UPDATE: This is sadly an absolutely terrible product and I have filed the form for sending this back to HTC as not fit for purpose. If you're interested, I'll be doing a video explaining why, there's more to it than just the tracking but that's the primary reason. In the mean time, judging by the reduction in argumentative comments over the last day, it would appear most people by now have seen other videos confirming my complaints. In the first few hours of releasing this I was basically accused of either exaggerating or having unreasonable expectations. In short, yes the Rift S has the same tracking system and doesn't suffer from any of these problems, but that's actually irrelevant to a point as judged on its own merit the Cosmos is simply not fit for purpose regardless of what else is on the market. To conclude this, I don't know and you absolutely definitely do not know if these problems will or even can be fixed through future firmware updates.

I could see why. I was considering buying this over the rift s, not anymore. I really need inside out tracking because of space reasons. Unless they make a hot fix within the week, they will have a bigger flop in pr than the vive pro

@@fask5154 Being realistic about it, I can't see them hotfixing this into a workable product. It's not reasonable to assume someone would be released this broken if the fix is a mere hotfix away. I think the issues where known all the way through development but they couldn't figure it out or work around it. I'll talk about it more in my next video but I honestly don't think this will be fixed any time soon.

Don't know if this helps. But I've had to file to return my Vive Cosmos today. I've had it a total of 6 days and have taken, what I would consider, immaculate care of the product. Only for the right controller to completely stop tracking all together. I had some problems from day 1 about the controller losing tracking and then having to restart the program for tracking to resume, but now it has stopped entirely. Even when I turn the controller on fresh it remains stationary. All the buttons work, just no tracking on it. Also some big VR games such as Fallour 4 VR and Skyrim VR have no compatibility with the controllers as of yet. So those games aren't even on the table to be played with this system right now. I really wish I saw this video before I purchased mine. You would have saved me a big headache with amazon and now having to wait for the refund to buy a WORKING VR system. I'll be doing some research to see which VR systems are really solid products.

I just bought this product a day ago after their 100 USD price drop and I can personally confirm that these issues are still apparant, the tracking has improved somewhat but the lighting issues have largely made it unuseable for me as well. Just returned myself.

​@@Neil3DI don't know how long that thing has been in development for. I think it's being implemented, but by specific user cases. It seems amazing, like it's ray-traced or something

About those earphones, you need to push them in, and while it’s pushed in you press that little button over it to make them stick down. Everyone thinks they are just a release button

The earphones don't have a button? That circular embossed feature on the stalk is moulded and not able to be pressed and I can't see anything else that resembles a button, they seem to be a spring loaded mechanism

Did you get your Cosmos? I'm sending mine back, it really isn't an improvement over the Rift in any meaningful department in fact it's tangibly worse and leagues more expensive. This is one of the worst purchases I've ever made, normally I keep stuff regardless but out of principal for it being so god awful I'm sending it back to them and getting the Valve Index.

@@Neil3D Yes, I got mine yesterday, and it kept me busy for the good part of the day. I was ready to return it before I even opened it, I was panicking a little with everything I heard, but I reckon I take the chance to open it and make my own mind up. I think I'm going to keep mine. Living with an odyssey+ for a year, I know it's an improvement from that, and it's not a faulty product, I feel they can tweak it to something good, me too for that matter. First thing was the fov, first thing I did before even turning it on, was to take off the hideous rubber front padding, I have some neoprene I'm going to replace it with. with that I'm getting 120-130 fov, essentially, I want to see the whole panels, I don't like any pixels getting lost on me. WMR tracking is hopeless, but these have hope, and I can live with what I got for now. Revive starts up fast and running more smoothly than wmr, it's just not tracking anything, but at least it's starting up, so I think it'll be a fix soonish. In any case, I got a year of vive infinity, I'm going to explore the section that is cosmos friendly only for a while, keep my head cool for a bit. I'm getting the index too, it's just that I'm a bit of an extreme VR user, and I have a VR backpack, and this headset actually works better outdoors than rift s as well.

@@Neil3D About the earphones, I was just a bit confused with what this guys said about it (around 9.10): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Q9gmfjLG6M.html it's not a button, but on the top you sort of flip it inwards, and it clicks and pushes into your ears. I don't like it, it gets hot.

Stop using the quest outside then! From my count there are 5 seperate warnings both in unboxing and setup that tell you to not do that! You even have to peel the message off of the lenses?! C'mon dude

Damn, this seems to be widespread on all reviews. For those talking about it being impossible. The RIFT S literally has ways to predictively track movements. I was interested in the vive. I am super disappointed, debating if I should go with the Rift S or save up my money and get an index.

I'm giving serious thought to packing this up and sending it back, and getting the Index instead. It's woefully disappointing from a company who have been in the VR market for over 3 years already.

@@Neil3D I was advised to avoid HTC for the customer service alone. But I was hoping they'd pull something off with this. I kinda want a little more than 80hz that the Rift S offers because I've got a 2080ti. Think i'mma just save my money and pick up the index

@@TheTacticalBrit i got my index recently after having a rift s (it had tracking problems and would just black screen some times) but i love my index, the FOV is great, its super comfortable and the controllers are really nice. 100% worth it.

I'm sad to see how incompetent HTC has been with the cosmos but unfortunately, I saw this coming from a mile away. Without the help of Valve, I had no hope for HTC to make their own tracking system from scratch from past experiences with their products overall.

@@QuixoticPenguin they might just not care about US/ Europe market anymore, and completely dominate the Asian market where VR is really booming. Oculus and Valve have no presence there (Chinese obstacles)

Yeah I'm so glad I didn't buy this thing and I was looking forward to it... I rather went ahead and got the HTC Deluxe Audio Strap for my Quest and hooked up a battery pack to the back and now I'm completely happy and the Link is releasing soon.. HTC dropped a embarrassing product 🤯

If you look at the early comments not long after I uploaded this, apparently I was exaggerating a "tiny" problem and was expecting too much! The thing is, the Rift S tracking is almost as good as perfect. This however is utter garbage and I'm sending it back.

@@Neil3D it's absurd we have to wait a year to get the lighthouse tracking mod for it, since I've already have the money saved for the cosmos I might as well just move up to the index then.

@@jamesonesposito That's exactly what I'm doing, I'll be getting the Index instead. I can't strongly enough advise against buying this. A company who have 3+ years experience in the VR market and much longer in development, can't use the 'day 1' or 'teething issues' excuse for something being this poor. Amongst many other things which I'll cover in the next video, unless you have the halo strap so tight that your brain is starved of blood, it leaks light through gaps in the band which shines onto the lenses whilst you're wearing it!

@@Neil3D i got the index and used my vive light houses. Money well spent. 50 dollars more for superior tracking and controllers, and the "higher resolution" the cosmos has is an irrelevant 100 pixels. by the time you get the tracking on the cosmos to match the lighthouse system, itll cost over 500 dollars on top of the original purchase (assuming you dont have vive controllers and base stations already) and assuming you do have a vive already, the index is the only sensible upgrade

The vive uses it's cameras to track the location of the controllers. If you block the light from the controller with your forearm then it's no wonder it loses tracking of it.

Honestly, if you're expecting that system to work with your arm blocking the cameras I don't know why you purchased it. You're asking for them to perform the literal impossible. Just wait until they release tower tracking in a few months and then you can paint behind a solid object.

@@Neil3D I never comment on youtube pretty much, but I feel like I almost have to right now. When there is a literal camera being used to track your controller and you cover the controller you want it to see it's almost comical. It's pretty much the same thing as putting a gopro against a wall and expecting to be able to see what's behind it. And your response barely makes sense, what do you expect them to do? Use GPS to track the controllers? Because last time I checked, bluetooth isn't able to track locations like that.

@@Komocka1 Did you ever seen a Quest camera test? What do you think that headset using an X-ray or why can be track the controllers with the same positions like in this video? The Quest using 4 camera and miss the controller only if that behind you. This headset has 6!!! camera. This is unacceptable tracking.

@@Komocka1 Why are you hyper focusing on the occlusion issue? I also intentionally and clearly made a point of showing it failing to track the controllers whilst they where in full unobscured view of all 6 tracking cameras. There are sensors covering a full frontal dome around the HMD, but you literally saw it completely fail when one of the controllers went around 55 degrees off centre. The reason I even mentioned the occlusion issue is because Oculus have already solved this, the solution exists, but HTC chose to not pursue it prior to shipping. By the way this isn't me trying to be a special snowflake, the tracking on this thing is being labelled as not fit for purpose all over the place. And your GoPro example is even more confusing to me. Of course you wouldn't buy a GoPro to see through a wall, so why are HTC putting a GoPro in a device that needs to see one object behind another? One hand passing under another is far from a far fetched unexpected occurrence, so if they can't figure it out knowing it needs to do that, sorry but use something else, innovate, or use your base stations. I'm staggered that I'm having to justify why its not OK to sell something which can't do something it needs to do.
