I agree. I keep on hearing people say that one should visit Krakow over Warsaw. I totally disagree. Warsaw has so much to see and do and the prices are totally affordable.
@@frenchfan3368 Agreed. Warsaw is a fabulous city which I hold with great affection. My other weakness is Antibes and Monte Carlo. Beautiful coastal areas especially outside tourist season when it's quieter. Enjoy your day.
@@AndrewKNI Warsaw is "meh" compared to other cities. I also think Kraków is a bit overrated. Too tourist-ey. Try Poznań, Gdańsk, Wrocław out of the bigger cities or some of the smaller ones in the south. Rzeszów is a fine city by itself but it's a great base for visiting Tarnów, Przemyśl, Sanok, Zamość, Lwów (right behind the Ukrainian border), Solina lake, Bieszczady Mountains and so on.

I have been going to Warsaw about twice a year for almost 20 years. I have never had any issues with crime- at all. It is a big city, so exercise common sense, but it is really pretty safe. It is gray- especially in the winter months. But Warsaw (and Poland in general) is a wonderful place, with terrific people, great things to see in the cities and also the countryside. I love the food and it is friendly.
thats what i like about warsaw, go out of season and you feel you get the whole place to yourself. except the busy junctions of rondo onz, centrum, rondo dasynskiego. couldnt believe how empty the metro system is.
Because there is SO much more to see in Prague than in Warsaw (I've been in former and live in latter so I know). Prague is full of Gothic and baroque architecture since it was one of biggest cities of German Empire.
Just back from 9 days in Warsaw - Out til gone 11pm at night, NOT 1 problem, in the pubs and restaurants staff were great, friendly, eager to help. Walking around all over, felt Safe
@@27moniczek81 it's really not. In a right context, any sound Pole will understand "prosim" as "proszę". The only word it could be technically mistaken for is "prosię" (a piglet), but the chance of someone misunderstanding "dwa piwa prosim" ("two beers X") as "two beers piglet" is abysmally low. You would truly have to be an idiot. I am Polish myself, and have used that several times in my life just for fun without any issues.
@@Bards.98 Go visit Poland. It's beautiful, but living there? IDK about that, maybe for a few months, tops. Or if you had a job based out of the States, where you get paid in US dollars. Otherwise, too expensive on Polish salary. That's why you see tons of tourists, especially English speaking. The British pound and the US dollar are strong currencies and you get to buy a lot, so it seems cheap to us tourists. You don't see many cars on the roads or highways as other countries. One US gallon of gas (3.78 liters) is about $6.50-$7 a gallon, equivalent. On weekends, it's pretty quiet, even in major cities on the roads as people walk and bike a lot. Public transit is cheaper than owning a vehicle. In Warsaw, there's practically no free parking, like most Polish cities, everywhere you go you must pay parking and parking is limited. If you ever go and fly into Warsaw Chopin Airport. There's no parking permitted anywhere outside, only for taxis. You have to go across the street to the parking garage. It's so tight in there, good luck squeezing a vehicle (rental car) out of there. PITA! But it is a beautiful country to visit. People are very friendly and food is delicious (cheap).

When you are at the bus/train station areas, there may be some beggers asking for change/cigarets, but they are not dangerous and saying it's not safe or there are pickpockets in the public transport... I wouldn't agree. I haven't heard about someone, who lost his money, unless it was a night bus, the person was totally drunk and even then I know maybe 1-2 cases (maybe it wasn't even "pickpocketing", but simply the wallet has been dropped by the drunk owner).
@@gambinogambinos2439 You don`t "need to" it`s just nice if you do. And as far as I know no slavic land uses polish words. In whole Europe you will not find a country that uses/understands the word "dziękuję". I always try to use/learn few words in the language of the country I visit ( even the slavic ones ;))
@@anneirving I agree with you, we have so many different words, but we also have so many same or similar words. But also so many words have same old-slavic roots. BTW we Balkan slavic people are less slavic origin than polish people. Polish people have similar dnk halpgroups with Russians, Ukrainians, Belaruss, Slovakians, Czech etc. We Serbs and Croats are mix of balkan natives ethnic groups and slavic forefathers who came here in 7th century.

I made that mistake in Serbia ( my bad) I didn`t check and was shocked when a cashier said "хвала" (hvala) after I paid for my shopping ( and we do have word that sounds the same in polish but it means praise or glory not "thank you"). And I`m sure I looked like an idiot when I looked at her thinking " what is she praising me for". I got my lesson and i look up most used words even in countries that should have similar language :)
@@anneirving Yes, but serbian and croatian language are totally same, with little number of different words, basicly we are language base for some new nations here, and their new fake languages like bosnian and montenegrian language. Bosnia is fake nation, like Yugoslovenians or Soviets, but EU still support that creation against serbian and croatian will for freedom. Montenegrians are serbian geographical identity who became national identity. Macedonians are mix of Serbian and Bulgarians. Хвала (hvala) is serbo-croatian word (maybe greek word), but we pushed the old-slavic word благодарим (blagodarim), but some slavic people here still use that word. Its so funny when some slavic words exist in different slavic language but have totally different meaning, like that hvala (glory). :) I didn't visit Poland yet, but i was there in Prague, Bratislava and Moscow. My plan is route like Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk + Kaliningrad.
I would not agree with one of your points. There is no problem with pickpockets in Warsaw, and it is safer around the train station than in most Westen European cities... I would never think twice about letting my camera lie on an outdoor cafe table in Warsaw, but I would probably not do that in a big Italian city
Great to see foreigner's perspective on my home city :) Just two things I might want to add. First is, if you love parks, there a quite a lot of them in Warsaw and a lot of trees in general. Second is I want to emphesize that Warsaw is perceived by many as a safe place because it really is. Crime statistics show it as one of the safest cities in Europe.
I understand thinking the city is spread out dealing with kids but to me everything was quite compact and walkable. I stayed at the Marriott near central station. To the west, the Uprising Museum was a 30 minute walk. To the east, the river was 30 minutes. To the north, Old Town was less than 30 minutes. To the south, Belvedere Palace was, yup, 30 minutes. And of course all the museums, parks, squares, markets, restos, etc. were within that radius with the single exception being Wilanow Palace. Just don't base in Old Town and Warsaw is super easy to walk. 👍 And yes, Stalin's "gift" to Warsaw is drab by day but really quite beautiful at night.
i first went to warsaw october 2017, went out early the next morning, it was cold, dull and grey and the sight of stalins gift was a real surprise, it stood out, looking over the whole city. went back last summer, it was busier, more people around, bars open etc, i didnt get to see much of the south, or the praga district, but seen plenty of powisle, old town, vistula and central areas. the city is quite compact but its good to use the transport system, trams, buses and metro are quite cheap.
One thing that will annoy you in Warsaw is how every few blocks you need to cross an enormous four- or six-lane highway. Crossing the road in Warsaw is a lot like playing chess. The buses are the rooks, generally going along the nearside; the trams are the bishops, squeezing through the gaps in the middle; the knights are the cars that every now & then stop traffic because they need to turn right; & you're the king, because the objective is to keep you alive.
I will be 9 days in may in warsaw. The things he discribed as eventually issue you have in each big city. So no big deal. I am looking forward to my stay.

Came to Warsaw in may of 23 to meet my fiance. My first time international and I loved Poland. I think customs differ which make people post negative comments. Was out until midnight and walked back to the hotel about 15 minute walk. Felt very safe. Also very affordable on the American dollar. Only negative is it seems like a limited amount to do unless you are into museums and parks. But Poland will always hold a part of my heart forever.
To just clarify pickpocketing begging are not done by Polish people. They are mostly Roma people from Rumania ,Hungary and other foreigners. They are many wonderful Roma artist performing on the streets in the Polish cities.You will enjoy great musicians .

yeah i once seen two foreigners whod idn't even speak polish get encountered by one who checked thier ticket and since noone told them to do it they didn't do it like he didn;t even speak english he shouted at the :"The ticket jest nie skasowany!!!!!"

I have never seen an excess of beggars in the Centrum station or the train station. It’s common sense to be careful late at night or early in the morning. I live in Philly, and compared to here, it’s much safer in Warsaw at any time.
I would also recommend seeing beautiful Lazienki Park with RoyalPalace and Chopin's sculpture. During the warmer months of the year there are free outdoor concerts of Chopin's musinc in front of his monument. Also visiting another beautiful Royal Palace and gardens in Willanow is well worth it - you can take a city bus to go there.
I just moved here to Warsaw from California and I’ve not seen any crimes or heard of any. It’s very safe. I walk around late at night drunk looking for late nite food spots everybody is friendly. I will say the service norm is no smiling lol. They’re just at work, who likes that??
Yes, service is not the best but the reason for that is very simple. Pay is ridiculously low, they have to deal with rude customers (it is not uncommon for polish customers to skip on "good day" "thank you" and "please" or complain about prices) and there's often not enough employees so they have to work extra hard to get things done smoothly. We're not grumpy cause we don't like people, but because of our working conditions. I'm speaking from my own experience.
The rebuild story was an incredible feat! The entire country came together to rebuild their Capital! There was no Marshall Plan for the abandoned Ally, and Yes Poland is the most loyal Ally!

The old town is looking almost the same as it used to before WW2. Workers were based on documents, paintings and the same technology and materials . The most difficult thing was reconstruction of the royal castle which was completely devastated.
1 Sorry, but I don‘t agree that Warsaw has some particularly big safety issues. I lived there for 35 years and was never robbed. In London I lost my camera on day one. So I guess in every big city one have to watch out. 2 Show me a city that doesn’t look grey in winter.
honestly, pickpocketing is not even that big in Warsaw. Don't think of Barcelona level. I feel much safer here than in my home town Budapest... There you will get pickpocketed for sure.

If you want to visit warsaw I really recommend you to do it by foot. You'll see much more between the toursutic points plus the city is very good for walking in my opinion and the distances not that big.

Very nice summary. You mentioned that we like to hear a few words in polish from tourist. It's true, but I would put it more general: we like to see any sincere sign of respect or appreciation (and learning 2 or 3 words in our language is an example of such kind effort). If You would like to shine, learn one or two things about our golden age in history: something about being a fighting nation (key word: winged hussar, the best cavalry that ever existed), once a local great power, with a spec of romantic/heroic moments. It's maybe cheap, but we like to hear such words of recognition, maybe because we are still having some complexes.

For some 10 years I have never heard of someone robbing someone in Warsaw, the person talking about Warsaw describes it as if through the prism of the 90s when it was not many years after the change of the system from communism to capitalist and many people did not have a job then and in fact there were thefts, but it has long been obsolete. Warsaw is a rich city of presence and one of the safest in the world. The describing person knows Warsaw from the old days and uses a bit of an outdated description from old memories. Warsaw is going through a lot of change now, I used to dislike Warsaw myself as a Varsovian, now I love this city for how it changes in a positive way. After two years of absence, you can even see huge differences. A lot of futuristic skyscrapers are being built, there is a lot of renovation works turning ugly Warsaw into a beautiful capital of our country.
I was in Warsaw during the holidays in May. It was amazing! The main road in the centre was free of traffic and there were shows in the multi media fountain park every evening and a lot of other street performers everywhere. People were out untill late, even with children. The vibe was just so good. I didn't see any drunk people and felt very safe all the time. I really recommend going to Warsaw in the first week of May. One of my favourite city trips so far :)
Btw: I went to the National Museum and the entrance only costed 1 zloty. Yes, 1 zloty (about 24 eurocents). I thought I misheared the cashier, but it was really true :)

But the caustion videos in public transport are telling about it all the time to be aware of it. Check also the list of top pick pocketing cities in the world. And here the top 10: Barcelona, Spain. @@Bards.98 It depends on what country you come from. If from Germany then it is almost free. If from Ukraine you have to work for half a year. The rental of a flat starts from about 250Eur per month in a bad place and a normal good quality flat is about 450eur. If it comes to prices there are good websites with price comparisons from all around the world.
Warsaw has TK Max.... not a big deal, unless you are an American living in Europe and missing your favorite store TJ Maxx... it was a pleasant site to see!
Have lived in Warsaw now for almost 4 years. Never ever ever had a problem with pickpockets or any other type of crime and I'm a female who walks alone at night and I live quite close to the city centre. It's ridiculously safe here, especially compared to the US or other European countries (statistics support that, btw). The "gray" colours are pretty much old buildings that need a simple renovation. Most of Warsaw is quite colourful. My main complaint is the complaining :) of Polish people and yes, the not so friendly customer service in many places. Younger generations are super friendly and cheerful though, the frowny attitude is definitely a communist leftover. (by the way, not all the buildings in the Old Town had been levelled by the German Army (not the "Natzis" :) but most..)
I am really suprised honestly, i personally never felt unsafe on train stations(propably because im local) nor i get pickpoceted. My only expirience with drunk people on public transport was in night train from Katowice to Szczecin, when some guys get on somewhere in the middle of the track, but they were super friendly and i spend rest of night playng cards with them
You should visit Trójmiasto. It's 3 cities: Gdynia, Gdańsk and Sopot and the cool thing is how different they are being so close and working together :)
Men! I live in Warshaw and I probably would be very surprised if I will see you in a public transport on my way to the city center. It's like, you're watching someone on Tv or RU-vid and then you actually see them in real life. xd
Me- born and raised in Warsaw, never been robben anywhere in Poland. I think much more issue with that is in Rome or Napoli, even my father-in-law, who is from Poland as well, but lives in Rome about 25 years was warning us-Poles about pickpockets in Rome, and it was quite accurate as someone has stolen my husband's wallet while we were there. We have much more issue with drunk people or homeless people- espacially in the city center area. However in my opinion the same amount of them you can see in Prague for example.
