Shops close between 2pm and 3pm not because of siesta but because it's lunch time here. Siesta is more like 4pm or so, meaning people don't take breaks to have a siesta, few people can allow themselves to do that.

Jorge Allthedrums mostly old people are the ones that take siestas, the youth in Spain is way to wild to waste 2 hours instead of public drinking etc etc, I'm spanish but I live in the U.S for the last 4 years and this country is trash af when it comes to fun

Pick pockets are a problem... if you are a tourist. I've lived my entire life here and have never in my life had anything stolen, but that's because pick-pocketers specifically target tourists because they are careless and unalerted and carry their homes in backpacks and fanny bags in a very snailish way and are VERY easy to identiffy, we even have a word, it's Guiri. Always try to blend in, drop the socks and sandals, fishing hat, flowered shirts, cargo shorts and wear sunscreen to aboid turning pink. The moment you THINK you've blended in, you've lost your phone, wallet and the cheap phone you just bought after figuring out you lost your phone.
@CalifaJohn1

Not just guiris. I know many Sevillanos who have been pick-pocketed, purse snatched, and robbed at knifepoint. It is a wonderful city, but it's a problem. I couldn't hold onto a bicycle seat when I parked it. The ladrones didn't know it was a guiri bicycle but I had to replace it constantly.
@jorgeferdenav
@jorgeferdenav 10 лет назад
Yes, other people do get pick-pocketed, I didn't say it doesn't happen. People get things stolen every day, just like in other major city in the world, someone might take your wallet in the underground or take your bike's seat just like they might do in NYC or Paris. But most people aren't very worried about it, it's not a common thing, although it does depend on which cities and which parts of them.

@@CalifaJohn1 That must happen in a few of the big cities, in the most touristy areas, like Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Plaza Mayor en Madrid, or in certain parts of Seville. Nevertheless, I'm Spanish, 59, and been to those places several times and nothing has ever happened to me. But, of course, make sure you take the minimum precautions when visiting those areas... like holding your things properly.

A toda criatura I spent years of my youth living in a US slum, so I am aware of how to move defensively. I love Spain and I was never personally atacked there, but a little guy snatched my cell phone out of my pocket in a crowded bar once. By the time I caught up with hm, two guys were beating him up outside the bar because he stole one of their girlfriends’ purses. They beat him bloody and I could not find my cell phone in any of his pockets, so he must have passed it off to an accomplice. In spite of all that happened, the doorman at the bar would not call the police or assist in any way. Nor were the guys planning to make A police report. My Spanish Landlady told me she thought the bar staff was probably in on it. That was in La Macarena neighborhood of Sevilla, which is not very touristy. A more common problem was getting parts stolen off my bicycle. I locked the frame and both wheels to something secure every time I parked it, but after my first two bicycle seats got stolen in the first couple weeks that I had the bike, I finally bought a third seat and payed a metal worker to solder it to the frame. It stayed on after that. Both bicycle seats were stolen in Triana, very much not a touristy neighborhood. I never got attacked because I don’t look like an easy target. Unfortunately, a lot of women I know who need to get around by themselves have been mugged at knifepoint. One of my friends was on her way to a performance in La Judería, Sevilla and a guy on a scooter pulled out a knife and took her costumes from her. I have noticed through all of this that no one reports their crimes to the police. This might be part of how Europe shows low crime rates on the record. But I still LOVE Spain in spite of having a fair amount of small crime.

@@CalifaJohn1 Hi, I regret you having had to go through all that. I feel those things might happen, not only in very touristy areas, as I said, but also in certain "popular" areas of big cities, like Seville.

The language? We americans know less languages than the spaniards. In spain they are bound to know more languages than us, they speak spanish, catalan, portugues, french, and the new generation and professionals speak english. All hotels, restaurants, nightclubs have english speaking staff, and there is an increase of spaniards taking english courses to find jibs abroad. We are the ones who should learn more languages to better understand and communicate with other cultures.

I partially agree. Though having lived here for five years, the Spanish tend to be monolingual, depending on the region. In places like Barcelona, they speak Catalan and Spanish and in Bilbao and San Sebastián, about 1/3 of the residents will speak Euskera (aka Basque). You will find your fair share of English speakers in the tourist areas, though you'll have a better chance of spotting an American Bald Eagle than a French speaker outside of the northern border.

Depends where you go with regards to language. People who live in tourist resorts typically have decent English/German skills. When it came to cities, I just opted for speaking to younger people and found no real problems with communication. Not that it matters anymore since I learned how to speak conversational (not fluent by any means) Spanish after my parents retired to Majorca.

And about he pharmacies. In every city in spain there are several pharmacies open 24 hours per day per week. they take it in turns every week so that you will find some pharmacy alway open in case you need it for an emergency. And you know which one is open that week because all the pharmacies usually have a timetible monthly at the front door. In Spanish we call it "farmacias de guardia".

Correct. I’m American and gas stations and a lot of pharmacies and of course Walmart are open 24/7 so you can get things like that whenever. I’ve gone grocery shopping at 1am before. Not something that I do often however 😂. But it can be a culture shock when the option is not available anymore.

I guess I scored some points with those dudes, huh? lol, Spain is fantastic. @@rhodium1096 Spain has a rich varied and very diverse culture. I never have sangria. I've tried it, but it does not belong to our culture here in the Canary Islands. They serve it mainly at hotels, for tourists. I've never seen a restaurant for native people offering sangria.

I was in Spain just this May and there are points a agree and disagree to: Points I like to disprove: 1. Siesta - I've been to 5 Spanish towns and cities, and for a tourist, you will not have a problem with the siesta culture. Most museums and sights are well open throughout the afternoon, public transportation doesn't rest and majority of shops remain open, except Sundays and Holidays. What you may probably need to contend with are the times restaurants or cafes serve lunch or dinner. Lunch is usually never earlier than 1PM while dinner is never usually earlier than 8PM. Nevertheless, it won't be hard to find small cafes or tapas bars to get meals at standard time. 2. Possibility of getting ripped off - Never happened during my 2-week trip nor I've been in a situation where I felt vulnerable. Was I just lucky? I read up on tourists scams in Spain, and realized, it is unnecessary to develop any fear or worry when coming. I'm not saying it can't happen, but I think you have to be a 'dimwit' to fall victim to possible scams. 3. Language barrier - I say 50% of people you walk up to can understand and communicate well with you in English, and mostly people under 50. That said, small efforts to learn useful Spanish phrases for tourists can get you a long way. Points I attest to: Spaniards are good people - It was my first trip to Spain, solo at that, but every person I've met in every Spanish city or town I've been to, was amazingly warm and hospitable. Spaniards appreciate how interested you are about their country and culture and will get out of their way to show you around. It's not difficult to warm up to them. I even got invited to a private party by a local I met the first time. That's how friendly they are. From hotels to bars, I never experienced any local being snotty out of the ordinary. Though I've only been in the Southern part of Spain, so I am not sure if this kind of hospitality is unique to Andalusians.

@woltersworld Im spanish, from Madrid. I liked your video. People around the world think we are faint, we are poor, we are....and you have showed the "world" the reasons why people can live here without having the best economy of the planet. The money isnt the most important thing in life (and, by the way, we have a good universitys, health, and culture "for free"). We have defects, but sometimes we need you to show why people is happy here, and why we have the third biggest heritage of the world and why we are the third most vissited country. We thank you the encouragement that people like you give to us sometimes, becase we need it and (i think), we deserve it.

"for free" means 1200€/year. In comparison with another countries, that is "for free"
@silvichalondon9776

1.200€ (the cheapest ones) in a country with 640€ of minimum wage, it's not free at all. I'm Spanish but I live in England. Obviously English universities are more expensive, but you really can study for free. And you don't have to wait months to the government to tell you if it gives you the money or not. We can say schools and high schools are for free, but universities are not. About the healthy services, they are not for free, you pay for them through your payslip. Which is good actually. Spain has a lot of good things, but we can't lie saying something that isn't totally true. Money isn't everything, but about 200.000 Spanish are in London, for instance. Because they cannot support themselves in Spain.

It depends on where you come from to compare, and it depends on where you wanna go in Spain. Spain, last years, is more expensive than before, if you go to big cities like Madrid,Sevilla,Barcelona or Valencia, or any other turistic areas. Anyway, it also depends on the way you decide to have your holidays, because Spain gives you a large range of things to do (in an economic or an expensive way). As a general rule, it isn´t such a expensive country in comparisson with the UK,Germany... WELLCOME!

I'm a dude from Málaga and I very much agree with almost everything you said. Those were really good points that many tourists don't usually get, which is really sad because many people I've met when living abroad were pretty disappointed with their journey to Spain. The Spanish mindset is focused on being smart, not intelligent; which makes Spanish people prefer to improvise when necessary (but remember, Spain is different, this changes from place to place). My point is that most of the negative traits from us Spaniards come from this fact: If the spoken English needed to attend a tourist is not very high, people don't bother studying it. If the restaurant's earnings are low that month, be smart and cheat on the tourist. If one is desperate and needs money... well, tourists are not the only victims of pickpockets. The last point I want to make is that the Western way of living is different that the Spanish all over. One midday nap, a siesta, would allow you to stay up working until late and avoid working at the hottest hours of the day. This allows many shops to open until late from Monday to Saturday, so most of them close on Sunday (don't worry, almost all restaurants close on Monday). The Spanish clock time doesn't fit it's supposed Time Zone, which should be London +0 GMT instead of Berlin +1 GMT, making us getting up in the morning way before sunrise and have some places see the sunset past 10pm. I hope all this information helps any future tourist to have a more enjoyable trip to Spain. Cheers!

I had a great time in Spain. I'm from Argentina and your description explains why Argentinians are so corrupt, also with the Italian inheritance (both Spanish and Italian immigration during the late 19th and early 20th century), now it makes sense. Anyway, as I said, Spain is great to me

@FishBrothersReturns This has nothing to do with USA. I am just noting that Spain is not strong in its foreign language education and that tourists heading there should learn a bit of Spanish before they go. Whether they are from the US or Germany (the number one country in terms of visitors to our website and youtube site) or wherever. Just warning people they should learn. Thats all.

Question : for a family of 7. Is it easier to rent a vacation home or hotel?
@RadioactiveSand
@RadioactiveSand 8 лет назад
+Haifa Al-Sallami If you go to a big city, I'd say it's better to rent hotel rooms. But if you want to visit a smaller town, more like a "rural experience", definitely go for the vacation home. But you will probably have no problems with any of those options.

Spain does have the best weather in the world though, imo... only it's in the Canary Islands. :P Eternal spring, couldn't be better! I go there every winter for a couple of weeks. And there are some beautiful places too, as long as you don't just stay in the tourist villages. It's been a long time since I visited mainland Spain though , so I really have to do that again some time. It IS really nice! And Spanish really isn't that difficult. Nice video! Viva España!

I'm spanish and I agree with most things you say, but one is clearly not true, shops are not closed at 15:00 due to siesta... are closed at 15:00 because then are opened until 20:30 or 21:00. Most spanish people have lunch at 15:30 and dinner at 22:00.

I'm proud you like our country! An other think you should say is that there are many diffeent languages all over spain (I think 12, theres also a lot of northafrican people. so there's also Arabic languages), in my case, I speak Catalan and Spanish every day:) I live in Tarragona, Catalonia (it's 80 km next to Barcelona) and every time I visit Barcelona is awsome, I think it's the most cosmopolitan city of spain and you never get bored there, there's always something to do :D
