Oh yes....the Swedes speak English amazingly well.......one of the most amazing experiences I ever had was in Halta at an "infant school" where a friend taught 7 year olds... When she explained that I spoke only English....every single 7 yr old in that class room switched from Swedish to impeccable english between one word and the next! I was thunderstruck!
@andnor
@andnor 8 лет назад
+Heather Smedley we had a exchange student from the state in our class. when we all greeted him in English, it looked like he ran into a brick wall xD He was utterly surprised! I find it funny when people from other countries visits our country and does not know that English is as big in Sweden as Swedish xD
@Koodaris
@Koodaris 8 лет назад
+andnor Sorry but what the fuck? I find our english to be highly inferior compared to other countries. As i am studying, there are tons of people who cannot even correctly use grammar in our mother tongue. Mind you i am 18 years old too.
@lisae.4978
@lisae.4978 8 лет назад
+W just take it as a compliment.. I mean, if they think we're good - nice, thank you folks! :) What I've experienced, our English is mostly better than many other non-english speaking countries. I agree that our grammar is lacking etc etc etc. but at least it is better than many other countries. (I've traveled to more than 25 non-english-speaking countries and I'm 18 as well) My theory why you think it that way, might be that you are more familiar with your classmates than a stranger on the streets of Paris and therefore more easily pick up errors your classmates do than the stranger in Paris. Also, that you seldom have advanced conversations with strangers or people from foreign countries. This might just be me, but think about it :)
@Koodaris
@Koodaris 8 лет назад
Lisa E. Well, maybe you do have a point after all since hey, i am not speaking to fully grown adults. Though, some actually cannot even speak, or understand proper sentences of english. Some would not even be able to understand what i am saying right here and now.

Hi. I am a native Swede. I really enjoy watching your video clips and learn how American people see Sweden. I understand and can agree on many of the things you say, even if I see them from the "other side" of the equation. By the way: When you visit Stockholm you just HAVE TO spend one day by taking a trip by boat to some of the islands in the archepelago. The boats usually leave in the morning and you can always get back the same day. And it is pretty cheep. A tour from central Stockholm to Sandhamn (a round trip ticket is about $25) and you will get 4-6 hours at sea with a fantastic view of the archepelago, you spend some hours at the island which is beautiful and then you go back. There are MANY similar trips you can take. (As you may notice I LOVE the archepelago and really feels FREE there).One more thing I have not heard you mention is the "Allemansrätten" wich means "right of public access". You are alowed to go virtually everywhere! Exept from the area NEAR private houses and so, you are alowed to go anywhere you like. You may camp, hike etc. anywhere. There are not many places that are PRIVATE. All this as long as you behave.I hope my comments will help someone who visit Sweden./ Nils

Btw, dont get too close! We are very reserved when it comes to personal space. A swedish guy thats in your face and angry will most likely start trying to kill you within the coming seconds. Compared to for example the french where personal space inst that big of a deal and the same behavior only shows that they are annoyed or angry. That being said, we are generally very friendly and try not to be physical.

The Swedes are among the friendliest people I have ever met. I spent a week in Stockholm this past July and its so easy to strike up a conversation with anyone on the street. I live in France and one of the most annoying things is that their queues just amount to people randomly standing around...some in the queue some just taking up space chatting. You have to just go in and ask people , most of whom are just standing in the bloody way, until you've basically formed the buggers into a queue.

If you need to go to the toilet go to a library or other public institution, they have to let you use the toilet it's the law. And most of them has a few right by the entrance. When i was younger i often went into parliament for that business, it seemed appropriate. Also all of the Government museums are free for the moment (tend to change depending on the government) so you can go into a museum for free and use their toilets.

Generally we don't like lines but they do exist. If there are always long lines at a store for example people would avoid shopping there. Most businesses will do whatever it takes to keep lines at a minimum. With on line banking and shopping now we normally don't have to deal with many lines.
@bengaljam4550
@bengaljam4550 4 года назад
@ivansen I wouldn't call that an everyday occurrence . You know what you are getting yourself into by going to an amusement park like that. There are ways of avoiding those long lines if you play it smart. When my boy was young we chose the middle of October to go to Disney world. Most kids are in school. Never waited over 10 minutes for any ride.

That's why alcohol isn't available everywhere. To reduce the number of alcoholics. And I think that it's good!

I know everyone is saying that Sweden is not safe anymore, c'mon. It's still a pretty safe country to live in but we do have a lot of weird people who is frekkin psychos. I love living here, and I obviously don't live in a city. The best thing about Sweden: You can drink the water from the tap (in the sink) everywhere and it tastes like Fiji-water (believe me, i tried it). So you don't need to buy water at the stores and thats also why we don't have a lot of huge water bottles for sale ;)

I never realized we had comparatively few public bathrooms - when you live here you just get into the habit of strategically using the bathroom before going out and whenever one is available at restaurants and such. A couple of years ago I went to Stockholm with some relatives and we started using the expression "strategic peeing" which basically meant that whenever we were out and there was a bathroom available, everyone in the group used it whether they felt the need to or not, because you never knew when you might find another one.

The rape capital thing that's going around is ridiculous. A lot of crimes that are considered rape here, are defined as sexual assault in other countries, as were they in Sweden before 2005. The sexual crime rates haven't increased, it's just that we call more of them rape now than we did before. Not to mention that a total of 63 countries don't submit any statistics, including South Africa, where a survey three years ago showed that one in four men questioned admitted to rape. If Not to mention that a total of 63 countries don't submit any statistics, includingglobal murder-rate figures are problematic, rape-rate figures appear to be almost worthless. Consider, for example, the Index Mundi rape-rate map, which indicates that Sweden and New Zealand have some of the highest levels of rape in the world, and that Egypt has one of the lowest. Although the map comes with a disclaimer,* it is hardly adequate. Could anyone possibly believe that Sweden has a higher rape rate than Egypt? Egypt is currently suffering a rape epidemic so severe that it is becoming a diplomatic issue. Sweden, meanwhile, consistently rates as one of the most gender egalitarian, nonviolent countries in the world. Willingness to report crime also affects the statistics. In countries where rape remains associated with a strong taboo and a high level of shame, the propensity to report such offences probably tends to be lower than in countries characterized by a higher level of sexual equality. A police force and judicial system enjoining a high level of confidence and a good reputation with the public will produce a higher propensity to report crime than a police force which is discredited, inspires fear or distrust. The findings of the 2000 International Crime Victims Survey (ICVS) indicate that the respondents' satisfaction with the police is above average in Sweden, with almost no experience of corruption. Sweden has also been ranked number one in sexual equality. Different story in the United Kingdom: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01qclj0 A woman is raped every ten minutes in the UK and yet thousands of rapes go unreported and conviction rates remain low. Pips Taylor explores why in powerful interviews with young rape survivors. She confronts those in authority about the failures in the system and speaks to young men about their views of the crime. Ultimately Pips asks who is really to blame for rape? Unreported cases a comparison between Sweden and the United Kingdom, not to mention the most backward countries in the world. It is likely that only around 20 per cent of all rapes are being reported, which was confirmed in a study of the extent of violence against women, funded by the Government of Sweden and the Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority. This can be compared to a British Government report, estimating that between 75 and 95 percent of rapes are not reported in the United Kingdom. Another example: Which two countries are the kidnapping capitals of the world? Australia and Canada. Official figures from the United Nations show that there were 17 kidnaps per 100,000 people in Australia in 2010 and 12.7 in Canada. That compares with only 0.6 in Colombia and 1.1 in Mexico. So why haven't we heard any of these horror stories? Are people being grabbed off the street in Sydney and Toronto, while the world turns a blind eye? No, the high numbers of kidnapping cases in these two countries are explained by the fact that parental disputes over child custody are included in the figures. If one parent takes a child for the weekend, and the other parent objects and calls the police, the incident will be recorded as a kidnapping, according to Enrico Bisogno, a statistician with the United Nations. Comparing crime rates across countries is fraught with difficulties - this is well known among criminologists and statisticians, less so among journalists and commentators. The Ten Worst Countries for Women Today: 1. Afghanistan: The average Afghan girl will live to only 45 - one year less than an Afghan male. After three decades of war and religion-based repression, an overwhelming number of women are illiterate. More than half of all brides are under 16, and one woman dies in childbirth every half hour. Domestic violence is so common that 87 per cent of women admit to experiencing it. But more than one million widows are on the streets, often forced into prostitution. Afghanistan is the only country in which the female suicide rate is higher than that of males. 2. Democratic Republic of Congo: In the eastern DRC, a war that claimed more than 3 million lives has ignited again, with women on the front line. Rapes are so brutal and systematic that UN investigators have called them unprecedented. Many victims die; others are infected with HIV and left to look after children alone. Foraging for food and water exposes women to yet more violence. Without money, transport or connections, they have no way of escape. 3. Iraq: The U.S.-led invasion to "liberate" Iraq from Saddam Hussein has imprisoned women in an inferno of sectarian violence that targets women and girls. The literacy rate, once the highest in the Arab world, is now among the lowest as families fear risking kidnapping and rape by sending girls to school. Women who once went out to work stay home. Meanwhile, more than 1 million women have been displaced from their homes, and millions more are unable to earn enough to eat. 4. Nepal: Early marriage and childbirth exhaust the country's malnourished women, and one in 24 will die in pregnancy or childbirth. Daughters who aren't married off may be sold to traffickers before they reach their teens. Widows face extreme abuse and discrimination if they're labelled bokshi, meaning witches. A low-level civil war between government and Maoist rebels has forced rural women into guerrilla groups. 5. Sudan: While Sudanese women have made strides under reformed laws, the plight of those in Darfur, in western Sudan, has worsened. Abduction, rape or forced displacement have destroyed more than 1 million women's lives since 2003. The janjaweed militias have used systematic rape as a demographic weapon, but access to justice is almost impossible for the female victims of violence. 6. Guatemala: The impoverished female underclass of Guatemala faces domestic violence, rape and the second-highest rate of HIV/AIDS after sub-Saharan Africa. An epidemic of gruesome unsolved murders has left hundreds of women dead, some of their bodies left with hate messages. 7. Mali: One of the world's poorest countries, few women escape the torture of genital mutilation, many are forced into early marriages, andone in 10 dies in pregnancy or childbirth. 8. Pakistan: In the tribal border areas of Pakistan women are gang-raped as punishment for men's crimes. But honour killing is more widespread, and a renewed wave of religious extremism is targeting female politicians, human rights workers and lawyers. 9. Saudi Arabia: Women in Saudi Arabia are treated as lifelong dependents, under the guardianship of a male relative. Deprived of the right to drive a car or mix with men publicly, they are confined to strictly segregated lives on pain of severe punishment. 10. Somalia: In the Somali capital, Mogadishu, a vicious civil war has put women, who were the traditional mainstay of the family, under attack. In a society that has broken down, women are exposed daily to rape, dangerously poor health care for pregnancy, and attack by armed gangs. The ten best and safest countries for women. Measures of well-being include life expectancy, education, purchasing power and standard of living. Not surprisingly, the top 10 countries are among the world's wealthiest: 1. Iceland 2. Norway 3. Australia 4. Canada 5. Ireland 6. Sweden 7. Switzerland 8. Japan 9. Netherlands 10. France

I called it about three times and was so very impressed by the friendliness of the person I was speaking with (one woman had a bit of wine before speaking with me but she was funny and nice). I love that the comments on basically every video you post about Sweden are mainly swedes. Either we are very proud of our country and click on every video about it that we see, or we are so stuck up on being politically correct that we are forced to shout our proudness in the comment section on RU-vid. Either way, I do have to say that your videos are quite accurate, atleast for an Americans point of view. They will surely help anyone thinking about visiting Sweden! I also agree with you about our public bathrooms. Most of the places are either 5 SEK or 10 SEK, which is way too expensive for a basic need. Luckily most restaurants and shops are quite generous with their bathrooms even if you're not a guest, if you ask, so usually you can get away with it. You should, however, try to visit more of the Southern parts of Sweden, aswell as the northern parts of Sweden, seeing as Swedens nature shifts quite significantly depending on where you are, and the entire length of Sweden have great sights to visit (even though I absolutely agree that the capital and Gothenburg are the easiest and most comfortable places to visit). But, in light of what I just suggested I am going to suggest you visit my favorite city in Sweden, Varberg. A city that is quite literally a vacation city, a very beautiful one at that. It's located in Halland and are fairly close to Gothenburg. All of Halland offers incredible scenery, beautiful rivers, deep forests and all along the length of it you have beautiful beaches. Not to mention the many fantastic cities to visit and the fact that there are a lot of tourist attractions to see. Anyway, thank you for your videos, keep it up! Tourists are always welcome! ;)

Well I live in Sweden and the best thing is that we are smart enough to dont close the public toilet door fully so the next person dont need to pay anything, thats mostly in like.. malls and stuff, if its outdoors and you are standing in line to the toilet they will hold the door for you when they are done. And its hard to learn to know some of us because we dont trust that many I understand it like and thats why we are so quiet. And what I hate about Sweden are all the mosquitoes, they are everywhere in the summer and its a lot of small swamps in some parts of Sweden there they come from.

Americans don’t generally eat spicy food. Not sure where you got that from. There are two small pockets of food in the u.s. that like spicy food, those would be Cajun in Louisiana, and Mexican food in New Mexico.
@notthegoatseguy
@notthegoatseguy 6 лет назад
While there are certainly cuisines in the US that have spice (some BBQ and other sauces, some Mexican and Cajun food), I wouldn't say that American cuisine is defined by spice. I'd go so far to say that most Americans don't really enjoy spice, and that even food that is traditionally spicy like some Sichuan and Thai food is usually is toned down in the US.
