That was such a romp down memory lane for me. My grandmother - a very upright Edwardian lady - was a fantastic needle worker. When I was 6 she decided it was time for me to learn how to darn socks. The same day she also taught me how to sew on buttons “properly”. My dear old dad came home from work that day to find all his socks had been carefully darned by me and I had also added a button to each toe. Grandma found it hysterical! Not so sure about dad! But amongst the needlework equipment I inherited from her was her darning mushroom, which she had inherited from her mother. And I have used it a lot over the years - and often considered adding a button to the toe for good measure.

This is therapy for me: my sister learned to darn from our mother, the 'proper' invisible way (oh, the agonies of an imperfect match, or misaligned weave!) I, being less perfectionist and secretly more rogue, ended up not even trying - this and many other things you show us each week. But now, watching how you approach things, especially your ethos of 'I was here', is giving me courage to do things my way, and thoroughly enjoy the process, and the results. An absolutely delightful video, TFS. It brought back memories of my mother teaching me to darn socks - I still have the darning egg. Precious memories. She knit argyle socks for my dad and kept them mended. It also reminded me of someone I worked with when I was in college. I have no idea why we were talking about socks and darning but he was adamant that he was never going to wear darned socks ever again, they reminded him of poverty and his unhappy childhood. It's so interesting how a topic, such as darned socks, can stir up such strong, yet different, emotions in people.

Kathryn I was thrilled to hear that you are a ‘tutaat’ knitter too. Translated: Toe up, two at a time. That’s how I used to do my socks all the time, but then I got both first and second sock syndrome. I just couldn’t bear to knit another sock. I have a pair almost finished at the moment, but just can’t keep going with them. Maybe one day!!! I also loved your darning. I was starting to get interested in darning a little while ago and bought a book by Flora Collingwood-Norris called Visible Creative Mending, but alas that is in the naughty corner too. My addiction at the moment is slow stitching which is why I love everything that you are doing in your videos. I just can’t work out how you find time to do it all. It’s always great to see the practical daily applications of these traditional needlework skills. It’s still “slow stitching”, you’re still doing running stitch, and you’re turning something, that could be seen as a chore by many, into an enjoyable “project” with an aesthetically pleasing result at the end of it…and, of course you’ve illustrated a way in which we can all contribute to sustainability and promote the “eco culture”. Have your children showed any interest in learning these basic skills at all? BTW I’ve got several darning mushrooms, which I adore, and I’m a big fan of any tool that has a double use and keeps everything together. Big 👍 for the multiple project bag thing. It’s the only way I can work without getting my knickers in a twist trying to find what I need all of the time, having multiple things on the go at any one time. I’ve just started knitting net bags to use for this and use up all of my old squeaky acrylic yarns that I used when I was practicing my knitting technique.

Hello Kathryn....thank you so much for the great video! I am an avid toe-up sock knitter and knit all my and my husband's socks. I've never done two at a time....maybe one day! I don't knit scrappy socks, but I do knit the toes, heels and cuffs in different colours. I have literally boxes of scraps and ball ends of sock yarn......if you ever run out, let me know! Lol Although I do many crafts, including spinning and weaving, I have only recently come across slow stitching and in particular your channel, and I am hooked! It has come at the right time, as I am due to have a major operation in June, so I am busy planning lots of little projects to keep me occupied! Keep up the good work!! Love from the West Coast of Scotland xx

Hello Anne Thank you so much for your kind words, I am so pleased you have discovered slowstitch, I am sure it will bring you pleasure. Regarding your sock scraps, have you thought of a mitred square blanket? When my scraps get extreme, I make one and so far, they have been appropriated by various family members. I am thinking of making another one soon, I might do a video. 😁 I wish you all the best for your operation in June. ❤️

I love your darned sock. It’s beautiful! I have a hole in a cotton blanket that needs mending. I’m sure I can do a decent job now. I do very much like visible mending. 🧦Also I would love to learn how to make socks the way you do. I’m trying to be a more sustainable person each and every day. Thank you for sharing Kathryn. Yes please to sock knitting videos. The darning was so relaxing to watch and brought back so many memories of 'make do and mend'. I remember when Woolworths started selling faux leather elbow patches, perforated around the edge for easy attachment to jumpers/sweaters. I thought they were the height of sophistication but my Mum was very sniffy and said they were "a waste of money and for people who were too lazy to darn." 😁 Mary x ❤

I’ve always wanted to knit myself a pair of socks but thought they were too complicated, I have just found an easy pattern so if I knit them I will know how to darn them when and if the need arises. I have never darned anything before but I do remember my Dad doing it. Another useful skill you have shared with us, thank you x

A pair of my hand knit socks needs to be mended so your video is timely. In the past I’ve used a different method that results in something that looks more like a woven patch but I’m going to try your way of doing it. Love the look of it. I’ve knit quite a few pairs of socks but I’m always refining, so I’d be interested in watching you knitting a sock. Thank you so much!

This is so timely. I have a pair of good ol' socks that need mending, but I've never been very confident of my darning. I appreciate seeing the process up close, as no one every taught me. I just tried but wasn't too happy with my results. Your information and process were so helpful. And, though I've made quite a few socks over the years, I'd love to see how you knit two at a time on a circular needle; cannot picture that. Plus, I'm sure I have second sock syndrome, so I would very much like to see how you make yours. Thanks! Oh, and I don't have a darning mushroom, but I do have two antique eggs with perfect handles.

I was very lucky to be at four workshops run by Celia Pym in Bristol. All visible mending related. Fabulous. In the final workshop she brought in a bag of oranges and gave us one each for sock darning. Then we ate them - the oranges, not the socks 😂 I’m a four-pin-cuff-down gal. But I do knit both socks in tandem, section by section, to avoid second-sock syndrome. I would LOVE to know how you do your toe up version. It’s something I’ve never had success with! Thank you again for a great video. Loving them all ❤

Here I am watching the videos I missed 😉 My grandmother never used a mushroom or any other object. Where you put the mushroom, she would put her hand full of calluses from hard work. So I started darning like she used to do, but, of course, I was never able to do such a wonderful job as she did. Everything would be perfect and smooth, but she used the same colour 😆I only saw these objects to darn, maybe 6, 7 years ago! 🩷💛💙💚🤎♥️🩵🧡🤍💜

I love making socks but I have that virus...lol...I make one and seem to have a block about starting sock two. I am considering wearing unmatching. Funny enough this would not upset my tidy Virgo mind in any shape or form. Wonky personality obviously. We are coming out of a hot summer and I can feel my sock knitting itch. It is especially nice to know another body that loves wearing handmade socks. My friends don't really understand my love of handmade socks but that's ok. It would be a boring world if we all had the same likes or dislikes. Anyway I am waffling on. Thank you for chatting with me. I will now jump across to your Wonky Log Cabin video. It's a rainy cool day here in Brisbane, Australia and I have 10 days of bliss just doing my thing whilst I babysit my daughters fur babies. Heaven. Toodle pip.

Toodle pip, I love that expression, my Dad used to say it 😁 I also wear odd socks sometimes as all my most recent pairs are the same, except different colours. I have often thought about just knitting one at a time and not worrying about 'pairs'.. that would be another solution to second sock syndrome. 😂❤️

Beautiful and useful! I have a ragwool bed sock with a long split in its sole. It will now be more confidently repaired. I recently repaired several garments sewing by hand while sitting outside in the sun with my cat. It was lovely, quiet, and satisfying! Btw, I love your beautiful handknit socks. I wish my granny had taught me how to darn. I've done it a couple of times, but not so well. Your demo is very good and encouraging. I can't imagine allowing such works of useful art to have a shortened life due to fixable weak spots/holes. Cheers
