices. It will only allow you to connect 1 device at a time. Bonus info, I found recently that the R2 will work on Total Wireless as well as Visible.

Watched this video using my Visible Galaxy A50 as a hot spot as my regular home internet service is currently down. Video quality was 720p. As far as speeds go I've always seen just under 6 mbps download speeds with uploads from under 1 mbps to almost three. Ping rates have been anywhere from the low 40's to over 200. I just did a test for this post and my numbers were a download speed of 5.85, upload of 1.82 and a ping rate of 52. This is fairly typical. I've probably checked the speeds about 6 to 8 times since I've have Visible which is just over a month. It is currently serving all my needs as a phone service and it's been fine in the 3 or 4 times I've used it as a hot spot. I've not yet used a hot spot outside my home but the phone service has been great.

Great content - see why the MIA get the good stuff 1. I use Total Wireless (Verizon) for this, not unlimited, but backup for my primary T-Mobile service, 10$/5Gb beyond 1st 5Gb/mo 2. Take the case off the android smartphone before using it as a hot spot - or you might get a swollen battery... 3. I like my GL iNet mini router to share the signal with the rest of the coach (wx Station, laptop, tablet, etc). It keeps the smartphone hotspot active...

This video answered my lingering questions about the Visible option. I was concerned about the phone being a hotspot and what limitations that brought. As I suspected there would be signal compromises. No, I think I'll stay with my WirelessBuy plan for unlimited data via the Nighthawk hotspot device (connect 10 devices) coupled with my $30.00 MiMo antenna helping the signal. I get the full T-Mobile coverage map along with Canada and Mexico roaming data. I do experience "management", but only rarely (maybe once) it was unusable. If WeBoost ever lowers their booster prices I would consider that. $500 is a lot of grocery money!

This was very informative. I didn't realize you got significantly higher pings with Visible compared to regular Verizon service.
@MobileInternetResourceCenter

Indeed - that is a really painful downside of Visible for certain uses, though for a lot of typical web surfing that sort of latency is barely noticeable. It all depends on your needs.

Any talk or rumors of Visible offering a Jet Pack service for data only? Is there a fix to be able to use a Visible sim in any dedicated hot spot device?

That ping speed seems to choke up VOIP calls. Have you noticed better video with a VPN running on the phone? Thanjs
@my_channel_44
@my_channel_44 4 года назад
Ping is terrible because the speeds are slow. The way they can shove 20 x 2 Mbps connections over a 2Mbps backhaul, is by contention management, called 'contention ratio'. 2Mbps is a measure of width of the road, not speed. So by slowing down everyone to a snails pace, it's possible to fit more traffic on the same road.

1:07 Wow! Now that explains why I wasn't getting no network reception while I was travelling out of my city. Forget out of state, I drove out of my city and didn't get even a single bar on the network icon!! Literally 0 !! So, visible's native LTE network is not always active everywhere compared to their 4g, 3g and Roaming networks. Plus, visible does not pick or share other towers when you're on roaming. Hence, I had 0 coverage when I was on those interstates. However, At home, it gave me fantastic coverage with high speed and high resolution video streaming !!

I’m in the Chicagoland area....I’m always over 5mbps for hotspot....I use it as my backup....I’m still using the ATT iPad landing...it all depends on your location and the unlimited deal for WiFi...nice review The other thing I noticed with a VPN on....you’re speeds are faster...ping times are much shorter...the fine print also states speeds are between 5-16 mbps, so it will vary

The ONLY thing I care about is the data speeds. At home i mostly will be using Chromecast to cast video to my projector, but if no cap it should be fine. The HotSpot, as long as I always get 2 mbps I will be happy, that is all Netflix requires, as well as most streaming services. I am not even using it as a phone, I have a Mint mobile plan, 15 a month for unlimited calls and texts as well as 3 gigs of data, that does me fine.
@nlm1953

I started using Visible on an iPhone 7 Plus in July. There were a couple of hiccups in the beginning and because everything is done online (no phone number to call them and no stores to go see them) it took a little longer to get those bugs fixed. Since then, it’s worked very well, and they have provided much quicker customer service. Just recently I decided to try to use my phone to provide my complete home internet needs. Capping the mobile hotspot speed at 5Mbps is not a problem for my me, and I’ll never need to tether more than a couple of devices at the same time. My biggest question was whether or not I could tether my smart TV to my phone, and the answer is YES! That makes me very happy. So, I’m experimenting with it over the next fee weeks, and if I’m still happy by mid-December, or so, I’m canceling my current internet provider and saving about $50-$60/mo. The one negative for me right now is that my smart TV uses an internal chrome cast which is not compatible with Philo on my Apple devices. For those of you that don’t know about Philo, it is a streaming app that provides nearly 60 of the most popular cable channels. However, I’ve read that Roku (and a few other streaming devices) are compatible. So, if I use a compatible stick (the cheapest option) I can stream my Philo channels through my TV. Fingers crossed! Thanks for the review and comparison of mobile internet devices. Very helpful! Happy Holidays!

I cannot change anything on my gUDP or I lose it all and it is really great. However, my wife wants a smartphone and I just happen to have an extra Samsung 7 non-prepay. I called Verizon and they said maybe it will work or maybe not bring it in and we will try. I told them I would be a new customer ( a slight obfuscation ). So we shall see in a few days what happens. Price is our motivator and so is unlimited text and voice as our old plan texts bump the top often. The hotspot capability is a bit of a motivator since I can now leave my smartphone in the RV connected to the ham radio stuff, TV's and computer. All-in-all, a great bargain for $40 to keep the wife happy, gain a lot of functionality and another on the road hotspot. Yea Verizon for some good plans and leading the pack.

I currently have Verizon business with unlimited data on my phone and my wife's phone. When I have traveled for business (airline/rental car) I have always used my phone hotspot to give my laptop connectivity to internet/emails. But we recently bought a Class C motorhome and will be traveling to nearly 40 states on four regional trips this year and next year. So, is my current Verizon phone sufficient OR do I still need to purchase a Visible phone and $40/month plan? If I still need to make the purchase, how will this improve my connectivity on the open road vs. what I already have? Thanks for any advice, insights and knowledge anyone can pass along to this #Newbie.

I signed up with Visible and bought their entry level R2 for about $20, to see if I could use it to provide a wifi hotspot for use in our RV. It stays plugged in to USB power 24/7 and I use its 1 wifi hotspot to connect to a TP-Link AC750 Wireless Portable Nano Travel Router (Amazon for about $35) to support multiple devices (mostly TV). I can't say whether its the phone or because its always connected to the router that keeps it from going to sleep, but with power to the RV and the phone connected to the router, all stays awake. I turn off the TV at night (using a Fire TV Stick for streaming) and when I turn on the TV in the morning, everything is awake and connected...
