This is why some of us are never subscribed to most of the tech channels around. You never get to hear or see anything new. It's always, "this is the best camera in any smart phone", based on the "brand name" the phone carries. Love this kind of showdown that brings actual info and proper reasons to the table and always giving credit where it's due without paying much attention to the brand name. Looking forward to the vivo X80 pro Vs Xperia 1iv show down. It just has to come through! Thank you so much

Great to see this details discussed. It's frustrating to see stuff like Dxo doing rigorous tests but limiting it only to the most basic possible point and shoot usage (omitting stuff as simple as manually activated night mode if I'm not mistaken). Currently, the phone with the craziest aperture equivalent is Honor's Magic4 Ultimate with a 23mm F4.848 main camera. It's a shame it doesn't have a global release. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is also interesting for its 35mm equivalent main lens.

A very useful review that takes a different approach to explain the relavtive merits of conventional cameras with mobiles. For many years I have used mobile and DSLR/Mirrorless (including the G9) and now almost exclusively shoot on my S22U and iPhone pro Max as the 'need' for the G9 becomes less relevant for my style of photography.

I've been following you for years, and last year I decided to upgrade my phone just for the camera wasn't worth so I bought a proper camera, the Olympus M10 Mark IV which is a Micro Fourth Thirds sensor format, it just seems logical when moving from a phone to a not so large camera with not so large lenses! It'd be really fun to see some camera-focused videos in the future! Yeah, it wasn't hard to notice how much they lie about the actual aperture size, even with the kit lens at 14mm f3.5 the Bokeh was a lot more pronounced than on my LG V60.

Master class bro So the bigger sensor and lens really only gives some better detail in the day and better low light images? How much more detail are we talking? Something only when pixel peeping? Something that can be measured? Or is a $2400 full frame camera at f5.4 going to give only marginal quality over a $800 smartphone at this point? Also are raws worth shooting if they are 5x bigger images than a jpg but when pixel peeping the quality looks pretty much identical. Maybe more grainy. Is this only so you can edit and save copies without losing data? Lots to think about there...

JUST photography? It still kinda depends on what YOU like on a camera, and how much you'll use the multiple sensors on the back. Things like controls, auto focus, wide and telephoto performance, shouldn't be taken lightly. But if you think you live mostly on the main sensor, I'd lean vivo.

I do agree with you on many fronts. I often lament that my mirrorless prosumer camera lacks the software/chipset that enabled phone cams to advance in great strides in recent years... esp now that sensor size is also catching up (Xiaomi top-ender is rocking a "one-inch" sensor). That said, my 10-year-old DSLR and my 5-year-old mirrorless are likely going to last another 1 to 2 decades (apart from needing eventually replacement batteries), but I'm not sure with current phone designs, when other functional parts of the phone (OS, battery) start to deteriorate, how easy would it be to refresh it to keep for more than 5 years. My ZTE Axon 7 is now only being used to play music, while plugged into a power bank... OS has slowed down so much that really the only thing of value is the DAC/amp. No doubt, I've had my eye on the x70 pro+ and x80 pro, for my next phone. The best camera is indeed the one you brought. My big cameras only come out for work and designated photo outings.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад
I mean sure, but you mentioned yourself, your camera has a user replaceable battery. A camera is a RIDICULOUSLY simple gadget compared to a radio enabled pocket computer. The point I'm making here is NOT that someone should expect to completely replace a mirrorless with a phone AND expect a phone to last the same length of time as a single mirrorless body. It's to inform the shopping trends, where someone who wants a more photographic look from a phone should be shopping 2-3 year cycles with brands that truly offer those improving camera sensors and processing. Even if you have an old DSLR, you're still going to buy a phone. Folks who care about having a better camera on them at all times should be interested in better phone cameras.
@nikytamayo
@nikytamayo 2 года назад
So happy that we're entering a period where bigger sensors are being normalized. Now that the chip shortage is starting to ease, I hope that next year, I will have the option to replace one of my 1/1.3" phone cameras with a 1" sensor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy 2 года назад
I think the next "mainstream" size will be 1/1.3 - 1/1.28. Some premium phones like the Xiaomi will climb up to 1/1.12. And then following that, we'll get some more options properly arriving at 1". Gotta give Sharp SOME competition.
@nikytamayo
@nikytamayo 2 года назад
@@SomeGadgetGuy I was bummed that 1/1.3 got as far down as the $400 range and now they're going back to 1/1.5 and 1/1.7. But yes, with flagships pushing back closer 1" now, more affordable and widespread 1/1.3s should be inbound!

There is another factor here that is worth mentioning. The sharpness of the lens. Although you are right that in terms of brightness and field of view the two cameras will be the same,I suspect that in their respective wide end the lens of the Panasonic will be sharper than the X80 Pro's. I suspect it I don't know it for a fact cause I possess only the smartphone. So the image will not be exactly the same. Despite the fact that the lens is made of glass in the X80 Pro I believe they will implement more sophisticated glass on the camera which partly justify the price difference. Still a very worthy camera on the X80 Pro.
