Visiting Largest Northern Gannet Colony in Canada. Best Wildlife Photography Adventure?

In 2023, I visited what is possibly the largest nesting colony of Northern Gannets in the world off the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, Canada. My adventure took me through mountains, moose, and foggy rugged coastlines before hopping on a boat to reach the island that hosts the gannet colony.
What is this bird like? Are they lovers… or fighters? Why are there so many, in one place, so close together?
Sit back, relax, and enjoy this adventure and learn more about gannets and what my adventure to Canada was like!

This is probably the best documentary on this year's gannet colony! Absolutely amazing shots and videos. We're lucky to see a few up close each year in Massachusetts. You're fortunate enough to have seen the whole colony!

Thanks Harris! I know what you mean, usually around us the best gannet sighting we can hope for is a random shore side flyby. So, I definitely was grateful to be able to experience the breeding colony up close for 2 days. It was nice that it was "close" enough to drive and van camp. I was happy that it was foggy all day both days I was there, to be able to shoot all day and then on the last day it broke apart for the sunset shots on the big sea stack arch.

Thanks Sue! Yes, we had a warm late Feb and early March so the bigger lakes in New Hampshire have melted out faster than usual and loons will be back earlier to reclaim breeding grounds. But we did just get over a foot of snow yesterday so I am not sure winter is done yet :(

Thanks Richard! Appreciate you checking it out and the kind feedback! The fencing shots were what I was initially looking for but I loved observing all facets of their lives at the colony.

Thanks so much for watching and leaving this feedback! The island really had the most lush and interesting forest. It was hard not to put more of that kind of footage in.

Thanks so much for checking it out Tim. It is definitely worth checking out if you can. The in person experience is hard to convey in photos or video.

Thanks for the kind words on the video and specific feedback. I appreciate you subscribing and I am working on more stories from nature. Hope you are well and that spring is arriving in the Netherlands as it slowly is here after I got a foot of snow a week ago.

Incredible footage, I visited Bonaventure Island in Perce Quebec in 2022. I was on that same boat taking images with my canon R6 800mm 1.4x… the boat was rocking hard, but I was able to capture some awesome images, even of the mating ritual. Gannets are amazing. Thx for sharing

Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences out there Nancy! I took the direct employee boat each morning to hike to the colony before anyone else arrived both days I was there, but kind of regret not taking the regular route the circles around the island to get a perspective from the water or broader shots. Must have been a bit of a challenge from the rocking boat with that much focal length. Glad you got to experience this place and the gannets too. It really is amazing out there.
