Vitamin K2 and the bone heart connection

The bone-heart connection: the health benefits of Vitamin K2.
As we age, there are a couple of pathologies that start becoming more prevalent - Frailty and heart disease.
Our bones become thinner and weaker due to a lack of calcium and this leads to osteoporosis and makes us more susceptible to fractures.
Coronary artery disease also becomes significantly more prevalent and is characterised by increased calcification in the walls of our coronary arteries.
This is interesting because the osteoporosis is characterised by a lack of calcium and coronary disease, characterised by too much calcium and both pathologies are often found in the same patients.
To prevent osteoporosis, many patients take calcium supplements. This is even when body calcium levels are not reduced. However recent research suggests that calcium supplementation could actually increase the risk of coronary artery disease. In a recent publication, researchers conducted a systemic meta-analysis of 13 double blind placebo controlled randomised control trials and found that a dietary calcium intake of 700-1000mg per day or supplementary calcium intake of 1000mg per day significantly increased the risk of coronary heart disease.
www.ncbi.nlm.n...
Even more interestingly, a recent meta-analysis found that calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation did not seem to reduce fracture incidence in community-dwelling older adults anyway.
www.ncbi.nlm.n...
So this is all very interesting. Could it be that as we get older, the calcium which is meant to get deposited in our bones, gets deposited in our coronary arteries instead? Could this therefore be the reason why increasing calcium intake does nothing for our bones but actually increases heart disease?
Since these observations,a lot of interest has focussed on Vitamin K and in particular a sub-type of vitamin K called Vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is a fat soluble vitamin and helps activate osteocalcin which helps take calcium out of the blood and deposits in the bone. So if there is a shortage of vitamin K2, the calcium does not bind to the bone and therefore the bones get thinner.
In the tissues especially in the smooth muscle cells, there exist proteins called matrix GLA proteins and they have the function of removing calcium from the tissues but to do so they need to be activated by Vitamin K2 and vitamin D. So if there is a shortage of vitamin K2, these matrix GLA proteins do not get activated and therefore become non-functional and calcium does not get removed from the blood vessels and therefore get accumulated there and cause heart artery narrowings.
Interestingly there was a study in the journal of vascular research in 2008 that the amount of non-functional matrix GLA protein (I.e that which had not been activated by vitamin K2) was directly correlated with the magnitude of vascular calcification. The more non-functional matrix GLA protein concentrations, the higher the likelihood of vascular calcification.
So is there any evidence that making a concerted effort to increase vitamin K2 can be helpful?
Well - yes - there have been several studies that have confirmed this.
The Rotterdam study took unto 5000 men and women above the age of 55 and followed them up for 8-11 years and found that diets rich in Vitamin K2 were associated with a 50% reduction in arterial calcification and cardiovascular death. In fact mortality from all causes was reduced by 25%!
Another study, known as the PROSPECT study looked at dietary K2 levels and coronary disease in 16000 women and found that with each additional 10mcg/day of K2 supplementation, there was a 9% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.
In 2015, there was another really another very interesting study known as the knapen study which showed that increased Vitamin K2 levels (doses of 180mcg day) resulted in reversal of coronary artery calcification and restore arterial flexibility.

While viewing the x-rays of our patients, my attending made a remark I never forgot: (this patient was >85 years old). “This man is walking on his aorta. His aorta has way more calcium than his spine”. It was so true. It made me think about the role of calcium in coronary artery disease and osteoporosis. Several year (!) later I learned about vitamin K2 in atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.

Most traditional doctors aren’t trained in nutrition, therefore not likely to recommend vitamins. I tried nato and for me it was awful slimy beans. What a conundrum to take calcium for the bones and instead it builds up in the arteries. Thank you for being one of those rare doctors who look for new information

Thanks Dr Gupta, At 81, and quite fit, I was dismayed when my doctor reacted with alarm when my blood pressure registered in the 159/90 area (I had taken it many times and it was often 130 and lower) He prescribed the pills. I bought them but never used them. I started walking a lot more as well as working out at the gym. This has had a beneficial effect on my blood pressure. My diet has always been extremely modest in animal products of all kinds. Lots of fruits and vegetables. I learned about good diet from an old Scotsman who worked with my father at the New York Times. He gave me my first book on diet: The Sun Food Way To Health. Thank you for your advice. GPs are just not interested in looking at nutrition (vitamin deficiencies) there's no money there! In my experience it's either ppis and antidepressants under 40, with statins thrown in over 40. One size fits all money making pills when supplements can fix so much with a change in diet! I strongly recommend most people follow the vitamin D protocol and B12 protocol. I've been injecting B12 for a while now, as well as taking folate, vit D with K2. I have M.E and POTS and it's really helped!

I have been taking 5,000 Units D3 with 125mcg K2-7 for the last 6+ years. (I am 74) I used to have tartar build-up on my teeth to the point where I would have to have my teeth cleaned every 4 months instead of 6. Never again! My visits with the hygienist are very short now, because there is little to NO tartar or plaque on my teeth. It's awesome! The same has happened with my husband.I will probably add an additional amount of K2 to reach a total of 180mcg to be on the safe side. Thanks for talking about this.

Almost a month ago I started taking 5000 ICU of vitamin D3 along with Vitamin k2 MK7 made from nato. Here in Canada most of the people have low vitamin D levels and I am one of them too. I do take K2 for my heart. Also CoQ10. I would be interested to hear what you think of Fisetin, which may induce cardiac regeneration and protect from damage after a heart attack. Also, Berberine may help lower cholesterol and triglycerides which would be a nice alternative to statins. (It certainly helped lower my cholesterol and blood sugar.) I've also read that Berberine stimulates the release of nitric oxide which helps relax arteries and lower blood pressure. Doctors are at a real disadvantage I think when they can only rely on what they learn in med school and what pharmaceutical companies tell them. Sometimes doctors just don't have anything to offer. That's why so many people turn to more natural remedies and lots of those really work well. Nice to see you again. Hope you do more videos soon!

As usual, Dr Gupta, your comments are thoughtful and based on careful examination of the facts. For that reason, when I first read this, I began taking a K2-D3 supplement. I’ll be turning 90 in 2 months so will probably have a carotid scan done sometime this summer. Also, several years ago, I began having numerous ectopic heartbeats ( which concerned my PCP enough to mention possible A-Fib and the need for a statin. Based on your advice then, I began taking Magnesium Taurate and the ectopic beats went away until I recently ran out and got careless about replacing them. I truly believe your careful, research-based advice has saved both my life and my health. May every blessing come to you! ❤️

Also added D3 for various health benefits to stay above 40 ng/ml (100 mmol/L). All on top of plant heavy diet (plenty of green leafy). All this time later and still not mentioned by my doctors, although I put it on my patient supplement list.

Mine did show up as sever calcification on my LAD and had a STEMI 1.5 years later and ended up with 6 stents total. 2 specifically in my LAD. I think it’s crucial to investigate those with sever calcification and verify there are no blockages and stent it. The think you can save a lot of life’s with that.

Hi and thankyou for taking the time to post as it's a great help for patient's like myself. I had my widow maker HT last May with two stents, since then have followed the standard medical advice. However I have become increasingly interested in D3 and K2 synergistic effects, i take both as a supplement every other day. I have calcium hardened arteries and had been taking antacids prior to my HT. I have now changed my diet to be fresh home cooked food with smaller amounts of meat and more green veg. I have also eliminated sugar and most dairy. I make my own sauerkraut to boost fermented food. I have no idea if my arteries are improving, but I feel good. Other things I have notice are as follows: acid reflux gone away, piles have disappeared, athletes foot gone completely after 40 years of break outs, dry scaly skin on ankles and elbows gone, joint aches especially elbows gone. I hope this is because my general metabolic health has improved. My weight has dropped off without really following a diet and the fat from my stomach area has almost completely gone. I am seeing my cardiologist in June and want to ask about reducing my statin which is 80mg/day. Just wish I had understood more before my HT. Thanks again keep up your good work.

Thank you for your research, and honesty. I, too am confused by the calcium question. I have extreme osteoporosis, and have been told to take 1000 mg calcium, w 120 mcg k2 (m7), and 25mcg D3. There's mag and vit c in this cap too. Seems like a high quality supplement, but I'm questioning the calcium as I am plant based, and eat greens every day. I also had an infusion of "Reclast"... not sure how that affects the heart or the bones. I've been told a couple of things. The technician who administered the reclast said it is supposed to stop the advancement of the osteoporosis. I'm still taking the calcium, and my next appt. w the cardiologist is in 10 months or so. I have a pacemaker, but avoid dietary cholesterol, so don't have a problem there. I believe the osteoporosis is caused by eating a high protein diet most of my life. Wish I could do it over. Live and learn. Don't know what to do about the calcium supplements, but what I'm learning is that it may be doing more harm than good.

Dr. Gupta, it’s so refreshing to hear a physician think in terms of “I’ve introduced this fear… what can I do about it…” Often, it seems like physicians don’t even care beyond plugging in whatever treatment algorithm fits… Thanks so much for sharing! Also, I was wondering if Vitamin K2 supplementation is OK even if taking statin therapy? Thanks again!

My doctors have been telling me for years that I need to take a statin and that I was at high risk of a heart attack and/or a stroke because of my very high cholesterol. I refused and 3 years ago stopped having check ups because of the pressure they piled on to take that statin. I started to take D3/K27 along with my usual magnesium. Last week I had a blood test for upcoming surgery and all results were within "acceptable parameters" including ldl, triglycerides and hdl. My sister had the same high cholesterol and took the statin, then medication for angina, high blood pressure and was told it was because of calcified arteries. She paid for a private calcium scan and it was completely clear. They told her there was nothing there and did not have angina. She quit the statin.

Thank you, Dr. Gupta. In 2020 an ultrasound exam showed that I have an aortic root aneurysm. In October of 2020 I met with a cardiologist and asked for a coronary calcium scan, which came back with a score of 689. I started taking Vitamin K2/MK7, 200 mcg a day, with 5,000 of Vitamin D. I also started the Linus Pauling program of high-dose Vitamin C, Lysine, and Proline. Two years later, October of 2022, a second calcium scan came back with a score of 754, which I understand represents a very low rate of progression for coronary calcium since my first scan. Most of my life I had a very poor diet but now I eat a lot of high Vitamin K1 vegetables such as kale and collard greens.

I think you may need to increase your K2-MK7 dosage to about 600mcg, as a higher dosage has been known to reverse the effect of calcification. I was taking 160mcg before, but now on 600mcg.

Thank you Dr. Gupta. I finally felt obliged to go on statins because of a diagnosis of having elevated Lipoprotein (a), a heredity trait for heart problems. Have been taking D with K2 for my bones. Very worried about the side affects of statins. Taking 10mg because I already have muscle pain from fibromyalgia. Always look forward to your postings.

Great information all the way around; thanks for breaking it down. I’ve been taking Nattokinase 5000 to 7000 FU per day for about 18 months now…. I’ve had significant and impressive improvements in every blood marker; but I’m a high stress guy regularly in high pressure situation, accordingly my blood pressure is the toughest to contend with. Adding K2 to the regimen now…thank you!

I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere below. but I don't have the patience to read 300+ comments. My sister-in-law, who suffers from osteopenia, found in her research that K2 is used in very large doses (15 drops per day) in Japan as an approved treatment for that condition. She follows that regimen as does my wife, my sister and I for the last 5+ years. There are no side effects, my blood tests are great, and it costs about $7 per month buying K2 (mk7) + D3 through Amazon. One would suppose that there ARE large studies to. support this in Japan, though I haven't bothered to look for them. I love your channel.

Thank you for these open honest discussions. I started to take vitamin K2 + D3 at the beginning of Covid. I have osteoporosis and had been on a program for this before Covid but, like so many things, 'programs' went by the wayside. I have been reading and learning what I could and since I also have osteoarthritis in mt right hip I figured this just might help me. Prior to starting this vitamin, I was taking Tylenol for pain in my hip. I do not take Tylenol on a daily basis anymore. I am grateful to my family physician for taking me off calcium tablets a few years ago. I recently had an 'episode' but don't know if it was a TIA or heart attack because testing has taken 3.5 months to get appointments... LOL. (so glad it isn't an emergency). Thank you Dr. Gupta for this conversation. If I finally do get to speak with a cardiologist I will be certain to mention the vitamin supplements I am taking.

Thank you kindly for that in depth presentation. I myself have heart disease and went from being able to outrun a rabbit at 59 to having 2 stents after a heart attack at 63 with a 3rd artery too calcified to stent, and then at 65 having a quad bypass. I was taking a calcium/vitamin C/D3 supplement from about 58. My bones are ridiculously strong so despite some serious falls I have never broken anything. Living in Australia virtually all of our beef is grass fed (unless you eat Mac Donald's) and I've had a diet since my 30's that was low in fat and using high sterol margarines in place of butter and lots of vegetables eg beans, peas, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, capsicum & cauliflour and breakfast was always rolled oats. I never had much cheese and never smoked or drank. I just give this as a profile to add to your information base. Since the CABG (and after reading about K2 and calcium) I have stopped taking the combined supplement and now take Vitamin C, K2 and separate D3. My cardiologist said there's no research that suggests any link between calcium supplements and atherosclerosis so watching your presentation has me a little disappointed in her. My guess is that standard 3.5% fat milk is likely better for me than 2% given your dairy information. The RU-vid algorithm always recommends your videos too me, so if anything changes I shall log that information.

I started taking K2 at a time when I decided against the advised treatment for osteoporosis. The rheumatologist who advised the treatment offered nothing in the way of supplement or nutritional advice other than to recommend calcium. Thank goodness for RU-vid where I had learned about calcium and problems with heart disease. Also learned about other valuable supplements and will continue with these supplements rather than seek advice from a doctor who can't be bothered to discuss the various forms of calcium and why osteoporosis isn't a disease of calcium deficiency and supplementation may cause heart problems.

You are the best. You have given me so much great info. I take one k2 100 mcg/ and D3 125 mcg/5000IU plant based with coconut based by sports research. You also started me taking magnesium and my 2 arrhythmias disappeared. 2 yrs ago my bones were -1 osteopenia. It will be interesting to see now. I am 77 yrs walk 2 miles a day and I do a high level of ketosis. No sugar/no alcohol/one Tablespoon coffee also low carb and unfortunately do regular beef/chicken/pork/salmon, because grass fed finished/and pasture raised meat is VERY expensive and very little fat. But so far so good 118 lb 5’3” and a lot of energy. I do take a small dose of calcium KALSIO from fish bones, so we shall see next bone density test. Keep up the good work. Oh all blood tests normal. Flushing Niacin I worked up to 1000mg-morning-1000mg night (do not start at this amount)brought cholesterol from 240 to 184 and my regurgitating aortic valve is now normal. My Cardiologist said old valve no diet help. Maybe you could do some research on Niacin. Thank you so much.

Informative thx. I found I can’t tolerate fermented foods post covid as they cause IBS- high histamine levels in them and I think I am sensitive to it. I eat lots of green veg but remain unconvinced that mineral and vitamin levels are good in them due to depleted soils. So supplementation is best option. A recent scan showed some calcification in one carotid artery so now I have a route to tackle it. Appreciate you sharing your research and knowledge.

That's so helpful, and life saving. Having been diagnosed with osteoporosis, the doctors want to treat with high dose calcium and Vitamin D as well as Adlulronic Acid( Fosamax).. Having done a lot of reading and listening to videos of well researched professionals like your goodself, high supplemental calcium is not only bad for you. It can be dangerous. I've decided to improve my diet, do better weight bearing exercise and take lower dose of calcium with Vit D, magnesium and K2 ...mk7 if I can find it. K2 mk7 sounds like it does a better job of helping bones to strengthen, by helping the bones absorb calcium from the body...and far less side effects ( if any) than Fosamax...I wish more health professionals were trained more in nutrition and diet....it is key to our health. Also supermarkets often have these 3 colours on products to show degrees of fat and sugar, but there is way too much sugar in so much food. As one Doctor on here said, if it's not labelled or packaged, it's better for you to eat.....

I printed out a study on the benefits of K2 for heart disease and showed it to my cardiologist. He knew nothing about it, wouldn't even look at it, said he had too many other things to read. And he's considered one of the best cardiologists in my city. I've been taking it regularly and my calcium score test was zero. For those with calcification I'd consult a traditional chinese medicine or ayurvedic practitioner for an herbal formula. It's funny you talk about grain fed animals having less K2, of all the vegetable protein foods, natto is the only food that when having about a cup gives me the satisfaction of a hamburger, but most westerners couldn't handle the smell, I hide the odor with kimchi, lol.

My dad followed his doctors advice and took statins (high dose Lipitor then Crestor) after quadruple bypass surgery and lived more than 3 decades post surgery. Dr. Gupta is certainly not advising against statins. You can still take vitamin K2 along with the statin to help but not over do K2 if taking blood thinners. IF you are having (rare) side effects from the statin then ask the doctor if you should have a lower dose but I certainly wouldn’t drop it as they also also have anti- inflammatory and anti-clotting benefits. Listen to your doctor.
