SACN vitamin D and health report
www.gov.uk/gov...
A reference nutrient intake (RNI) of 10 micrograms (400 units) of vitamin D per day, throughout the year, for everyone in the general population aged 4 years and older
The RNI and safe intakes were developed to ensure that the majority of the UK population has enough vitamin D to protect musculoskeletal health, all year round.
SACN did not take account of sunlight exposure in making recommendations because of the number and complexity of factors that affect skin synthesis of vitamin D.

Respiratory infection
COVID-19
Optimal Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D
It is advisable to increase vitamin D intake and have sensible sunlight exposure
Maintain serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D at least,
30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)
and preferably
40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L)
Recommended dosage for vitamin D intake in individuals who are at risk for vitamin D
Deficiency (1,000 iu = 25 mcg)
Age, years Daily requirement Upper limit
Years Requirement
0 - 1 400 - 1,000 2,000
1 - 18 600 - 1,000 4,000
18 + 1500- 2000 10,000
Obese 4,000 - 6000 10,000
For deficiency 0 - 1 year
2000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week
of vitamin D2 or D3 for at least 6 weeks
to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)
maintenance therapy of 400-1000 IU/d
For deficiency 1 - 18 years
2000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week of vitamin D2 or D3 for at least 6 weeks
to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)
maintenance therapy of 600-1000 IU/d
For deficiency after 18 years
6000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week
of vitamin D2 or D3 for 8 weeks
to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)
maintenance therapy of 1500 -2000 IU/d
Obese and malabsorptive patients
Dosage should be increased by 2-3 times
Respiratory Viral Infection and COVID-19
Outbreak of influenza infection is periodic and usually occurs during the wintertime at higher latitudes
but is sporadic throughout the year in the tropical area
Association between low level of serum 25(OH)D and
incidence and severity of respiratory tract infection in children and adults
A recent meta-analysis of 25 RCTs showed that supplementation of vitamin D2 or D3 can protect against the development of acute respiratory tract infection compared with placebo
www.bmj.com/co...
COVID
Rate of symptomatic infection, morbidity and mortality observed
African American
Obesity
Worldwide on average approximately 40% of children and adults have circulating levels of 25(OH)D less than 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L)
It is therefore reasonable to institute as a standard of care to give at least one single dose of 50,000 of vitamin D to all COVID-19 patients as soon as possible after being hospitalized

Thanks Dr. Campbell I was following your lecture since the start of this pandemic. I am a pharmacist working in South Africa and I have been taking vitamin D3 2000iu daily. I tested positive for covid19 15 days ago. Never showed extreme signs and symptoms. Only losses of smell and test for couple of days. No cough, headache, fever, shortness of breath and so on. So I recommend for people to take it. I thank you for endeavors in this matter.

@TurboCMinusMinus Excess vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, which means you absorb too much calcium, giving you a high blood calcium level, which is apparently bad for bones, but that only happens at very high doses. There's been a recommendation to take vitamin K2, to counteract that tendency.

Apparently it's more politically correct to deny that there are biological differences between races than to recommend vitamin D to save lives, disproportionately black lives since they are twice as likely to be deficient.
@blackboxcameracom
@blackboxcameracom 4 года назад
I think it is a bit more complicated than that. The UK government has been woefully slow on everything covid related so I would not expect them to give good advice now on anything. They seem to want everything to go through a clinical trial and have conclusive evidence before recommending Vitamin D. I think there is confusion about the difference between using vitamin D as a treatment when you have Covid vs. correcting vitamin D deficiency for optimal immunity. Also the government has spent 30 years warning of the danger of sun exposure with regard to skin cancer. They are right on this of course, but they have never mentioned the role of sun exposure in creating vitamin D before. Maybe they think this would confuse the skin cancer message. There is the problem that for some pale skinned people the sun really can be dangerous enough to put them in hospital after only a few hours of unprotected exposure. Maybe the government thinks that if they tell people to get out into the sun some people will over do it. In reality few people seems to listen to the advice on sun exposure anyway.

Dr. Steven Lin suggests: 1. Use body oils (SPF 0), which can increase the depth of penetration up to 80 percent. 2. Don’t use sunscreen if it’s possible to do so without becoming pink/feeling overly warm. 3. Use a reflector screen during less sunny seasons. 4. Eat sufficient cholesterol - A lack of cholesterol has been shown to cause malnutrition due to the lack of fat soluble vitamin absorption. 5. Make sure you have sufficient vitamin D cofactors: vitamin K2, magnesium, boron, and zinc. 6. Get perpendicular to the sun for maximum exposure. 7. Try not to tan. When your skin gets dark it absorbs less sunlight. 8. Don’t wear UV protective clothing. 9. Don’t shower immediately after sun exposure - Your body is still creating vitamin D on the surface of your skin. While we still need more research to determine an optimal waiting time, we know showering immediately reduces vitamin D production.

Love your videos. One thing to make things complicated is something we do in Canada. I work for one of our provincial government services and we think vitamin D deficiency isn’t as bad here as elsewhere In general. Because we are a northern climate with months of low sunlight, many foods (esp. bread and milk) have vitamin D added to them. For example, one cup (250 mL) of skimmed milk I have cereal with for breakfast gives me 45% of my recommended daily intake. Of course some people may have low vitamin D anyway. And supplements aren’t likely to hurt anyone so They can still be taken. But we do not test for vitamin D deficiency in the normal course because it is found in our foods as supplements and it is easy and cheap to supplement.

Behind the Headlines: Is NICE influenced by pharma? We take a closer look at media claims that NICE is influenced by the pharmaceutical industry. The Sunday Express has claimed that pharmaceutical firms have influenced NICE's draft recommendations to increase the prescription of statins. The draft guidance recommends that the threshold for offering statins to people to prevent cardiovascular disease, should be halved. It would lead to many more people being prescribed the drugs. The paper reports that 8 out of the 12 members of the expert panel who developed the guideline have financial ties to companies that make statins or next generation cholesterol lowering drugs. As a result, The Sunday Express questions whether NICE's decision to recommend wider use of statins was influenced by pharmaceutical companies rather than evidence. Here we take a closer look at the story. Why is NICE proposing to widen the number of people eligible for statins? NICE is updating its 2008 guideline on the identification of people at risk of CVD and on the use of lipid lowering drugs to reduce that risk. The guideline is being updated in part to allow consideration of new evidence on CVD risk assessment tools and to reflect changes in the price and availability of generic statins. Previously, NICE had recommended a risk assessment tool derived from the US Framingham studies. New evidence has since emerged around alternative risk tools, such as QRISK2, that are a better fit for the population of England and Wales. NICE is proposing that patients are offered atorvastatin, 20 mg. Patients with established CVD, type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes should be offered a higher strength 80mg dose of atorvastatin. The draft recommendations are centred on the prescribing of generic statins rather than branded versions. Since the 2008 guideline was published, atorvastatin has come off patent which means it is now available to the NHS at a much cheaper cost. The Generic Manufacturers' Association estimates that generic atorvastatin, rather than the branded version marketed as Lipitor by Pfizer, could save the NHS £350 million a year. Is NICE's draft guidance at odds with what's recommended internationally? No, NICE's plans to widen the number of people eligible for statins mirror similar calls issued by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association in their updated the guidelines, published in November 2013. It has been estimated that twice as many Americans, from 15.5 per cent to 31 per cent, will be eligible for statins as a result of the new guidelines. Closer to home, the guidelines being developed by the Joint British Societies Recommendations for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease (JBS3) for publication later this month will also be closely aligned with NICE's recommendations. The JBS3 guideline will focus on the idea of lifetime prevention, moving away from the 10-year risk model used in JBS2. The JBS3 is expected to include a risk calculator derived from the QRisk tool recommended by NICE in the draft guidance. Does NICE have a policy to deal with conflicts of interest? Yes, in line with all of NICE's guidance development, at the start of the process all members of the Guideline Development Group (GDG) responsible for formulating the recommendations were asked to declare interests including consultancies, fee-paid work, share-holdings, fellowships and support from the healthcare industry. The group met every 5-8 weeks during the development of the guideline and at all subsequent meetings, members declared any arising conflicts of interest. Members are required to withdraw completely or for part of the discussion if their declared interest made it appropriate. One member of the GDG withdrew altogether after declaring involvement in a company selling health checks and consequent use of cardiovascular disease preventing medicines. NICE publishes a list of the conflicts of interest for each GDG member for each guideline that is developed online in accompanying appendices. Did the majority of the group have ties to pharmaceutical companies? 8 out of 12 of the GDG members had involvement with pharmaceutical companies but this was declared to NICE and judged not to be specific enough to warrant withdrawal from the group. The Chair of the group - Dr Anthony Wierzbicki - was involved in a number of clinical trials of new cholesterol lowering drugs that are not yet used in clinical practice and are targeted at familial hypercholestrolaemia (FH) that is the subject of a different guideline. A number of declarations made by other GDG members were also around research and work on FH. Specialist heart nurse Emma McGowan received pharmaceutical funding for 12 months from but this was in relation to her work around FH services. Other declarations made by members were for conference attendances not specific to this guideline. Should doctors be receiving payments from drug companies? The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry estimates that British drug firms pay £140 million a year in 'expenses' to UK doctors.

BTW, vitamin D isn't really found much in farmed salmon, because salmon don't actually produce it. It starts as plant-based vitamin D, produced by algae and plankton, and that in turn, is eaten by krill and other smaller marine life. Those are eaten by larger marine life, like herring, etc., and salmon in the wild, will feed on herring, etc. Farmed fish is usually fed highly processed foods designed to get them to put on weight as quickly as possible, for maximum profit.... Good Morning Dr. Campbell, I hope all is well with you and your family as always. I must say the most comforting reality about all of this is that it only points in a singular direction. Let's see how many lives we can save. I BELIEVE this information and all studies, including this this study can potentially save millions of lives. The evidence is going to point in a most excellent way. Based on the hope for a more compelling and conclusive way. Why choose not to think about or consider a possible solution that can save lives? Only the thinker of such a conclusion can answer that question. I would love to be able to ask them that question. There's a growing team of scientist, pharmacist, physicians, and local leaders that prescribe to the same thought as far as the doses go. 50,000IU's is a great number to start with. Severity of condition is always a determining factor, i'm learning. 1st, DO NO HARM!...A great principle to live by. THANK (You) FOR EVERYTHING! You kept your word on this and I'm extremely grateful! I hope to shout how grateful I am, from a mountain top soon. "TRUTH" about a thing is always definitive! (3) times for me! I just like hearing your voice, not necessarily everything you say...lol 😆! Even though you are one of the greatest hearts I've heard speak in a very long time. "All Of These Lives Matter." Thank you for pointing to the evidence, it speaks much louder and holds more credence than leaders who run the world, currently. Some people should really think about sharing life changing information like this full time. I'm sure some people are strongly considering it for a time. Preventive is peace of mind... anything else greater than preventive, is a real reward! Concerned Global Citizen,

My mother was a real sun worshipper back in the 70s - always sunbathing and wearing a good tan. However, she still developed severe osteoporosis and ended up completely disabled so presumably she still didn't manage to make enough Vitamin D overall to save her bones. As with all supplements and medications the dosage ideally needs to be tailored to the individual.

Thank you Dr John. I'm Australian and when I was growing up in the 1970's we were the sun, sand, surf, and swim culture. Everyone was outside and we were all lean and healthy. But we were also mainly white as well. So we got massive sunburns. It was just part of the life. But then people started dying of melanoma and my State, Queensland, became the skin cancer capital of the world, and unfortunately still is (I checked). Of course the hole in the ozone layer above us didn't help either. So the campaign to stay indoors through the hottest 6 hours of the day, and to slather ourselves in sunscreen hats, shirts etc started. I was shocked when my kids got their first blood test in 2000 and were both Vit D deficient. 2 years later, so was I. We also have a lot of african, asian and indian immigrants and they avoid the sun as well as they don't want to get darker. I know this from speaking with them as neighbours, or in a refugee community centre I volunteer at. My last bloods showed I'm no longer deficient but my daughters still are as they hate the sun - it's pretty hot here in Qld. I will forward your video to everyone I know. We have a real Vitamin D deficiency epidemic in Australia this last decade.

I don’t think Vitamin D is the whole answer. Since its recently discovered that 88% of the population in modern countries have hyperinsulinemia (Insulin resistance) and subsequently obesity. We also know that adipose (fat) release cytokines. These can be highly inflammatory. Because the body uses macronutrients differently and because we have been told since 1977 to increase our carbohydrates to 60%, many are eating very poor choices of carbohydrates. Your body needs 2 macronutrients or you will die of disease. You must have protein and fat. Carbohydrates are not necessary for life because your liver make glucose out of either protein or the glycerol back bone of fat. If you eat a high carb diet, most will have a tire around your middle. And I would suspect that you have a higher % of fat in your liver, pancreas and around your heart. I then would suspect you have some degree of inflammation and diseases of what you have eaten. Unfortunately there has been recently the demonization of red meat. The most nutrient dense food on the planet. They have lumped red meat in with processed meat (which I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole). Very sad. Your public need to get a recently released by a insulin scientist Dr Benjamin Bikman from Brigham Young University, called “Why we get sick”. Every sentence has studies attached. I eat vegetables because they contain micronutrients. But my main focus is protein and the fat that comes with it. After learning how the body manages macronutrients, I changed my food intake (generally called lifestyle) permanently and lost 70 pounds and maintain it very, very easily.
@monicaambs
@monicaambs 4 года назад
keirfree senior I was like everyone else. I ate bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereal and not so much meat. “Meat is bad for you and eggs are worse”. Yes I swallowed the 1977 dietary guidelines whole. There is Diabetes in my family, one generation removed. So you could say I was already sensitive to carbohydrates and was already overweight as a child. I succeeded to loose weight at least 4 times but because I was told to just continue to eat less and move more, the weight came all back. I was always hungry and had very severe episodes of hypoglycaemia within 30 minutes of eating. A direct sign my pancreas was overproducing insulin. And thats why my blood sugar crashed. In other words I was hyperinsulinemia 30 years before the pre-diabetes was seen. Not until I understood that carbs (especially processed carbs) drive elevation of insulin, the fat storage hormone, did I change it. At 66 I would say I am healthier now than I have ever been.
@monicaambs
@monicaambs 4 года назад
TheLoreAxe Ahhh but they had a low fat diet. You must either have low fat and veg (but you’ll be hungry) or higher fat with low veg. I ate just like an American which is both high fat and high carbohydrates. The most dangerous combination there is. I ate the low fat diet mostly but was starving all the time and frequently couldn’t do it and ate processed food. Eating protein and the fat that comes with it has been the only time I haven’t been hungry. We are all different. If you can stay healthy and not hungry then eat more plants. I gain weight if I eat more than 20 total grams per day. But I think my mitochondria have been damaged because I ate the Standard American Diet (SAD diet) for 62 years before changing. I know my own body really well. I cannot survive on a high carbohydrate diet. It makes my blood sugar very high. Makes my HbA1c go up. It drives my Triglycerides go up and my HDL go down and I gain a ton of weight. But mostly high carbs drives high insulin which drives hunger. The monster (hunger) that plagued me my while life, is gone. I am satiated on a higher fat, moderate protein diet. You do you. You know your body. Currently I have never been healthier . I plan to stay this way. My diet is delicious and easy to maintain.
