The advice to use the correct rated TeslaTap is on point. Many don't appreciate the importance of this. I commented on one of Branden Flasch's ID.4 road trip videos that using a 40 amp TeslaTap was risky. He got all bent out of shape. Can't figure out why facts upset folks so much.

Clearly, Tom is the guru of home EV chargers. Some day, I hope he reviews a few chargers supporting multiple accounts, direct billing, and pricing tiers. These are desperately needed at condominiums / apartments for home charging. I installed and manage an Enel-X Commercial Juicebox. What other brands perform well at a competitive price?

Great video! Tom is a National Treasure for EV owners and anyone considering the best way to charge at home! Minor quibble: Nissan pioneered vehicle-to-home charging in Japan years ago so Ford isn't actually the first. Also, the tint on Tom's F150 light bar looks sharp!

When power goes out it’s typically very regional, for example, if my power is out even for several days it’s typically not out at work in town and vice versa albeit for a much shorter timeframe. Tom you have touched on this before. So that being said the system we are building counts on a very small lithium battery 5-6 KWH that serves a critical load (refrigeration outlets and lighting) sub panel through an inverter charger. The Lightning is being set up through the 30A, 240 outlet in the bed to plug into a generator transfer switch that feeds the primary panel. By night the Lightning runs all loads in the house with some management, including the charger to bring the critical load battery back to full. By day the critical load battery keeps the food cold the internet on while the Lightning is recharging at work. If work is out also, we are still covered for three days.

Ha! Made it through all of the video (in segments). Solar with battery backup is a great solution. The battery can be fixed like the Powerwall or any other fixed battery & portable battery backup in the form of a vehicle is a great solution to distributed power. At some point there will be 2nd life EV batteries used in stationary battery applications in homes. Thanks Tom for the through explanation of his get 1 system. Long, but worth it.

Awesome video. Love the collaboration between two channels. The charge station pro is awesome. FORD really knew their customers would want to be able to charge their trucks to full every night even if it was just 8-9 hours at home. Also the Home integration system is very cool. Expensive for a back up system BUT if you are going solar anyway, any 10 kw inverter you will get is actually at least half of the whole cost of the home integration system components and you can opt to get a 10 kw inverter even though Tom only got a 4 kw. I know this because I have a lightning, I purchased the back up system, they sent me a 4KW inverter and I returned it for a 10 kw one.

Tom and Kyle, I am one of those that installed the Ford HIS via SunRun. I have existing SunPower solar panels that provide AC via microinverters. Realizing that our new Lightning would require more KWH, we added an additional eight SunRun DC panels(these run through the Delta bidirectional). Although the HIS does function when power is lost, it only does so if we manually disconnect the SunRun panels(via bottom switch of the Delta). If the SunRun panels remain connected, every backed-up circuit flashes with interrmittent power. SunRun has yet to figure out how to make it function properly.

A good solar controller reads the battery and cuts back on what it passes to the system. The nice thing about DC power is that many different sources can input at the same time if they match the system voltage. Great system. RV solar/ battery systems work the same way. Get a few Lithium batteries and build your own "power wall" type system.

talking about "Junk Chargers" EVs in the UK have stopped coming with Granny chargers, we find ours very useful. So when my sister in law got a Kia Niro EV, and it had no granny charger, she looked at amazon ones for £190, I told her she'd be better off getting a Tesla granny charger (as almost all cars here are now Type 2/ Type 2 CCS) and it's great as you can hot swap heads on it.

Here in Australia, we have a Kia EV6 AWD GT-Line on order which is probably still 6 ~12 months away before we get it. At our house, we have currently a 4.5KW Solar Hybrid System with 12KW LiFe battery system and a manual plug in mobile diesel generator which can deliver 6KW into the system. This will be upgraded to a 24KW solar/40KW LiFe battery and a 15KW auto-start Diesel Generator very soon. We are just waiting for equipment as some of it is on back order. At this stage, we are expecting system upgrade/install within the next 4~6 months. I have been running my current Hybrid system for 10 years now with various upgrades throughout. Yes, I am a qualified Electrician + Communications/Electronic Technician, but not solar certified, so all my solar knowledge is via running my own system and self study. What I can tell you is that your current system is without a doubt 1st generation and NOT working as it should. When I loose Grid power, I barely see the lights dim or any change and on multiple occasions didn't even know that we lost the Grid and that we were running on Stand-alone. Your system should cut over in milliseconds...not minutes ! Your original Solar Inverter should also still supply power as it should have been AC Coupled and your hybrid system should supply it with the correct AC Frequency, which fools the Solar Inverter into thinking that the Mains Power is still on and as such keeps supplying Solar energy Power. On our new upgrade, we will install a "Grid Outage Alert" ceiling light, just to give us a simple visual aid regarding Grid Outage. According to Kia, their new EV6 is suppose to be able to feed back into the house, but that has gone a bit quite now. Should they ever bring the functionality to fruition, we might just integrate it in a future stage. More as a fun project then a real requirement in our situation...simply because we can and I am a bit of a geek when it comes to technology.
