Today I stopped in the historic Myrtle Beach Speedway to check out what remains of the once popular half mile short track! A very sad sight and I hope this serves as a harsh reminder that we must give back to our local tracks so that they function long into the future!

Thanks for this Landon! I hate seeing the demise of these historic speedways. Just shows the importance of supporting out local tracks. Glad I was able to see a LM race at MB Speedway in the early 90's. Great job on the video.

Thanks for sharing dude. I know exactly how you feel. We lost our local track in 1987. It was called Catamount Stadium in Milton, Vt. We all grew up there every Saturday night watching all the boys going at it. It's now a industrial park but, you can still see where the track was. Catamount was the best and, always will be in my mind

I remember the race that Elton Sawyer won at Myrtle Beach several years ago. Was an Elton Sawyer fan and was so glad when he finally broke through. So sad to see the end of an era. The same thing happened to New Asheville Speedway in Asheville, but thankfully not as devastating due to the fact that they built a nice park there down by the river that at least gives recognition to the history of the racing there. It's hard to be philosophical as you see this happen, but right, wrong or indifferent, time moves on and change is inevitable. Enjoy your coverage. Thanks

Thank you for the tour of Myrtle beach speedway. Like you said it’s devastating to see tracks go away. In 2004 we raced are local track, bought tires for the following week from the track only to find out on Wednesday of that week the track was closed. It had a long time history with big name drivers that had raced there and was my family’s life for many years. It just recently became a storage lot now after all these years but housing development complaints of noise was really what put it under. We went south about a hour to race St Augustine speedway only to have it close a couple of years later and still sits as it was closed. Long rant but it’s sad to see. Thank again

I visited back in August of last year and they still had the pavement and light towers down. It's sad to see this track go. This is definitely one of the biggest loses in the short track racing community. I would die to have the opportunity to race there. May she rest easy

Unfortunately the local dirt track I raced at and grew up going to suffered a similar fate. I am from Northern Michigan and a family from the city moved close to the track and thought it was too loud on Friday nights. The day the track went up for sale, they offered triple the value for the property. Almost 10 years later and it still just sits there. They only took down the grandstands. The track is still there, clay and all

This kinda stuff is so interesting to me. Don't miss an episode of lost speewdways. For us up north its more drag strips than speedways. We did have Mansfield Speedway and they did a kickass job on it when the revamped it back in the early 2000's. Hell the truck series was there for 4 years and now it's shares the same fate as Myrtle Beach. I'm not sure if your dad drove there in 05 or not. Thanks for sharing!

One of my dad's friends was the last general manager there at the track, Bill Hennecy. Bill ran quite a few Dash races in the 80's and early 90's and is still running Spec Miata in SCCA. He was interviewed on the episode of Lost Speedways about MB Speedway. Spent a lot of Saturday nights there as a kid in the late 70's and early 80's. Sad to see it gone.

I grew up in Charleston SC in a racing family. My hometown track was Summerville speedway. Ran super stocks, late models and late model stocks there with my brother. The track was torn down and there are now town homes where it once stood. I started going to Myrtle Beach speedway after as part of Robert Powells crew. Side note his father owned Summerville and Florence speedway which is the only track left from my roots. I fell in love with MB and I was completely heartbroken when I found our that it was to be torn down! We are loosing so much history and fabric of our racing lives seeing these places dissappear.

Thanks for another look at the old track. I hate seeing the old tracks fall to whatever the hell is happening. This has been going on for many years but it still hurts to see it. I have a track about 2 miles from my house that closed in the late 60s and a lot of it is still there. Dale Jr did a look at it on his show as well. It's in Augusta, GA. I hope to see you again in Hickory this weekend.

Thats a sad sight to see. We used to go there MB400 weekend and run a mini stock years ago. I know how abrasive the track is because then mini stocks ran the racetrack recaps and they would fly apart and tear the fenders and crush panels up. Was always a great time and racecars and trucks were pitted inside and outside the track. Lots of good memories at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Thanks for the video.

Very sad! I remember going there with my mom and dad growing up. Been there to watch all kinds of racing. Watched your dad there plenty of times even got his hero cards. Liked getting those free samples of White House apple juice and apple sauce. I even was on a late models stock pit crew there back in 06 for the 400. Last time I went was in 2010 for the 400. Lost a camera and money that day. Watched plenty of Nascar stars there. Met Jeff Gordon his first year in what was the Busch series back then. I'm from Summerville which Summerville speedway was my home track. Miss that place as well. Thinks for the video of Myrtle Beach Speedway. It is missed by Ton's of racers and fans.

When I was a little fellow I saw The Flintstone Flyer lap the whole field. No body could touch him. I saw Robert Powell race in a Buch race with Rob Moroso sad he got killed. I worked at Regency Pontiac Olds and GMC they had an All Pro car Bobby Hamilton drove in one race there. I seen it dirt and asphalt... I have many memories. Oh my dad flagged a few races when Charlie Powell had Myrtle Beach at one time. Never had the opportunity to race there. But I'm good with the memories.

Sad to see myrtle beach speedway demise . I worked as a fire guard back in the 70 while stationed in USAF at MB Afb. I met many of the NASCAR drivers who would come down from Darlington when they were running a NASCAR RACE at Darlington . Some moments I remember is when Darrell Waltrip came to the track and was being introduced to the drivers. This was before he was racing in the Grand National. Great racers Sam summers,Harold Fountain,Sam Ard, Howard Goodson,Butch Linldley,L.D. Ottinger late model drivers. NASCAR Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough,David Pearson , Richard Petty . I am originally from Valdese N. C. and grew up going to Hickory and Tri- county.love your videos

It's a shame development overcame the track. I started going to the track back in the early 70s and if I remember correctly wasn't it asphalt then dirt then back to asphalt? I remember seeing guys like Butch Lindley run LMS there and I also remember hearing the cars running there while I was shopping at Tanger across the street. There's nothing like hearing a late model race car turn laps from a distance, it always gave me chills.

Gresham was supposed to open back up and then COVID hit and now the track property has been sold to a buyer who won't keep the track. Sucks even more now that I'm older, have a career and can afford getting in to racing. Guess I'll just stick to iRacing and convince myself to get a dirt car to run at Winder.

Thank you for documenting the remnants of the track. A piece of history soon to be lost. Nice work, much appreciated.

It’s the same with NHRA drag racing tracks. Popular tracks like Atlanta Dragway, Englishtown in NJ, Houston Raceway Park, Bandimere in Colorado, National Trail in Columbus , Ohio, Memphis Dragway, Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Ks, just to name a few. Because of NHRA’s poor management resulting in increased lack of interest in the sport, it’s more profitable to sell to investors that build housing, retail properties and commercial real estate. Anyone who has watched stock cars or drag racing over the years knows that these sports were built on the shoulders of the common man with common interests who would race at the drop of a hat for FREE! Now they show drag racing on tv, for example, the top contenders with the most money invested, this being the nitro fuel cars and pro stock cars and bikes ONLY! We all know those classes are just a small part of a race event, the majority being stock, super stock and comp eliminator with many more race vehicles. The ‘little man’ who actually started the business has been pushed to the side because of SIMPLE GREED of the corporate world, and this is what’s left. Closed race tracks resulting in miles of housing, retail spaces or empty fields. It was nice while it lasted. Thanks for the memories…

Back in 2014 I went to Myrtle Beach for Vacation and passed by the track. I should have caught a race while I was there. Sad to see the track gone.

I got to see many races at MBS over the years and drove the "racing experience" there four years ago. I made the same walk last year that you have made this video from. It feels like WE have lost an old friend......sad!!

Would love to snag that piece of asphalt! Maybe the development plans will never happen and they will turn it back into a dirt track. Gotta get jr on board to possibly purchase the track, but it might be too far gone now.

I’d say it is too far gone. There isn’t anything left as you can see in the video unfortunately. But as long as it isn’t sold, there is a small sliver of hope

Drove on this track as a part of a NASCAR driving experience back in the early 2000s when we were on vacation there. Shame this happened to the track.

Hate to see that to historic racetracks I know that here in Louisville when torn down Louisville MotorSpeedway and the dirt track we had in Bardstown Ky that it took away those Saturday night races that looked forward to every racing season.

Sad to see. Everyone definitely needs to go to their local track and support. We cant keep letting this happen. I grew up in Miami with Hialeah Speedway and the same thing happened. Definitely interested in that piece of asphalt. 👍

Hey Landon, it seemed a shame to tear down the track if the owner had no firm buyer for the land, I doubt he was losing any $ on weekly races. Now he's stuck paying taxes on the land till he sells it, one reason he had every thing torn down to save for paying for structures on the tax bill till until he sold it but he's still paying taxes regardless & the track isn't making him anything now.

I think he had a buyer originally and they all backed out, so now it sits like it does

As an Australian I’d never get a chance to go to murtle beach or what’s left, I jumped onto apple maps on my phone and put it in satellite view and I haven’t updated it for so long that it shows the track still there. Unfortunately I could see all of the new housing developments right next door that led to the tracks demise too 😔

I always wanted to go to Myrtle Beach Speedway! Unfortunately I never made it before it was torn out. I loved this track and the racing it provided, and was crushed when I heard it was going to be destroyed.
