The comment about being copied up in a van with Oyakata really touched home with my nostalgia about being with my late Oyakata on the same such road trips. Everything you said is identical to my experience and some how in a weird way made me feel somewhat closer in spirit to you Bjorn. Surely we visited different nurseries but the quality on show was amazing, such nice material just hidden away, and the pots available to buy on the way were just hidden gems in piles under the benches. My wife Ann and I are really missing all our friends at Brussel's. Sure hope Rendezvous weekend makes a return. Spring time just isn't the same without it.
I pondered why the art of bonsai was interesting to me. Other than living gnarly trees we have on the California coast. It hit me. I am a magician, and bonsai is similar. Magicians respect the magic of Japan, many go to learn from teachers there. In fact first Caucasian to become a certified Japanese native speaker to English translator was a magician who lived there to learn. Magicians work hard to learn how to make something look natural without the audience seeing, or knowing, the reality behind the magic. Both get the viewer to accept the illusion, gladly. Interestingly Robert Houdin, the guy Houdini took his name from, created an illusion where a seed is planted and a small orange tree grows, bears fruit, oranges, which are plucked, cut, and was served to the audience. I have quite a few trees from Brussel's...All are Pre-bonsai material. This year alone I bought 2, 8 year old Tridents, to sit beside a 5 year old I got from them last year, as well as 2 Shimpaku. Nice trees, just waiting for someone with the talent, vision and knowledge to move them to what they could be....Pretty cool seeing the place I buy most of my stock from. Thanks!
You must be kidding about getting a Satsuki….yes! Hopefully there’s one or more in the van…nice gift for Luna…. Great video. Glad you got out and away for a break in your routine and loved seeing more trees! As a matter of fact there is a rare Satsuki named Luna….just sayin…my grand daughter”s names are Magnolia and the one arriving in august will be named Rosemary…and yes I do have several bonsais of those same names…again..just sayin..have fun!
I was just at Brussels a few weeks ago. There were a fair amount of jumpers landed on my cart. Their bonsai dogs are not as cute as your puppy. Congratulations on your new baby.
You should see the Hinoki Cypress at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Donated by Peter Voynovich, its one of my favorite trees on earth. Styled as a formal upright and 80 years old, it looks lile a giant sequoia.
Congrats w/ your First Baby, I check out your Chann. Every chance you Post . I've always Love/d the Art Of Bonsai . I've never actual had or purchased a Starter Bonsai Tree . But , Hope to deep into getting a start into it. If I can ask for a Favor , if you Know...at the time of Showing use a specific Tree like the Hinoki Cypress. Love the road trip to Brussels. Being in lower mid Tn I have been to Brussels a few times now. It has been awhile but my "professional" tools were purchased there and a few of my trees. As you I always turn to the specimen pages of the catalog. Congratulations on the little one.
I love satsuki/kurume... but I have at least 5-15 that die every year that I've been trying, lol. (just cheap starter plants and/or cuttings) None of my other plants have died; and I have plenty diff species... I will not give up tho.

My home town! Didn't know about the stuff outside. Definitely have to go check that out and see if I can find something. My brother worked there for a awhile but left because he was getting harassed by a co-worker.
I think you should add Azaleas to your portfolio at your nursery I'm think 100 for starters, would be a nice start 😊 all field grown to start them 5 years in the ground would be a great head start.

I have a question, When I get to old to take care of my bonsai trees would I be able to give them to you? I live in Scottsboro Al. not to far away from you.
Just make sure your trees can't slide around in the vehicle or hit the sidewalls. Try to park in shade so they won't be overheated. Have taken trees on "car rides" many times with no problem. I live in Illinois so welcome to my state.
@@danielkosta3134 Thanks! It's going to be three days in a box truck. I'm going to put them in last, so I can water them. I'm moving to Murphysboro. I'll have a couple acres, hopefully I'll get a couple more. Thinking of making a bonsai garden, open to the public. We'll see.
@@multipletanksyndrome have a good trip. You will definitely need to water the trees. Never been to Murphysboro so can't tell you what its like. Hope you can build the bonsai garden. Sounds like a cool project. There will be a bonsai show at the Chicago Botanic Garden on the 3rd weekend of August. Come up if you can. Big show and lots of vendors.
We take our trees from northern NH to FL Keys and back twice a year with a monthlong stop in the mountains of NC. Good advice above from the other folks. Also either bring a case of water or one of those tiny watering cans to make sure the trees have something to drink along the way while making sure that your car’s carpeting doesn’t get soaked. If you have one of this dollar type stores around or even a tractor supply, get as many boot mats as you need to put the trees on. It’ll save you carpets, seats, or trunk (although I would never leave them in the trunk unless you have a drop down back seat so they don’t overheat or freeze). A couple or three gallon jugs filled with hot water and the trees covered has always gotten ours through a cold night on the way. We have been know to take them into the hotel room before we traveled with the RV. People may think you’re a little weird, but more often they love to check them out and asks questions. Those little guys are pretty hardy. Of course if you are traveling with northern trees they tolerate cold down to 29 degrees with no extra care. But even the tropicals will stay good with a minimum of care.
