Echo Park Area of Los Angeles:
Echo Park is a neighborhood in the east-central region of Los Angeles, California. Located to the northwest of Downtown, it is bordered by Silver Lake to the west and Chinatown to the east. The culturally diverse neighborhood has become known for its trendy local businesses, as well as its popularity with artists, musicians and creative. Echo Park has many rolling hills and valleys with a few flat areas like Echo Park Lake. Its main commercial corridors are Sunset and Glendale boulevards. Historically this area was infamous as being a hot spot for gang activity. This was true in the 1980s and 1990s, but in the early 2010s as the neighborhood began gentrifying, rents started to skyrocket, and a controversial gang injunction forced gang members to move outside this area. Nowadays Echo Park is considered as a trendy area, known as one of "the city's hippest neighborhoods", with its many bars, night clubs, and restaurants.
Echo Park:
Echo Park and its Lake was earliest used by the city was as a reservoir in 1868. The company obtained the water by digging a ditch that sent water flowing from the Los Angeles River in the area now known as Los Feliz along a zigzag path that emptied into the reservoir. By 2006 Echo Park Lake was identified as an impaired body of water, and the city allocated $64.7 million to fund its cleanup and revitalization. The lake was closed off and drained in the summer of 2011 when renovation work began. The rehabilitation project tackled Echo Park Lake not only as a recreational body of water, but also as an important part of the Los Angeles ecosystem. Although Echo Park Lake is man-made, it is part of the local watershed. The lake reopened on June 5, 2013, after a $45 million renovation.
Vintage Stores Echo Park:
Echo Park has some of the best thrift stores in L.A. which means that going from store to store can easily take up a good chunk of the afternoon. A lot of these places are family owned and each owner seems to take great pride in having the most original and vintage clothes on the market. Intertwined between these stores are numerous trendy cafes, and eateries. Even though not too noticeable during the day, there is a big nightlife in this area with many Bars and night clubs with even some of them known for having live bands playing on a daily basis. What is fun about this area is that really all the stores, bars, restaurants are mostly located on the Sunset Strip of Echo park so finding all the interesting places to visit is actually pretty easy.
Art Murals in Echo Park - Eyes (Ruben Soto):
Before Echo Park’s gentrification many walls throughout this area had murals because they represented the struggles and the stories of the people living in this neighborhood that weren’t taught in the history books. In the past 50 years with the modernization of the area many of these older murals have been erased. This was not only due to the change in the neighborhood but also because of tagging, damage due to weather and overall lack of maintenance.
Elysian Park + Angel Point:
Elysian Park was founded in 1886 making it the city’s oldest park. The park was created by city ordinance and was sponsored by engineer George Hansen. The land was considered "worthless" at the time and because of that the land sat unimproved for decades, but eventually roads, trails, and landscaping was added. One of the coolest areas to visit in the park is Angels Point which is a small overlooking Dodger Stadium and the Downtown Los Angeles Skyline.
Baxter Street Stairs + Views with Hollywood Sign:
Even though the Baxter street stairs may seem pretty unimpressive from the bottom of them, they are actually a really intricate spiral of stairs that just keep on going up and up into the hillside. Since they aren’t going straight upwards, each corner seems to lead to more stairs which makes it fun to discover but also a little bit difficult from a psychological point of view simply because of the fact that the top of the stairs cannot really be seen from the bottom. One thing though that does keep the motivation going is the fact that the views of the surrounding area keep getting nicer and nicer as you go up.

Grew up in Echo Park in the 70s. Lived up on the hill in Kensington Ave. Went to Logan Street Elementary School, T. S. King Junior High, and Belmont, Class of '78. It was a shithole back then. Learned to fish there and caught my first fish, a blue gill. Left in '78 for college, then the army, then moved around for work, and never went back. I've driven through it years later as a lawyer appearing in downtown courts, and I even parked at the park one time to just think about where I've been and how far I've gone since those years. Yeah, it has gentrified, but I'd never move back.

Still a shit hole with dumpy apartments that cost a fortune.

The area was rough for many years and even recently when the whole pandemic happened but honestly nowadays it's really nice. A few homeless here and there but for the most part it's really pleasant. I do agree that rent is really overpriced but that goes for most of Los Angeles. Many apartments are not that pretty and the nice ones are usually out of most people's price range. There's just too many rich people or millionaires that move into this city and skyrocket all the prices. The nice weather, beaches and Hollywood have made it a place that many people want to move to, or at least live in temporarily. That being said Echo Park is worth visiting.

Well... here I am! Lol! I've been really busy recently but let's get back now to your videos. And you know that I missed your videos. And what a lovely video once again of a lovely place! And I don't care to be ridiculous but I love those boats 😂😂 But this place has so much things that I love or would love to see: nice place, nice lake, nice street art, nice low-riders, etc... And I was amazed to see the "Thriller's house". It made me think about the house in the show "Charmed" (that I love a lot!). Thanks for the video buddy! 👍

YES! the boats are a lot of fun to get on and they are decent exercise too as you need to pedal in order for the boat to move around. There's also another part of Echo park I barely touched upon which is all the thrift stores. They really have amazing fashion in them at cheap prices.

Having lived in LA I overlooked it for a long time, until I realized how many amazing places and architecture there is in the area. Since I live in Glendale going to Echo park is so close by I'm often there exploring. Thanks for the compliment about the video.

I used to live on a hillside right next to the park, walked around the lake every day. The rent was 65 dollars a month. There should be more parks like it all over the city. So healing and beautiful.

Sounds like you lived there in the 1950's or 1960's. I lived there from 1963 to 1972. What a much better greater and way different time there in Echo park. Used to fish there. The pool was across the street next to freeway and only cost me a nickel to get in. I remember the green meshed clothes bag on a wooden hanger with metal hanger hook on it. Used to find nickels in the pool and sometimes quarters. A found quarter bought me 5 Snickers bars or 2 bottles of soda and one candy bar. Use to go there for 4th of July fireworks show in middle of lake. Great time, different people different era different styles different values different music different country never to return again.

Wow, $65 rent. I wish rent was so cheap nowadays. I do agree that the park is healing. This area gets a bad reputation sometimes but they have done a great job at restoring the park these past two years and love taking strolls there.

I wish I could have seen Echo Park during that era. It does seem like it was a completely different place. This area has truly gone through many ups and downs, with periods of devastation. I do feel that there is a major effort nowadays to beautify this area. Let's hope that they manage to bring back some of that former aesthetic.

My grandfather used to work at the boathouse as did my dad in the early fifties. I got to ride the little boats all day for free and ate candy until I was sick. It is one of my earliest memories, I’m 74 now, it’s sad L.A. has changed so much.

@@TheDavidNeytsShownfortunately, the new Councilman for District 13, Hugo Soto-Martinez, has told the EP community at yesterday’s town-hall gathering that he will remove the fence permanently and plans to avoid a homeless encampments by offering services to the homeless. Sounds like he has good intentions to help the homeless but he is in for a RUDE awakening as most transients in encampments refuse ordinary housing, drug and mental health treatment. Also, Hugo Soto-Martinez (just like Councilwoman for District one, Eunisses Hernandez) is a police and private property abolitionist. So it sounds like we’ll all have to defend our families from violent drug-induced erratic behavior 😢😮

It was so great. Yeah, my car got broken into at the lake, I got mugged at the old Pioneer Chicken (stole my 3 piece combo), a homeless dude groped my girlfriend, I stepped in poop under the freeway bridge by the lake, got chased by thugs on bikes by Angelus Temple and had a group of school kids throw a Lime Scooter at my car as we were headed home, but yeah...great time

Wow, you must have had the unluckiest day in history. Too bad nobody was there to film it. Honestly, the area is really nice. I just went there a few days ago and it was super peaceful and clean. Lots of people around enjoying the park.
