I served in Germany during the Cold War, when we used to patrol the Inner German Border that ran through the Harz. The Russians and East Germans had a major communications base on top of the Brocken, from which they eavesdropped on all the NATO activities in the West. Of course, we couldn't visit Wernigrode but we frequently took ski trips to the western Harz during the winter. One of the popular ski runs near Braunlage, on the Wurmberg, used to end against the border fence.

My Grandfather grew up in Bremen and he said his family would take the train either to the coast or to the Harz mountains on family vacations as a kid but my god when I think of Germany I think of those little towns in the mountains so gorgeous

Am I the only (german) who hears "Vinegar Ode" when Mark says Wernigerode? 😊😁 I know, the cumulation of syllables in german is difficult, but in this case it's Wernige-rode, because that suffix indicates a village that was build on an uprooted/cleared terrain, where once were woods (just like roda, -rade, -rath, -reuth). 😉 But nevertheless... once again a very good and detailed video, you're a great ambassador of german culture and regions. Love your passion for our country. 👍

I try to watch ALL of your videos of Germany. You speak the language so well. While I was in Germany during the ending of the cold war, (I was assigned to 3rd Infantry Division in a tank unit "tanker") my gunner spoke extremely fluent German, and Chech. He married a Chech.

After watching this when it first came out in December, I am finally here. And this weekend Quedlinburg is celebrating its 1100th anniversary of founding. What a festival. We are staying in Wernigerode like you suggested. Only heard English spoken twice in three days, but we Canadians are managing just fine.

Too cute to pass up. Based on your videos adding Quedlinburg (and Bamberg) to our trip next fall (wrapping all in with going to the Passionsspiele in Oberammergau). Planning on a week in each of the two following the play. Thanks for showing us the less known places.

Beside the steam train, we didn't see any of those places on our past visit to the Harz :D This place is quiet big and there are many things to do and visit around the Harz mountains :) I just posted my video of our visit which includes Roßtrappe , the Titan Hängebrücke, Drei Annen Hohne and the Bismarckturm on top of the mountain. We did all these in 24 hours, so it was quiet a rush but had an amazing time there! Recommend anyone to visit this area and take a look at what we did on those places if you are also interested ;) viele grüße!

Great video, looks really lovely there. I'd never heard of those towns/region, but I want to go now. Jealous too as it's Christmas Day and hot here in Australia. I'm from England and I must admit I never got used to or like it being hot at Christmas. Give me the cold & ideally snow at Xmas time. Regardless, always loving your content and I hope you all have a pleasant Xmas.

If you are interested in the German automotive industry, you should definitely visit Wolfsburg, which is near Brunswick and only an hour away from the Harz mountains. It is one of the richest cities in Germany because the Volkswagen headquarters are located there and it is famous for its modern architecture and many museums.

Being a somewhat larger gentleman myself this video reinforces why I practically NEVER did the Japanese tourist thing. That is plant themselves squarely covering all that beauty that you've just spent so much money getting there to see! The voice-over is interesting and informative but would have been more effective if delivered from mainly behind the camera rather than in front. For folks planning a trip to Germany (when/if the current troubles subside!) the Harz Mountains and their ancient towns are well worth the effort to get to see them.

@petereggers7603
@petereggers7603 3 года назад
There is such thing as a "Deutsche Fachwerkstraße" (German Timber Frame Road)... An over 2000 kilometer long touristic road through nearly all parts (states & citys) of Germany that are known for their half-timbered houses. Check out their website in english... www.deutsche-fachwerkstrasse.de/en/Homepage.html For constructional and historic details go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timber_framing?wprov=sfla1 There are roughly 3 types of different styles, due to regional aspects: - northern/central/eastern Germany - western/central Germany & Franconia - southern Germany (Baden-Wuerttemberg & Bayern)
