Today, I visited the Tianjin Binhai Library in China, a striking architectural marvel once acclaimed by Time magazine as one of the world's must-visit places. Known for its unique design and visual experience, the library has become a hotspot for photographers seeking to capture its beauty. However, despite its captivating exterior, those who come here to read face some challenges due to certain design flaws.
The initial design aimed to house 1.35 million volumes, but in reality, it accommodates only 300,000. Insufficient lighting poses a challenge, making prolonged reading almost difficult. The library was envisioned to evoke the feeling of a mountain of books, but in reality, only the bottom floor holds physical books, while the upper levels are adorned with printed images. If actual books were to be placed, the organization and reading experience could be problematic.
This library stands as both an outstanding design achievement and a place facing challenges and controversies. In this video, I'll take you through the library entrance corridor, explore the interior design, and showcase how the library transforms in charm during the nighttime.
Video timestamps:

I am from US. I am very impressed. Everyone can have a seat, open air space is perfect for a theater for The Arts. Like an amphitheater for debates, plays, symphonies, etc. Out building are old, dirty, filled with homeless because it's the only public place they can not be kicked out of. I don't see any homeless in this video.

The lobby is beautiful and impressive, though not functional from a library standpoint. It definitely works as a tourist attraction, and that can be beneficial to the surrounding businesses. I agree with the poster who mentioned that getting rid of the giant pearl would be better - when it’s lighted it’s distracting and incongruous, and when it’s not it still blocks light. The children’s area is so pretty, and well laid out to boot. I’d love to take my kids there! The stacks and periodical room seem pretty ordinary, but I really like how much natural light they have (though I hope they’ve coated the windows to avoid fading the books). All in all if this were my municipal library I’d be quite pleased with it.

@@hjjiang7766 They can't open it, because it isn't a book ! It is a tablet, a so called "tabula ansata " with the date of indepencence of the USA. May I advise you to visit a library before you comment on a post. Prefereably one with real books !

@@franskuijs3556 Isn't it Americans who love to lie the most? They claim to be weapons of mass destruction with laundry detergent in their bags, and then start a war, causing thousands of people to die from their lies

Due to safety issues, books will be placed on the first floor. Above a certain safety height, books will be replaced with stickers.

From your comments, I can see that you are also one. A very knowledgeable scholar. Because you don't understand the structure of China. China is indeed an one-party dictatorship. Do you know why China's modernization is progressing so fast? The first is the advantage of one-party dictatorship, and the second is that China has a very large population and a large labor force. If you don't play to your strengths in projects like infrastructure that require a large number of people. How to rehouse so many workers in China? Managing a country of 100 million people is not at all the same order of magnitude as managing a country of 1.4 billion people. It can be said that the socialist system was put forward by the Soviet Union, and China's socialism is socialism with its own characteristics. To put it bluntly, China's system is a structure in which capitalist system and socialist system coexist. There is no perfect system. Just like without a perfect person, everything has two sides, white and black, high and low. Just as we look at some injustices in society, so does the large population of China, there will be corruption and the dark side of society. There is an old Chinese saying: when the water is clear, there is no fish. I don't think Westerners understand this sentence either. In Chinese philosophy. The opposites of good and bad, black and white, corruption and clean government, and society certainly coexist, but to control this tipping point is what leaders should do.
