Visiting the West Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville: Dark Tourism at its finest. 

Dark tourism is such a popular genre, and West Virginia has loads of it. My newest attraction was the West Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville. Known in its day as one of the toughest prisons in the country, it became a newsworthy address due to overcrowding (2000+ vs. a couple hundred), unexplained deaths (the tour will baffle you on how so many died), and the death penalty (where only 94 met that fate). Sad, scary, bewildering, informative, and gruesome are the words I found to describe the WV State Penitentiary.
