Unassuming, tucked-away locations across Hong Kong have suddenly become tourism hotspots, partly because of a wave of influencers using the mainland Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu. The word “little red book” refers to an Instagram-like social media platform that has hosted a surge in “city walk” guides offering details about photogenic spots. The guides have become popular among Mandarin speakers who hope to indulge in cultural experiences and find tips about taking the best share-worthy photos. The Post caught up with some visitors on the Xiaohongshu path to learn how it affects the Hong Kong tourism experience.

Please do keep the heritage sites of vintage Hong Kong! Such places should be restored by the government authorities … skyscrapers are almost the same all over the world…tourists want to see what makes Hong Kong unique…hopefully they will Also revive their film industry, and offer incentives for foreign filmmakers to choose their sites for their movies!

Finally something that makes sense for HK tourism to promote. The old kind of toursim aint coming back. Now if only, it can work on making it more affordable so able to compete against other tourist market in SEA and EA.

about 5 years ago, TVB News Magazine or Sunday Report (forgot which one) did a report on tourism in HK. The gist of it was, for many years, HK was promoted as some kind of shopping heaven with many name brands in the city. Mainlanders who went to the HK would go there to shop and that's why we got that image of big spending mainlanders buying jewelry or some fancy stuff. The HKers they interviewed in the show said that there should be more promotion for scenic attractions in the city and more calm activities like nature walks. There's less shopping now and more about experiencing HK like what these people are doing. But then people who complained back then that mainlanders who shop too much, are complaining that mainlanders are not shopping as much.

Overseas tourists have plunged to all time lows. And as highlighted by this video, these 'experienced based' tourists don't help the local economy. HK parks, benches, ferry docks, overnight restaurants,.. Are now occupied nightly by homeless tourists from the mainland who try to outdo each other with how little they spend to tour HK. The more affluent tourists go back to the mainland each night where hotels are 1/5 the cost. The actual rich chinese tourists travel overseas to Japan, Korea, Europe etc. HK travel industry is on life support. It's done
