I would love to see an update to this review. Has the app improved? Has the company made any improvement to the accessories? Where would you rank this compared to other products that are out today?
@music4965
@music4965 Год назад
Beware, once the app subscription runs out you can't even see the weights you use, how long the workout was or even the day you did a workout. It's absurd! That's basic information, if you want to charge for classes, games, "smart" data - fine! This company is charging you to SEE THE WEIGHTS you're using. TERRIBLE

They don’t show you the weight you used in the SUMMARY without a subscription. You see the weight when you select and while you’re working out. Im not saying that I agree with their approach to the workout summary, but that’s a pretty important difference anyone reading this should be aware of.

$2800 and then how much a month after that...hate the subscription model on everything, car companies are doing it now with different features! A good barbell and iron plates can be passed down multiple generations. Talk about ROI.

@@alfaalex101 to be fair, I pay $150/month for memberships for my wife and I to go to our CrossFit gym. This ends up being $1800/year. Even better, my CrossFit coach is going to become a Vitruvian coach so I’ll get training from him anyway.

Great video guys ! This space is getting more and more interesting. Also side note, I have been looking everywhere and there seems to be something missing in all the gym content ecosystem : there is no rundown of all the different cable attachment types with comments on which one are useful and for what purpose. Rogue vs Rep vs American Barbell vs Prime vs Mag etc / pronate vs supinate / wide vs narrow / static grip vs rotating etc… Not a single youtube channel out there has done that thoroughly yet. With Rep’s Ares coming out there will for sure be a demand for that type of knowledge. In any case, I appreciate your thoughtful content !

Tonal had no appeal to me personally. I think they fit a demographic but I wanted something with power and this machine has really surprised us.

@michalbugno8844
@michalbugno8844 Год назад
I've had mine for a couple of weeks. For some background I'd consider myself a beginner/intermediate lifter doing strength training 3-4x a week for 2 years. The biggest advantage I've found is the built in "spotter." I feel like I've been working out wrong the whole time as this has redefined my threshold of struggling. What I considered an RPE of 8-9 before is more like 6.5-7 now. There's no excuse to go a rep or two shy because you think you won't be able to complete it, Vitruvian will just slightly lower the load until you squeeze it out. It also forces me to go on high end of the rep range every time. You don't have to stop at 8 if it can just take off a couple of pounds to get a to 10 reps. Mentally this has been huge and I feel that my workouts are much more effective. Cons: - Would love a true incline bench. Happily would have paid a little more for functionality. The bench is fine, but nothing special. - Knurling on the bar, especially with heavy DLs. Skeptical with how the soft grip will hold up, but no issues in the short time I've had it. - The app is fine if you're doing custom workouts. If you're doing classes, it's a work in progress. For example, the classes that have you do time instead of reps start counting when the instructor goes. I could still be setting up my equipment or getting in position when they begin, then your 30 second working set becomes 10. The solution is to play/pause but that can be awkward if you're getting set up and then have to click play. - Can't see the whole program. You have to enroll in a program to see day 1, then finish day 1 to see day 2, etc. - No integration with apple health yet, but they're working on it. Will be nice to see calories in MyFitnessPal. Overall I love this thing. I'm a busy student and a 30 minute each way commute to a gym with free weights cut into my consistency. There's no excuse when the gym sits under your couch. The build quality is impressive and I'm picky. No issues with the weight being jerky which I was afraid of.

@michalbugno8844
@michalbugno8844 Год назад
@@jecwonch Sort of. You have to select an exercise and either reps or time. The machine doesn't know what exercise you're doing vs what you selected, so you could always use something you otherwise wouldn't work as a "custom" exercise to avoid messing up the data for exercises you frequent.

I've had mine just over a month and so far i love it. I've already squatted and deadlifted over 200lb so i already know that tonal would not have lasted longterm to support my progress unless i adapted my exercises to single leg. Yes there is no overhead pull down but......i haven't installed yet but I have an overhead pulley normally used for free weights that I can easily adapt to use with this. I also know the company is working on a bench that will incorporate some overhead connection for the future. Unlike Tonal, Vitruvian does not paywall the workout builder or exercise modes. What's paywalled are classes/programs, data-tracking and future game-type modes. The data tracking would be cool but I think you can just copy what you did for the day and build on that over time if you don't want the subscription. My overall take is that, yes this replaces an entire gym and I'm getting better workouts due to the adaptive resistance than I was with free weights.

can you do linear progression, like a Starting Strength style barbell program?
@Dude-does-stuff
@Dude-does-stuff Год назад
@@dangoldstein152 if I understand the question I believe you can. There is a progression option built in where you can add between 2.2 to 6.6 lbs/ cable each successive lift until you cant complete the lift. There's also a regressive version for going to failure by dropping weight each successive lift. I haven't tried beast mode but that's like an amped up version of progression. If you're talking about more like progression from workout day to workout day there is a scaled workout option in the workout builder that will increase weight per movement over time based on your performance. I use the scaled workouts and it seems to work well and not overload with too high of weight but increases a reasonable amount. In the workout builder it will hold your weight settings as well so you can always adjust the weight slider if you don't feel challenged enough with current selected weight.
@plmn93
@plmn93 Год назад
"Unlike Tonal, Vitruvian does not paywall the workout builder or exercise modes." This was my main question. I would never buy a machine that relies on a subscription because you never know how long that company is going to be around. Of course that is offset by the proprietary cable connectors.

One of the biggest selling points to me was that you can move from exercise to exercise quickly and the weights change automatically so the annoying fiddling with weights is completely removed. In addition, because of this efficiency you can get an equivalent or better workout to free weights in a much shorter time frame.

For curls, one arm rows, lying tricep extensions and other stuff there is more than enough resistance. I can usually only use a single XL plus a small flywheel so there is lots of room for expansion. I see a lot more promise in the Vitruvian though. I'm thinking of selling my kbox with all accessories to put towards one.

One thing never mentioned in these reviews is longevity? It has moving parts, thin cables, friction points, long term it's going to need maintenance and repairs. With a traditional iron set up, or a functional trainer, maintenance can easily be done by anyone and without a subscription fee.

Agreed. We have some "Ronfic" equipment at my gym. It's a good thing most people eschew it for actual weights, as they're broken all the time.
@jugjivan
@jugjivan Год назад
Yep. Not easily user replaceable as the other user states either and it would void the already limited warranty. After the warranty period you are on your own as per a company rep I have contacted about this exact product. For repairs in warranty they want you to ship the product back to them in Australia.
@Dude-does-stuff
@Dude-does-stuff Год назад
@@jugjivan if you're talking about the cables specifically those are easily replaced. There's a screw on plate that covers the rope/pulley area and the rope would just have to be wound around the pulley and threaded through the handle connector base. If you're taking about motors that's probably another thing entirely.

Is the subscription required? I love the idea of a smart gym but I know I would never use the classes or preprogrammed workouts. But having the ability to have 400+ pounds in such a small form factor seems like a huge win.

I was one of the early adopters in the UAE with the original trainer. Works perfectly well and even without the extra weight of the trainer + i don't think it's much of a difference. the software is not bad and the programmes are good. once the UI improves it'll only get better. even with the original hardware updating it's been great. i have mine connected to my tv in the garage and i train in it then do the ice bath then infrared sauna. Big future ahead for vitruvian as the concept of the hardware i think is the best.

There's a workout builder that you can use without the subscription. It works great and there is an autoplay option that will move you through the routine without stops and starts(works especially well with timed routines). There's also a scaled workout toggle that will automatically adjust the resistance based on your previous exercise results.

How hard would it be to make a frame and have pulleys with extensions down to the machine in order to be able to do lat work? Yeah, it would be half the max weight, but still. If you can do that much extra lifting with your lats, you could then just use the waste band and do pull ups effectively adding 50% to the weight (your body weight). The machine just has to know about you're working with the frame extension. Also, maybe Vitruvian could sell some of the connectors extra, and you can then hook up anything you want to it? How cool would that be?

@jugjivan

I strongly considered getting one of these. I researched it heavily and it seemed like a good product until I reached out to the company for clarifications. Warranty and repairability is a horrible deal for something where you are 100% limited by the reliability of the technology (which they don't even manufacture themselves BTW). If the machine fails and it is out of warrant you are out of luck and on your own. For something this expensive you could have quite a decent home gym setup even with products for limited space such as wall mount racks, wall mount plate storage, basic attachments, and adjustable dumbbells while saving some money over this product. And with that set up you could add on a handy gym or get a kbox for eccentric cable exercises.

Vitruvian responded to my issue the very next day. They also had engineers contact me to fix the problem and were willing to replace the device if I wanted. I can attest that Vitruvian customer service is A+.
@jugjivan
@jugjivan Год назад
@@bernardval7230 so within the limited warranty period as per their warranty agreement. That is not the issue to be worried about because that is the period consumer laws per their own legally binding consumer agreement mandate that they fix the issue or replace the unit. The problems start when that warranty is no longer in effect which per their own agents is going to be an hassle and you are going to be left out to dry if they can't resolve the issue.
