"Portway" is the french "port" - to carry. So the name dates from the Norman Conquest. Its prior name would presumably have been "Carriageway". This was the main haulage route, presumably because it stuck to the high ground and did not get bogged down in streams and valleys. "T'auld man" appears to be Mycenean, 13 century BC. possibly earlier as it tends to the Minoan. But how did it get there and is it faux. If it is real, it is the sort of thing that one of the early romantics may have brought back from Greece (Nauplia) in the 19th century. It may be a tourist replica. If it is not fake and it was there in the 13th century BIG questions have to be asked.

I’d appreciate hearing about DH Lawrence from a host and Subsequent interviewers who actually like his work and personhood. I felt myself cringing every time a description was presented. Do you dislike him because he disliked Britain? I suppose that would be a human thing to do.
