In June it was announced that Myrtle Beach Speedway would host its last race ever in mid August, so me and my buddy Evan packed up our stuff and headed to the beach to see the historic track in action one last time. A track mostly known for being part of the ladder system in NASCAR, Myrtle Beach has actually hosted a number of Cup series races, and drivers from Ned Jarrett to Dale Earnhardt Jr and Joey Logano to Ryan Vargas had to come out here to prove they belonged in top series ride. A 101 lap feature was planned for the last show, and an apprehensive tension loomed in the pits all day until the green flag flew. Here's how it all went down, how the track came to be, and why it's going away.
Filmed by Evan Tripp. Check him out here:

The Myrtle Beach Speedway was a great place to go when I was vacationing there. In the Spring of 2019 I drove at the Richard Petty Experience there. Thank you for taking the time to be there on the speedway’s last night and documenting the event the way only you can do. 5 stars LOL.

@svbguy
@svbguy 3 года назад
Worst thing is that this is happening all across America. People move in near the tracks and then complain about the track's noise. The track owners change things up to appease them. Then they lose fans cause of the changes in times that they are running or dates having to be changed. So that puts so many tracks into a tailspin that they are unable to get out of til they sell off to some developer to be made into Condo's or a Business Park that is half empty.
@MadMike32
@MadMike32 3 года назад
Not even necessarily that. Real estate developers will buy up land around the track for cheap, bitch at city council over noise, and then watch the property value skyrocket when the track gets inevitable castrated or shutdown. And the tracks are helpless to do anything about it.
@BlueOvals24
@BlueOvals24 3 года назад
That is so stupid. You moved next to a track, live with the noise or move back out. I get why people would complain if the track was built next to a development, but the other way around, that's stupid. Literally putting people out of business just to build homes that could be built anywhere else.

They've tried to do the same thing at Laguna Seca and Brand's Hatch, luckily those tracks have been able to survive thanks to how legendary they are and how deep their owners pockets are. People should know what they're in for if they're moving close to a fucking race track. That's on them. Tsukuba just put up highway sound barriers and told everyone else to kindly "ファックオフ"

Yeah, it honestly sucks. NHMS (New Hampshire Motor Speedway) last year announced that there would be a country music festival there at some point, and people who live near the track went to court about it because of some BS and probably they were thinking about the noise issues too (FYI, NHMS won). Like, if you don't like the noise, don't live near a fucking race track.

Same shit is happening right now to Tor Poznan, the only FIA-graded polish race track (if you play rFactor2 or Assetto Corsa, you may have heard about it). When they build it in 1977, it was on an army operated parts of Lawica Airport, there were almost no inhabitants around. But, as city grew, it started selling land for cheap price (mainly because of airport closeness, but also because race track). And slowly, graduately people started to settle in, and first shitstorms started to appear back in late 90's, and now it is madness. Track operating days are very limited, and there seem to be no hope for any serious track racing in Poland.

@@trevorarens7143 I highly doubt it'll happen with Indy, at least not in the near future. Myrtle Beach is such a tourist hotspot that while it's still moronic to move next to a track and complain about noise, because it's one of the biggest tourists spots on US's east coast, it's understandable. Indianapolis, on the other hand, is just some US city in the midwest, and since the downtown area actually has a decent amount of distance from the track itself, the sound issues aren't that terrible. While there is a small town called Speedway, Indiana that sits just outside the track, if you've ever been to the Indy 500 and gone through the town, I don't think the people there care much about the noise (probably because the town is called SPEEDWAY, Indiana) Along with that, the track doesn't have lights, meaning the races are almost never able to go late into the night, with the exception of the 8-hour endurance held there in September/October. So yeah, if you made it through the whole essay, I don't think it's gonna happen. But then again, as humanity continues to reach new heights of stupid that I thought wasn't possible, then who knows?

You need to go to Bristol then my friend. You would have a much different opinion after that! Watching a race on tv doesnt do it justice. The time and effort these teams put into these cars and the knowledge it takes to actually drive one is unreal. Just remember anyone can drive in a straight line, not many can drive in circles. Why I say that is if you screw your run up going into 1 it can hurt you coming out of 2 same with turn 3 and 4. Having the car not set up right can also screw your runs up it could be good going into 1 and 2 and be to loose in 3 and 4 or vise versa. It's not easy by all means. That's what bothers me about people saying driving in circles is easy. It's not as easy as it looks.

@@SurrealCereal Not enough short tracks. That's why people either have stopped watching stock car racing altogether or they go and watch something more interesting, like World Of Outlaws. World Of Outlaws races on nothing but dirt short tracks, and run about the same horsepower with considerably less weight. My problem with NASCAR is the lack of the "run what you brung" style they had until the 80s. Then they tried going mainstream, abandoning much of their core fanbase while doing so. World Of Outlaws has always stayed relatively the same to where most can recognize more than just the name, unlike NASCAR and unlike IndyCar. Don't get me wrong. I still would go to a NASCAR or IndyCar race. Either Indy 500 or Texas Motor Speedway for IndyCar, and Bristol or Martinsville for NASCAR. I went to the Auto Club Speedway race in 2001 and 2008 and although it was ok, I prefer the short tracks. If you want some real excitement on a short track, attend an ISMA Supermodified race. It's essentially the "run what you brung" type of series that only runs on short tracks. They're open wheel, just like IndyCar and F1, but with a V8 that's mounted on the left for better cornering. Everything about them is off-centered to the left for better cornering. A Supermodified once held the track record at Bristol. Can't remember the exact lap time, and the video is like 9 years old. It's on RU-vid. Just search Supermodified track record Bristol and you'll find it.

Judging by about half the other takes in this comments section, not even slightly. Dumb shit that's happening to legendary race tracks, be they ovals or road courses or drag strips, all around the world. But here's an idea......what if, when these people start whinging about the noise from a track that has likely existed for longer than they have, we just encourage them to go? Educate them on the history of the tracks, their heritage and what they mean to the community. Give them the details on ticket prices and keep pressing until they finally give in and go to a Saturday night short track race. Then the racing does the talking. It won't have a 100% hit rate, but cars have a way of shutting people up when said people finally bother to get eyes on them.

Hey S1ap, I love watching your videos. I do have another piece of history to add here for you. This speedway isn't just rich in oval track racing. In the early days of Monster Truck Racing, TNT Motorsports ran at Myrtle Beach in 1990. It was a hot summer night with major competition from the likes of Bigfoot, Grave Digger, Carolina Crusher, Equalizer, the list goes on. A truck that had been making waves on the tour through that summer was King Kong, scoring a few surprising wins over the top trucks in points. The track they raced on was a straight line, however one side was straight down pit road. It was a narrow lane. King Kong raced Carolina Crusher in Round 2 of competition, Kong had the narrow pit lane. Kong scored another upset, beating Crusher but taking a very bad hit at the end of the cars, sending the truck up on two wheels.. Driver Steve Cain stood on the throttle to try and power out of it, however he was to late. The truck went over the wall at the end of the track, knocked over the 76 sign, and finally came to rest on two brand new police cars that were unfortunately parked at the end of the track. The crash was frightening, and to this day is looked at as the most violent in the history of the sport. You can watch the crash by typing in "King Kong Monster Truck Crash" in the youtube search bar. This moment, along with many others made me fall in love with this sport. Now i work for Monster Jam, the biggest promotion out there.

It’s always a shame to see a short track close down, I’ve never been to Myrtle Beach nor have I considered it but seeing this made me feel really sad. It reminded me when All American Speedway, my home track in Roseville, CA, (Arca west races there every October) was on the brink of closing down for good, the difference is the track was actually saved as it’s under new management as well as well-needed renovations to the facility. Even then I still fear for its future. So with that being said, go support your local racetracks, a lot of them are being closed and torn down and it’s a shame to see it happen. Even if it means going there for one night, you’re still showing your support.

It's a harrowing fact of life anymore, and it makes my stomach turn. It's smack-dab in the middle of a ton of McMansion neighborhoods. They already out-bought all the surrounding land, so that's the only patch left for them to eat up. Makes me worry about the hometown tracks I grew up with, like William's Grove. Shepardstown keeps growing more and more with each passing decade. I can see the track being bought out in 30 years if the farms keep selling off.

I'm thankful tracks like Bristol and Martinsville are in practically the middle of nowhere. It's a sign of the times to see tracks like Myrtle Beach and maybe even the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway if NASCAR hadn't stepped in succumb to development, gentrification and noise complaints. There's still plenty of space within our great land to build good tracks. Feel like there's a growing market for that right now.

Living in southeastern Massachusetts, I have been a fan of Seekonk Speedway. Unfortunately it has lost what would have been its 75th season. Hopefully it will be back for 2021. To fill the void this season, I have been attending races at Stafford Speedway in Connecticut and Monadnock Speedway in New Hampshire. I like the local tracks for their seasonal rivalries in their divisions. Sad to see Myrtle Beach go, as it was a main stay of the Whelen Modified tour.

My local drag strip has been going through the same thing. The track has been in the same location since the mid 50's and has seen many changes throughout the years. About 8 or so years ago they built a new neighborhood a few miles away and because nothing is out where the track is, the sound travels pretty far. They got the usual noise complaints and altered the times for all the events, but about 2 years ago they announced that the track would be closing but never announced when that would be. This track means a lot to people in my hometown and it means a lot to me and my family. My grandpa made passes in the 60's and 70's, my dad raced a lot and won in the 90's and i made my first ever pass down a drag strip here. i still make it out to every event i can since i don't know how much longer the track is going to be here

I know ,because I ran this track in the late model outlaw from 1986 to 1987. This track had so much memorable experience and memories. I hate to see this track go,but like so many race tracks, things happen with out any understanding. This track will always be in my heart and mind for the rest of my life.

Another great video S1ap. Seriously you did an awesome job on this tough subject for the short track community. To see the hometown guy's reaction was epic. In other news... I grew up a mile from an airport. Planes used to fly directly over our house. Day, night all year, big, small, war birds, cargo planes and even some small commercial jets. I eventually moved away and after 2 more moves I am out in the country where it's quiet. I miss the Airport. I also miss the sounds of the lake nearby house #2. The idea that the "track" is bad for neighbors due to noise is invalid. Give them some time and I bet there are some that miss it.

Hosted a few CASCAR/NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (Now NASCAR Pinty's Series) races. Went to a few and had a great time. Reminds me of Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas Virginia. My old man ran there won his first race and me and my brothers ran go-karts there as kids. It was built in the 40s and used to be a part of the NASCAR circuit a long time ago. But people who live near it started complaining and they tore it down. I used to love walking out side on Friday and Saturday nights and off in the distance you can hear the cars going like a bat out of hell. But now when you drive by there are nothing but townhouses and it makes me sick to my stomach.

I guess I should my count my blessings in Northeast Georgia. Our tracks don't seem to be on the verge of disappearing, even the ones that are closed down. The communities in Winder, Hartwell, Lavonia and Toccoa love their dirt tracks. Road Atlanta is thriving on the IMSA and Trans Am schedules, but I truly believe its best days are ahead of it. It and its neighbor across the street Lanier National Speedway are gems of the local communities. Gresham Motorsports Park is in a great location near the airport, Jackson County Correctional Institute, jail, rec. department, etc. There's no one nearby to complain about noise. Hopefully the recent race at Lanier and the upcoming race at Gresham will lead to more racing there in the future. Lastly, Atlanta Dragway (in Commerce, 70 miles from Atlanta) is a staple of the NHRA calendar.
