Prayers For Bobby is a critically acclaimed, 2009 Lifetime television movie starring Sigourney Weaver as Mary Griffith and Ryan Kelley as Bobby Griffith, a gay teen who is rejected after coming out of the closet to his mother.
The movie was based on the book of the same name by Leroy F. Aarons.
Mary Griffith refuses to accept her son's true nature and sexuality, based on her intolerant religious views. Only after Bobby tragically takes his own life does she slowly come to accept and love her son for who he was.
On my recent trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, I visited the gravesites of the real life Bobby Griffith who is bured at Oakmont Memorial Park and cemetery in Lafayette, California.
Thanks for joining me today on another trip to celebrate another life with pride!

I knew a close friend who ended his own life at 19 due to endless harassment by the community due to him being gay. I didn't take part of it but I stood by and didn't do a thing about it. That is one of the biggest regrets of my life. I miss him a lot. He tought me a lot about confidence. I miss you tj.

As someone of the LGBT community, religion has been one of the most destructive influences in my life and it is the main driving force to push people towards suicidal ideation and action. You’re not going to come before someone else’s god, even your own parent. So you’ve got to get help from an affirming therapist and you have to create your own family that will support you. My mom is not as destructive as Bobby’s mother, but the lack of compassion and understanding is still there. It’s takes radical acceptance to know that your parent is an empty well, and you have the best relationship you can have with them by accepting their limits. Luckily for me I’ve found multiple people who have acted as “surrogate moms” in my life and I’m forever grateful for them. Thank you Steve for giving Bobby visibility and remembering him on your channel.

Oh, just thinking of that movie again makes me cry. So very sad but some sweetness woven in there. I was holding my little dog and when the movie was over she was covered in my tears and and licked my tears away. Thankfully my church is very open. Not all religions are hurtful. I did not realize I was born the same year Bobby was. That makes it hurt even more. When I think of all he has missed out on since 1983 … tragic. I am not far from here. I am going to plan a day to pay my respects to him. Such a tragic story but I hope learning and acceptance continues as a result of his story (and sadly many others). Thank you so much, Steve.

This is such a shame. It is the ultimate blessing to have a child no matter what their sexual orientation is. People made fun of my son as a toddler because he wanted to wear fingernail polish like the little girls he went to preschool with. My sister even had the audacity to ask me what I was going to do about it. I told her nothing. To me it was normal. She then asked me if I thought it would make him gay? As I have said to others, it's hard to believe we grew up in the same household. No, nothing like that will make him gay and I told her no matter what, I would still love him the best I knew how. He is now 34 and he happens to be straight but that doesn't matter to me one way or another. ♥️

I remember in high school one of the teachers that taught French was gay. Some of the kids would follow him down the hall walk behind him and make fun of him. You know I thought how could they do that, and I would say to them you need to stop that's so wrong. It was so ignorant. My parents didn't bring me up that way to ridicule anyone for any reason. I learned early on that is not a choice. And I cannot help but think, maybe not in literally every case, how can any parent spend this is child's complete childhood to adulthood and not see they're gay? Maybe I'm wrong but while it may not be obvious, how can you NOT at least see something? I know that it may not always be clear but if you raised that child and was with them nearly everyday, how can it be a complete surprise?

It’s not always obvious, Denise. But then again: people see what they want to see or are conditioned to see, that’s human nature. Have a good weekend 🏳️‍🌈👋!

There's nothing wrong with being gay. I wish I could have sat down with Bobby and his mom and show them how the Bible is completely bogus. The Bible is what destroyed both of their lives.

@@theretiredlifewithsteve Hello again. I would have shown Bobby and his mom that the god of the Bible is not holy, good, or sinless. This god had Jacob impregnate four women. What happened to the "one man, one woman" lie? This god blessed Lot's two daughters with healthy pregnancies after they had sex with their own dad!! And I would have said, "You see, Bobby? There's nothing wrong with your sexual orientation. The goofy god of the Bible can not get his own shit straight, how the hell is he going to tell you what to do?!" A god that creates gay people, and then, turns around to hate them for being gay is CLEARLY made-up. Mary became victim to religious propaganda that led to her son's suicide. The scariest monster Stephen King ever came up with is the religious nut. (See the original "Carrie" and "The Mist". It's terrifying how people become that way in real life, like that ridiculous Kim Davis, who denied marriage licenses for gay people.)

@@theretiredlifewithsteve Oh, cool! I just watched a Spanish video on Bobby, and found out that his real- life mom had a cameo in the movie!! I never caught that. It's the scene where "Mary" (Sigourney Weaver) is marching in the Gay Pride parade. She notices a young man in the crowd that reminds her of Bobby. She goes over to him to give him a hug. The real-life Mary is to the left of the young man.

@@theretiredlifewithsteve I posted the cause of death because it showed the depth of Bobby's depression. People die from jumping only from extreme desperation. The only hopeful thing in this story is Mom's recognition she was wrong, and her next 25 years of activism in PFLAG. 🌈
