Vlad's Osu short film trilogy are some of my favorite independent shorts on RU-vid. Glad to see the HK influence is still alive and kicking.

Until I started watching these action essays and interviews I never realized the distinctness of Korean martial arts action and how Vlad in particular created his own version of it. I've watched both styles of fight choreography for years and years and never did I notice. To me Korean film fighting was either Bourne-like e.g. The Man From Nowhere, more brawler-based like Oldboy, or a semi-Hong Kong-esque Taekwondo flavor like in The City of Violence. But I can start to see the unique elements in Korean action that aren't merely borrowed from other regional choreographic forms. Vlad's action aesthetic has always stood out as his own but only now am I starting to catch some of the supposed "Korean-ness" in it...

Simon Rhee talks about it in his upcoming episode too. I still don't have as good a grasp on it as I do with HK or JP action. We also can't discount Hollywood's influence on Korean cinema after WWII.

@@EricJacobusOfficial Can't wait to see Simon Rhee's insights into the Korean action approach. I've also looked into some of Hwang Jang Lee and Casanova Wong's older Korean movie before they made it big in Hong Kong and they came across to me as basically Korean kung fu flicks. Maybe minor differences to a better trained eye but to me they seemed like old-school HK martial arts films yet simply Korean produced. Would love to know more about the post-WWII Hollywood influence on Korean films though...

Great episode. Vlad's great at summing up the different styles and era's of martial arts cinema. And explaining how he translated his observations into his work in the Western and Indian films worlds - while also dealing with the practical considerations of each project. A really great primer here for aspiring screen fighters (or aspiring choreographers or fight coordinators).

What Vlad's said about Hong Kong action cinema, can also be applied to Vietnamese (between the Thai and Indonesian period) and Japanese action cinema it comes and goes! Vietnamese it's probably never to recover, due to extreme censorship. Also, thanks for the City of Violence love! 😄

excellent interview! yes! without the peking opera element the HK cinema evolution would have been completely different. teachers like Yu Jim-Yuen, Fan Fok-Fah, Tang Ti, Yuen Siu-Tin, and a few others brought legit northern style peking opera to HKG, raised a generation of kids who trained under poverty conditions, and then were able to transition to cinema. and the rest is history... 😜

I do not agree at all that Jackie looks awkward with shapes! No idea where you got that impression...Fearless Hyena, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow which you mention, Drunken Master 1 and 2, Young Master! No...just no!
