Shanghai, the driver of Chinese commerce and the wealthiest city in China. Also, a very cool city for travelers. It is very modern, some cool sites, and amazing food, but there are a few things you won't like, the prices, the crowded subway and it may be the only place in China where you worry about your wallet.
But it is an amazing city and one of our favorite cities to visit in Asia and of Course China.
Filmed in Shanghai, China on the Bund.

Our Equipment
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.
amzn.to/2L55pDR
We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.
amzn.to/2WbTNFH
We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.
amzn.to/35AWqUs
Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.
amzn.to/2YDeADt
Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here
Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

Yup he got a slight case of the *Mark Weins Syndrome* - Over astonishment at food and radical facial expressions during an exotic dish.. Well, I think I have a touch of that too... Not complaining at all mate not one bit :D

I went in Sept 2013, and trust me, he was not being stared at. I am a 6 foot tall black man; let me tell you. That was STARING. Everywhere I went people were taking pics and wanted to take pics (those who overcame their awe) with me. I really enjoyed it and hope to go back one day.

I lived in both cities and I must say I love Shanghai and it is where I consider home. It is truly the city that never sleeps (Not New York), it always has things happening and is a great place to visit with a lot of things to do.

For hotels, food and drink, HK and Shanghai are probably about the same these days, sure. But I'm looking at apartments for expats, and what you'd get in Shanghai is twice the size as and twice as nice as what you'd get in Hong Kong..!

very cool! I lived in Shanghai for 3 years, and loved it! I never imagine myself living in China for that long before I went to Shanghai, but the city has spring a spell to me.. It's the feeling of diversity that made me feel like I wasn't alone in a country I wasn't even understand the language. The feeling of old china is not really bold in Shanghai, but for living, its perfect. I was still surrounded by chinese culture, with good people from all over the world that became my second family far from home. I went around Shanghai when I'm seeking for old china atmosphere, but then again I can go back 'home' in my old apartment in Shanghai. I would go back to Shanghai in a heart beat! Glad you enjoy Shanghai

Great post! I visited Shanghai three weeks ago and loved it. The people are friendly. The food is super delicious. The metro is a great way to get around. Yes, it is crowded and will have to get used to being pushed around, but it is not rude, it is a matter of space. I highly recommend visiting.

Shanghai was amazing!!! The city has a very young and unique feel to it.. The nightlife was great and I felt very safe traveling solo more so than I have ever felt during my trips to Chicago.. Not to mention, its also very cheap and affordable!

I was in Shanghai for 6 months, and I LOVED it!!! I miss it so much since I'm back in Italy, that's why as soon as possible I would love to go back there (hopefully with a job!). I also went three days in HK, and honestly I found it way much more expensive! in SH I could eat in local restaurants with only 20/30 rmb, while in HK I couldn't find such good prices. Also the same brand of cigarettes I was smoking (the "8" cigarettes, cheapest ones :P), was 4 times more expensive in HK than in SH. to Tavin Wong.... I sincerely think it is a nice nice video, with no need of "professional editing work". there are no "final cut pro" effects, like some other videos that kind of fake everything and make things look shiny and wonderful, when they are not. on the contrary, in my opinion, this video gives relevance not only to the passion of wolter, but it also gives a great kick of reality, with those people passing in front of the camera and do godknowswhat in the background :) that kind of reality that really made me smile and feel "second" homesick. woltersworld nice nice nice video again! :)

The only thing I find expensive in hk is accommodation, mtr is amazingly cheap and efficient, food is cheap if you eat at right places but it's difficult to find good quality cheap accommodation. I'd hate to live in hk with their property prices

Hi Mark, my sister and I backpacked Europe over the summer and your videos were a HUGE help. The German language videos were great. I was told at times that I did not have an accent. Until my vocab ran out lol. It inspired me to learn the language now. Keep doing these videos, they are very informative and helpful. I still watch them now that we're back state side. I was also recently presented with the opportunity to teach in Munich; great city I might add. Thanks again Tschüss, Jon

I have family living in Shanghai and I think that really enhances the experience every time I go back because there is always something to see, do and EAT! I take advantage of the really cheap massages, facials and hair treatments you can get and it is great that many open up till 10 PM at night. I really recommend people checking out the 24/7 spas we have in Shanghai, it is something the younger generations do to hang out with each other. Also the beautiful lavish restaurants that are 5 floors and themed (Maison De L'Hui, Golden restaurant and a restaurant that has a bridge indoors with aquarium underneath your feet). Just an example of the dining scene in Shanghai.

I went to Shanghai around July 2009 and I did like the city. I thought the people were very friendly, the architecture and the buildings were very nice, I did like Zughou a beautiful place. What I didn't like was the insecurity, I was afraid of pick pocketing, I was afraid of police, and I had a bad experience on going out at night, that is the only bad thing about Shanghai. I love Shanghai and I will like to visit that city again.

Cool stuff in Shanghai 1. Chinese history museum. LOTS of cool artifacts and art. 2. Shanghai Art Museum. Largest art museum in all of Asia by square footage. 3. Science Museum. One of world's best science museums. Surprisingly fun 4. Propaganda museum. The place for hilarious t-shirts and posters. This one isn't sanctioned by the Chinese government, so it is harder to find. It is run out of some guy's basement! 5. The Bund. Colonial buildings plus beautiful view of the skyline. 6. Yu Garden. The best old school China site in Shanghai 7. The food. The food is AWESOME 8. Buying every artsy criterion movie for 1 dollar each. Laugh at your friends for blowing 40 dollars to own a copy of Bicycle Thieves or Metropolis. 9. Gun range. You can drink vodka and fire full automatics at the same time!

One thing you also need to watch out for is that not all hotels will accept foreigners; you can't stay in less then 4 star hotel. I first thought it to be a cultural xenophobia, but according to my in-laws who are Chinese and have lived in Shanghai all their lives, it's a business tactic to ensure more revenue from tourists. That being said, Shanghai is an international city, so what are 4 star hotels there are often the North American standards, ie: Holiday Inn, Marriott, etc.

Sure those things close at 11 but there is rarely a situation where anything you need at midnight is not available. And ya the nightlife is one of the main things which is open but it is some of the best in the world. You get the most amazing bars with incredible views of Pudong and guess what, I know this because I live in Shanghai and have been for many years.

in shanghai? I would head into town (about 45 minutes in a taxi) then take a bus tour that goes around the main sites so you can see the main stuff, then on the second go around get out where you liked best but with that much time you can walk the Bund (see my top 10 sites in shanghai video for better tips). and eat some tasty food :)

I lived in Shanghai for seven years as an expat from 07 to 14. Trust me, it is not the most tourist friendly city in the world. In fact, I recommend only visiting if you have friends or family in the city, as it's just an urban mess. Yes, the food's good. Yes, the skyline's impressive. But is it worthy enough to merit a dedicated trip? I'd say not. However, for expats living in China, this is the most expat-friendly city in the country. Embassies are all over the place. Flights are frequent to SE Asia. There are many good foreign restaurants. And a tremendous amount of nice international schools. Adding the relatively modern feel to the city and the locals' relative openness to foreigners, this is a great place to be for the expat. Bear in mind the pollution though. Air Quality Index ratings can routinely hit 150-200+, which can mean hazy skies and smokey air. But life goes on. In comparison, Paris had a virtual lockdown when the index hit 70, and Windsor is Canada's most polluted city- with and AQI average of 75. Hope this helps.

Being a fan of Architecture designs myself, this video has inspired me to go to Shanghai. I plan on doing a bit of couch surfing, so that will help cut my expenses.

woltersworld Thank you Walter, I'll be doing quite a bit of traveling with the pursuit of Architecture in mind. One of my goals is to figure out how they build those massive stone structures. A little bit of Archaeological work if you want to look at it that way. The study of ancient structures is amazing. I believe it's going to be a fruitful year and hope to share it with the world.

Wot48 Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to check out Beijing when I'm in the area. Let's see just how much travel I can get in this year.

I completely forgot about that. yes, super annoying. I think Beijing's stops at like 11, but restaurants are already dead (more or less) by 8 so I can see why they close down :) thanks for watching and commenting!

I'm from Shanghai, and what you said is true, people here is a little less friendly in Shanghai. Largely because many Shanghainese, especially the older generation think that they are the upper class in China. It's is largely due to the glorious history of Shanghai when Shanghai was the largest city in far east (larger than Tokyo). And Shanghai has been the most modern and advanced city in China. So locals would sometimes look down on non-locals. But the younger generation is doing better because Shanghai is being more open and more and more non-locals are coming and mixing. So the barrier I believe is fading.

So the city has changed? When I was in Shanghai in 2009 the people there were friendly.

charlie shake Because you will not spit everywhere! The behaviours of Shanghai locals are more like western people instead of Chinese people from other area. That why most foreigners feel Shanghai locals are friendly but Chinese people from out of Shanghai don't think so.

没必要向外国人解释那么多,以他们的视角,看不到那么深
