Dr Hannah Tavares discusses how photographic and measurement technologies perpetuated logics of racialized difference in early 20th C Hawaii.
Vision is a selective sense in Western European epistemologies. Modernity, marked by the proliferation of the visual is perhaps best apprehended by photography and the psychological examination.
In this presentation, I revisit the artistic and scientific pursuits of Caroline Haskins Gurrey (1878-1927) and Stanley D. Porteus (1883-1972). In their different ways, Gurrey by means of photographic portraiture, and Porteus through psychological tests and scales, both sought to make visible certain socially-charged things about their subjects.
I discuss how these two individuals were part of a broader network of relations, domains, colliding affects, and ideational intensities that express both an ethno interest and psychological curiosity about the sociopolitical effects of miscegenation.
