Another idea is to get a clear ball ornament and fill with scraps from the prior year and write the year on the ornament. A memory of your makes!

This brought me back to elementary school when my art teacher would bring her yarn scraps in and the class would dip them in glue and make designs over balloons. When the glue dried we’d pop the balloon and be left with cute little yarn decorations. Usually did them around Easter because they looked a bit like eggs.

For a hot minute, I did yarn mandalas and had oodles of scraps. I finally attached those scraps together (not bothering to hide the ends) and relearned Tunisian crochet with that yarn. The pads I made were just large enough for cat beds so I donated the finished products to the Humane Society. The ends sticking out of the pads were great for the kittens to play with. Win-win!

I make hats, scarves, and am trying mittens, to give to folks who are unhoused. Those scraps add up and, because I stick to neutral or neural-ish colors, they blend pretty well into scarves and simple beanie style hats. It's nice because every once in awhile there'll be a few stitches of yellow or some other bright color! Ear warmers now, too, are good scrap busters. I hate throwing away perfectly good yarn even if it is only 3" long!

I made a basket with scrap yarn to hold more scrap yarn haha! I like to make little 5" squares out of scrap yarn and keep it. Once I have enough of them, I plan to sew them together into one big blanket. My plan is a king sized blanket, so I'm working toward 360 (I'll get there someday!)

You can tie tens of squares together with scrap yarn, for easy counting and not losing them. Have fun with that. I kept a spare square (made specially,) from the granny slippers I have made, to make a blanket, and be able to see what combos I made for whom. Some others are from blankets, so I know which ones I've done. I put 5 granny squares together to make small craft baskets, with a plain base. And do handles on top.

I no longer use acrylic or non natural yarn for animals..we had some pet mice and I used polyfil stuffing and yarn scraps for nests ..two mice wound the fiber around their little arms and cut off the circulation..I was heartbroken to see that two mice wound up with a stump leg because of this.😢..so PLEASE ..no polyfil or acrylic yarn for animals...only short natural fibers..and thank you for mentioning this in your video

I've cut up scraps of non-treated, pure wool roving and let my friend's kindergarten-age twins use forks to pull it apart like you would shred beef/chicken for sandwiches. They basically shred it back into fluff and then leave it out (after I've checked it) for the murder of crows that have adopted me. It satisfies their need for destruction, and the crows usually bring them a present. The best present was an old skeleton key!

Something I learned from needle felting is that you can use two pet brushes (the ones with a lot of fine metal bristles) and brush wool yarn scraps between them to turn it into felting wool. It's a cheap way to make small amounts of different colors but because you are turning the wool back to fluff you could also use it as stuffing.

Never thought about using really short scraps for stuffing, good idea. I use scraps that aren't big enough for small projects to make catnip balls for cat toys - tie all my scraps together for multi-color kitty balls. The cats go nuts over them.

I use short scraps for all sorts of things! I keep them handy by my favorite chair, where I like to crochet. Every scrap longer than a foot is put into a large scrap basket. On days when I'm between projects, I pull the basket close and start tying the pieces of yarn together, using a granny knot and leaving one-inch tails. As I go, I wind the yarn into a ball, allowing it to change colors as it will. When I get a big (think basketball) ball made, I start to crochet a small lap blanket or even a small blanket, using a single strand of a coordinating color along with the scrap yarn to make the items warm. Both the lap blanket and the small afghan are big hits at the nursing home in our suburban neighborhood. The residents there love the bright colors and the short tails of the yarn, which allow their nervous fingers to stay busy. I usually get bored tying all those knots, so I recruit my neighbor's grandson, Joseph. He likes to do something new and I plan on allowing him to accompany me to the nursing home to hand out the things he helped to make!

When I have several left over small balls of colored yarn, I buy three or four off-white color skeins like eggshell. Then I use one colored strand, and one eggshell strand (two strands), and single crochet a square, rectangle, circle, or hexagon rug, tying the colored balls together as they run out. They are easily washable, and can decorate the bed, go across the couch, be thrown on the floor for baby to lay on, or left on the floor as a rug. I have several that are about 30 years old, and still be washed and used. Many times, I can find neutral color skeins of yarn at the thrift stores, as well as, the small balls of leftover yarn.

Did you use the Russian join or the surgeon's knot to attach the colours? This is on my must try list but I don't like knots in my knitting projects and this is the first time I have heard of the Russian join.
@JustWriter
@JustWriter Год назад
@@kerryw6360 what's a surgeon's knot? I like to use square knots and then weave in ends. But, I haven't tried weaving in ends between the ply with a sharp needle yet. Apparently, it creates more resistance. I'll have to try that soon.
@kerryw6360
@kerryw6360 Год назад
@@JustWriter I've never actually tried it, but I've seen you tube videos showing magic balls made using this knot (also referred to as an invisible knot). I don't generally knot anything in my knitting , so have been hesitant to give it a try and was curious what your technique was, since you've made a scrap yarn ball before.

Great ideas! I could see those yarn pegs doing double duty as decor until they are needed. I have one of those huge pickle jars and i will roll up tiny balls after a project and toss them in. I got the idea from my button jar. I typically do that for the really small scraps that won't make a bigger ball but aren't quite big enough to really do anything else with. It sits out in the open next to my button jar and is a reminder of past projects. It brings me joy 🙂

Not sure if someone already said this, but, I make "scrapghans" by crocheting my scraps continuously in rows. They look sort of "retro," but, they are unique and can keep someone in need warm. Leftover yarn can also be crocheted into little toys, or donated to schools or children's museums to be used for art projects 😊. I just subscribed...thank you for posting such a helpful video. I am a retired Special education teacher, and I have used scraps of yarn for all kinds of projects. I also crochet hats, Afgans, and floor mats for our Abused women and children’s shelter. I use the yarn scraps to make granny squares and then crochet the granny squares together. The last thing I wanted to say is thank you so much for giving such a wonderful verbal description of what you do. I have been blind all my life and there are so many crochet videos on RU-vid that I cannot use because all they provide is background music with verbal or even text description of what they are doing. When they provide captions with their videos, the screen reader feature on my iPhone will not read them. I can’t tell you how many people I have respectfully written and ask them to put a text copy of their pattern or a verbal description of what they are doing on their videos and I’ve gotten no response. of course, I can’t see all the Pinterest pictures but thank you for your verbal descriptions of what you do. I used to do string art along time ago and would be interested in doing it again. I hope I can find some free patterns.

I've done the clothes pin method when I had specific colours for a blanket project...I'd clip them onto my work basket (yes, crocheted from scrap yarn) so that I knew which colour I was reaching for..it's easier to see the bulked colour on the peg rather than a single strand..and I love making scrap baskets, bags or blankets..they are great for holding projects, scraps or balls of yarn..for taller baskets I've taken to lining them with plastic gutter guard to help them stand up when empty..I of course then crochet a lining to hide the plastic, thus using up more scrap yarn..

What a great list! I especially love your idea of making pom-poms. If folks don't have a pom-pom maker, there are vids on how to make them using just a fork. They're quick and easy (and fun!) to make, and one thing you can do with all those pom-poms is donate them to your local animal shelter...they make awesome cat toys!

I was planning on using all of my different yarn scraps to frankenstein together a blanket. All sorts of different ones, the big bulky ones, small fine ones, chenille, velvet, woven... all of them. I want to make small squares with each individual scrap and then combine them all together into one big blanket, with all loose ends sticking out about half and inch or so out.

Another thing you can do with yarn scraps (if you're feeling generous or you spin your own yarn.) is card it into your own roving wool on your blending board or hand carders, just make sure it's a thing enough to blending into it but then it can creating a beautiful blend, you could also offer it to your spinning friends to do it for you as well and they may spin some yarn for you. :) I plan on taking some of my scraps and blending it in.

I can definitely recommend string art! It's a lot of fun, and makes for beautiful decorations. I made pretty intricate ones when I was younger (mostly with flowers, haha). I think we used to use crochet thread (some sort of lace weight cotton, at least) and the nails would be 2-3 centimeters. Absolutely no more than five (which I think is about 2 inches), and obviously not too thick.

I like to do hand embroidery as well and I’ve started mixing the two mediums together. I often crochet embroidery floss into three dimensional pieces for my embroidery or I will crochet a grid and then weave, embroider, and crochet designs into it. Yarn scraps are great for this. You can also make beads for jewelry, coasters, funny wigs…or if nothing else, donate them to your local art teacher!

I have two small boxes of my average scraps. Since I make plushies I've used them for embellishments. The smallest goes to stuffing (in a tackle box), the next could be eyes (taped to a board), then horns/ears, then small appendages. It's helpful for pattern testing too since you don't have to cut a bunch of new yarn.

I've owned a couple German shepherds and a few horses over the yrs. It was always fun to find a downed bird nest and see the hair fully utilized. Also I remember being about 5-6 yrs old and having a few light feathers from our chickens. I threw up a feather in the wind and a barn swallow caught it in the air. I felt especially important that day! 😊

THANK YOU for mentioning the birds! I was hoping you wouldn't be recommending that as a way to use them. Not only can they strangle the necks of birds, they can also strangle limbs, cutting off circulation to goes and legs, especially thinner yarn, strings, and hair (don't leave human hair, either!). For those wishing to gather nesting supplies to leave out for birds, make a bundle of small twigs, cut grass/hay, or tufts of dog or cat fur, loose downy feathers, or plant fluff.

I like to make Magic Cakes with all my acrylic yarn scraps. Then I crochet baskets and bags to use and give away. Cotton scraps are used to make small buntings, motifs, mandalas for decorations. I even make Christmas ornaments from them. Wool yarn scraps make fantastic hot pads, fingerless mitts, or mittens, leggings, slippers and hats and can be used in Punch Needle projects and with Pin Looms.
