It's a long one so grab a cup of tea and get yourself comfortable. I visit with Richard & Paul to film answers to some of your questions.......we had so many great questions we had to make a second part which will be on R&P's channel in a couple of days. They are such easy, wonderful company......but sometimes that makes it hard to film.....so there are a few outtakes added at the end!
Watch the second part on Richard & Paul's channel (in a couple of days) at: / @richardandpaul

Bonzer; three of my favourite RU-vid people all at once! So many good ideas here, thank you all. On the issue of growing clover in your grassy areas, I heartily endorse this and the bees do love it. So lovely also to walk on shoeless. However, don't be a twerp like my husband, who on one of his many barefoot romps on the flowery sward wasn't looking where he was putting his feet, stood on a poor bee and got stung. Now he's a bit more careful with the hello trees hello sky dance!

Ah, yes, I should have mentioned about the barefoot/bee issue......I have a lovely patch of clover right next to the lavender......I tend not to use that path barefoot! ;-)

I have always hated radishes until someone told me to try roasting them. Since then I really like radishes as long as they are roasted, sautéed, or used in soups. They really have an entirely different flavor and lose the bitterness.

23:42 Speaks volumes! Rich has such a gentle answer at 23:49:-) 45:35 Borage will bring honeybees so plant some around the beans. Buddleia definitely needs to be deadheaded! I of course remove large old wood early in the spring. I don't deadhead anything after August until spring comes. I do compost my cardboard boxes. I tear the boxes and remove the cellophane tape. If a tape is stubborn or missed this is not a problem bc it'll release the next year. I even compost shiny pizza boxes. I spend quite a bit de time tearing boxes and planting them in my garden. I always have a stack de boxes ready for the garden. Our boro gave compost trash cans. The nerve de them to take our browns, cardboard when we need 4 browns: 1 green, smh:-)

Great A & A! You're so adorable as a trio. Thank you for addressing my Gigantes Bean ( blossom drop) problem. 😁 💕🌱 I've only been able to find one stateside source for seed, Olive Nation in Massachusetts. The bag is labeled "Greek Gigantes Beans", but unfortunately no seed origin is listed. I had also wondered about our hot summers and got this year's seedlings in the ground at the beginning of May. I really wish I had sourced fresh seed when I was in the UK last month! 😒

@mariecurrie7657

Excellent! That was very educational and entertaining! Re: broad beans... even without pollination, the plants will form pods from the flowers. The pods will be empty at maturity however... (I grew broad beans on a 5th floor balcony once ~ no pollinators up that high or that early in the season). An early frost could remove, damage flower buds or make existing flowers drop resulting in less pods. Cliff & Diane at Castle Hill cover their carrot sowing with damp burlap/hessian fabric. When watering, you won't dislodge any tiny sprouts. It's easy to lift & see what's going on. And you won't starve them completely of light as you would with a plank. I do this for parsnips too.

Blossom drop spray the flower or put the spray of a hose pipe on it as if watering. Ever heard of mornings have kept one in a pot moved indoors every winter for 4 years. Smothering the weeds with cardboard it also feed the worm and encourage mycelium into the soil. Lots of pizza boxes can serve that purpose thanks for the video.

I use wood chips (over heavy cardboard) paths but Im on heavy sand and my grass is way too patchy. Still allows water to percolate. I love walking on grass but mowing and strimming requires equipment whereas wood chips only require a tiny bit of weed pulling in our more acid soil. Of course I garden at my home so an allotment could be different. I love the Q and A. I so agree with you on the tomatoes! I love everything about them. Knock wood we are having a lovely 2019 garden season despite the late start and very cool wet spring. Thanks for sharing your pals with us Vivi!! 🤗. I am using white mesh shade cloth to reflect the intense sun but still let water through for my bell peppers and young seedlings. Last year I had a lot of blossom drop but we also had a drought and high temps in 2018. We have short spurts of high heat this year but Im not taking chances. So far flower buds look very healthy. Fingers crossed! 😉

What a great Q&A! Thank you guys!!! Regarding growing broad beans in Pennsylvania... Poland is zone 6A 6B. There's no way of growing anything outside in the winter time. Everything dies back; soil is frozen - in some parts of the country for over a meter (around 40 in)! So no overwintering broad beans in Pennsylvania (same zone) I'm afraid.
@blueponyfarm1962
@blueponyfarm1962 5 лет назад
I agree with you 100%. Zone 6 winter in Pennsylvania means not just lots of snow, but the ground can be frozen down to a foot below the surface for weeks at a time. This is why we can't leave carrots, parsnips, sprouts, etc to harvest gradually over the winter. They turn into veggie sludge. 😢
@WhatVivididnext

RE: NE Pa. USA I live close by to there and I can say that about may 10th or so we had a very cold. very windy day with rain. It blew all the blossoms off my newly planted apple trees which saved me the trouble of taking them off. Many plants that I was hardding off were really hit hard and took a while to recover from that. Weather is crazy this year with heavy rainy super windy days.

I myself grow in zone 7b, and Charles Dowding grow in zone 8. In the US we have a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant hardiness zone map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. As a rough guide for landscaping and gardening, defines from 1 to 13 zones by annual extreme minimum temperature.

Hi Vivi, just commented in wordy lengthy fashion of the latest video on useful tools... can't wait for the other parts. But THIS video is wonderful. The snail traps tips, the yellowing tomato tips, and the urine tips... I am not kidding when I say I take notes. 😂🥰 To be fair, I do google a fair bit as your area is warmer than we are, but I am surprised that we seem to have a fairly nice micro climate here on the farm. These two seem to be so fun and lovely souls. I admit to allotment envy for the social side. It is a tradeoff that I have space here, but some days, I would trade it for an allotment and the social side of things. Although, there too, I imagine there can be issues, people being as varied as veggies and weeds. So, pros and cons. I choose to bloom where I am planted 😉 Look at me, all these gardening metaphors 😂 Another chatty comment, but thank you for all the good tips!

Ideally yes.....it helps them stay good for longer (especially if you are planning to store them for longer than 6 months). If I harvest a small amount I do generally blanch them but if it's a big harvest (like the broad beans were) I simply don't have time......but I also scoff them pretty quickly. ;-)

@@WhatVivididnext Are watering by can? If, so fill the nite before or fill a barrel.

This is no longer possible as they use chloramine. Which does not dissipate you have to use a different chemical to remove it.

I’ve heard that some/many pubs use a suction system to suck the spillage out of the slops tray and back into the pump feed. Essentially, the overspill - including debris from the bar staffs’ hands and germs from other drinkers’ getting refills go straight back into the pump system. 😵

@@anneirenej You’d think so, wouldn’t you? But autovac/economiser systems are still being sold to the pub trade. To be fair, they’re probably only likely to be installed more widely during economic downturns... oh dear.
