Not cool and after the snooty complaining last video about a flight that wasn't up to scratch because there was no free food served, now this? But hey, it makes for an edgy youtube video 🙄

@@SonshineLady7 Yeh indeed, Travis King, a US soldier ended up in North Korea on July the 18th and has not been seen again. Then there was poor Otto Warmbier but so many innocent people have disappeared there or were imprisoned and tortured, not least the North Koreans themselves. Just check out what Kim did to some of his own family members. It is beyond brutal.

Visiting North Korea is such a weird thing to be excited about... People are straving there, people are being inprisoned and killed for nothing (i.e. disrespecting a picture of their "leader"), people are essentially enslaved, they have no agency nor control over their own lives, they cannot leave... North Korea is not just another "interesting" country to put on your "adventures" list, it's so strage seeing people going for a trip there like it's nothing...

That's visiting DMZ not actually entering and visiting deep into NK. At DMZ there are some spots on the demarcation line where you could technically step foot into NK territory but that's it. @SonshineLady7
@SonshineLady7 11 месяцев назад
Neither did I but what I found even more amazing is that there truly *are* tours INSIDE NK. After reading Romee's post, a thumbnail recommendation popped up on YT. It's by The Travel Tellers. The description of their post says, "What is it like to TRAVEL to NORTH KOREA? 🇰🇵 In this weeks video we share our travel experience from the weirdest country in the world. We only spent 6 days there but this short time left a very SAD impression." They went on a tour with a group of people that had to be booked in China and, iirc, the flight to and from NK were in China. The group had to stay together at all times. Their guides said it is good for people in NK to see there are people different from them - a "learning experience." IMO, that would make NK citizens even more depressed!!! I'm still wondering when tours began - all I hear on the news is that NK is completely sealed.

Brave? It is obnoxious and a typical 'bucket list' ohh see me move. I liked this creator but last video she was complaining for the first ten minutes about a flight without free food, which came across snotty and stuck up if you ask me, flying with a charter plane to Japan. Before that there was a passive aggressive video about people wondering how she can pay for a half year long world trip. A valid question if you receive donations for having been sick. And asked by people who struggle to make ends meet at the end of the day. Now she goes to North Korea of all places? Why give attention or money to that horrible regime? This is not a nation that is just a little rogue. This is the worst of the worst. NOT instagrammable and not something to boast about. And how cool to upload a video from 3 months ago (birthday 30th april). While people think they have been following a travel blog a bit more in real time. Ugh

I don't usually comment but I still cannot wrap my mind around those outraged by the video. As I said before visiting DMZ as a tourist is NOT visiting North Korea or supporting NK in any meaningful shape or form. I have been there and I know the history very well. First of all it is SOuth Korea (you know, the good guys, our guys) who decided to make a tourist spot out of a war zone and make money out of it. And it is not entirely useless from an academic standpoint. Seeing the infiltration tunnels and the story behind them is interesting for any history afficionado. Furthermore there is a lot of "good propaganda" there. The train station that is just ready to have the train ride to North when/if re-unification happens, time tables etc... There is of course opposite propaganda in the NOrth side. They have also their own version of DMZ. That is expected from them of course. People do get selfies for sure but I venture to say most people go to step foot on important sites from a historical perspective. That's why you visit battlefields, bunkers, castles etc...not to dance over graves and be glad people died but because they are meaningful. And, by the way, if it wasn't that dangerous I would actually visit NK myself (visit for real, as in visiting the country). Why not? If something exists then it is subject from being seen. And probably better in the long run

It definitely seems that Romee is all about “living her best life”. She does seem oblivious to the existence of others and their reality. I don’t know, she must not have paid attention in school, when they provided insights into how truly despairing some countries are. No mention of the truly hopeless lives some people groups endure. Romee comes across like a somewhat self centered teenager, even though she’s far removed from her adolescent years. She takes time to always focus on herself and not in a way of edifying others. I’d feel very uncomfortable rambling on about the food, the fashion, the me time massage sessions. All the while seemingly convinced that this is a “joyful existence” and that Romee is truly an “enlightened” individual. Perhaps she might consider doing some fundraising, that would allow her to give back. To do so without feeling she needs to share with the viewers, that she’s actually considering the plight of others. She could do this for some wildlife refuge organizations as well. And not so she could share how, once again, she’s checking off her self absorbed bucket list. Come on, you do know that true and lasting joy, does not come from a life of self glorification and continually chasing self gratification. And sadly, this is not a mindset and life view that Romee just entered into after dealing with an illness. I’ve went back and viewed many of her early videos. The “it’s all about me” tone that is prevalent in her later videos, is clearly seen in her early postings as well. Try making this simple observation as you view Romee’s RU-vid content. Listen for how often she expresses care and appreciation for others. How often does she strive to build others up? How often does she express true gratitude? Possibly, Romee could consider modifying her bucket list? Or should I say, expanding and enriching it? And yes, I know I could just stop viewing her content. But honestly, I’m hoping to see some real inner growth, happen in Romee’s life.

I disagree with the majority of the people who are against visiting North Korea. I was born in East Germany when the wall was still up and we couldn’t really leave the country. What will bring this regime down is as much contact from the people on the inside to the people on the outside as possible. The worst we can do is cut all communication. The more tourists the better. I know what the arguments against tourism are but in my opinion the connection between the people on the outside and on the inside outweigh these arguments. Every positive connection between the inside and the outside will chisel away at their believe that the outside is the enemy. It’s difficult to explain, I talked to many people inside NK and it’s a complex topic. I spent a week there and would go again without hesitation.

You are missing a few important points here - there's no tourism in North Korea. Sure, you can take an organized trip there but this is not tourism - it's a controlled entry under very controlled conditions. NK is extremely selective over what "outsiders" are allowed to see. The regime uses these trips to build a false narrative of wellbeing and prospect (typical totalitarian behavior as I'm sure you know from our European history). We know this narrative is simply not true from many stories told by brave people who managed to escape. And it's also not like North Koreans who work on these trips/close to the border and get in touch with "tourists" are there to exchange experiances and have truth full conversations. They are most likely selected by the regime (since the regime decides your profession) and most likely not allowed to go back home and tell everyone around how they think USA is awesome because of a conversation they had with a tourist... I think Romee's video is missing a big chunk of context and it's just so strage to see someone get excited to go to a country this horrible.

And Countries that claim to be free are not free. They are just able to brain wash their people into thinking that they are free and that other countries are bad. So many of these people commenting negatively really think that they live in a true democracy when they do not. They have been censored into believing bad about so many other countries.

What's up with this group of people hating on Romee now? You're not being "woke" as you want to be perceive, you're being rude and trying to control the life of a girl telling her where or not to travel is a little sick to me. Good for you if you don't want to travel to North Korea but I think the "enemy" is not her but other people who has a lot of power. And supposing what she thinks about some topics is just as dumb as fuck.

What's up with Gen Z'ers like yourself, who cannot for the life of them handle valid criticism? Things are not black and white. People can like Romee but still point out things that are inconsiderate from her part. Without being a 'hater' instantly. 'Controlling her life'? You must be joking. That is purely your own incapacity to look at things in a nuanced manner. And deal with criticism. Adults have learnt that besides praise, they can sometimes receive criticism when they made a mistake. Big deal. Grow up and behave please.
