John Sweeney's latest book Killer in the Kremlin explores Vladimir Putin's career, from KGB agent to becoming Russia's president.
Discussing extract of the book, Sweeney said:
"Putin is not mad in the clinical psychiatric sense," and the Russian withdrawal from the battle of Kyiv is evidence of that.
He added that Putin is "much weaker than we think he is."
Detailing how Putin's face had changed since he met him following the shooting down of MH17, Sweeney said that the defeat of the Russian army this winter or spring "will have a catastrophic effect" on Russia's president.

We should have stood up to Tsar Putin many years ago. Our laidback approach encouraged him to push forward. For many years I have been saying that it is a bad decision for countries, such a Germany and Italy, to become dependant upon Russian fossil fuel and selling/buying them so many goods. Weak, ineffective, governments and the United Nations have allowed this to happen 😢

They technically aren't wrong. The Ruble is strong right now and EU support is extremely lackluster and at times flippant at best. The caveat is that the Ruble is artificially strong and EU support is starting to improve as they wake up to the fact that this isn't going away over night like Crimea or Georgia with them having to do something more than just light the Eifel Tower up in yellow and blue.

On the other side EU has absorbed millions of refugees ( women and children ). In Germany they are given places to stay paid by the govt., a monthly allowance which is only reserved for German citizens, fully state financed German language courses etc. this runs into a fair amount of money. The Ukrainians also have a huge problem of Russian infiltration into their military setup. Weapons are sent over only to be blasted by the Russians. Hence selensky has been forced to purge his secret service etc. of traitors. Of course Putin is first and and foremost a trained criminal. He’s had so many of his Opponents, even in foreign countries, murdered. Merkel in Germany chose to ignore this as long as cheap gas was delivered. She had a phrase „Wandel durch Handel“ which means change through trade. A mistake that we are all paying a high price for.

YES! At last somebody talking sense and no nieve interviewer giving crass, inane politically correct retorts. Whether you want an enemy or not whether you want a war or not doesn't matter. Putin is the enemy of the west and at war with the west, that is his choice and his decision. We have to see that ,live with that and a adapt to that and either win or lose. My view as a grandad is that losing is not an option - particularly not as in every resourse but one we are 20x more powerful than Putin.. What is that one resourse you ask? It is the ability and willingness to dip into and exploit the power of evil.

You make it sound like the Ukrainians had a choice and chose to stand up to Putin. If Putin had minded his own businesses and stayed on his side of the border the Ukrainians would have done nothing to counter what Putin has been doing for decades. You can admire the Ukrainian grit in this fight, but people need to quit making them out to be some bastion of democracy that threw down the gauntlet to save the West; simply put, they were unfortunate enough not to have chosen to join NATO when they had the chance (like Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, etc.) and found themselves as a testing ground between NATO and totalitarian regimes in the East. @@thomscott1247 really? Was that the reason? I thought it was because they were going to join NATO. Or they were developing biological weapons. Or they wanted to get nuclear weapons. Or the government was full of Nazis (especially the Jewish President) It's more convincing if you come up with the reasons before you start the training exercise that's definitely not going to become an invasion that's followed by the special military operation that's definitely not a war that starts with the (failed) attack on Kyiv that was definitely a feint. Either way, God forbid they should prepare to get rid of foreign backed separatists on their own land! @KileyLagan
@KileyLagan 2 года назад
In between University & St. Petersburg, he was a junior KGB clerk in East Germany where he fully participated in the massive KGB Black Market trade. Goods from Western Europe passed through his office daily. No wonder he was upset the Berlin Wall fell. He had a good life there. Those skills eventually got him to the top in government.
@edmurth
@edmurth 2 года назад
@@KileyLagan yeah, I knew about his time in east Germany where he was supposedly an adviser to the Stasi, when you think what the Stasi and the KGB were doing in east Germany at the time like supporting the Red Army Faction and funding neo Nazis in west Germany it’s no surprise to see the tactics Russia now uses in its propaganda. The story you often here about how he became president after Yeltsin is he was trusted to not arrest (or worse) any of Yeltsin family for corruption but there’s good reason to believe it was a proverbial gun to the head rather than trust and Putin and the FSB effectively organised a coup. The mafia culture, particularly in east Russia is not something you hear much of in the western press and this was the first time I’ve heard of a direct relationship like that with Putin.

When the US military is allowed to flex and has the political will to back it up, it is a much different story. Just ask Saddam Hussein... oh wait, never mind. Excellent interview with this man John Sweeney. Time well spent. Thank you Times Radio for this. Sweeney's assessments of Putin I couldn't agree with any more than I do. He's right on. It's obvious he's well corroborated his own theories, and thoughts on the subject. In addition he's gone into these places and witnessed that of which he's speaking of so instant respect there from me. As for Vladimir Putin, I watched for many years dating back to when Yeltsin appointed him as his successor, and even before that. I knew that Putin as a former KGB operative was never comforted by the fall of the Soviet Union, and how it had fragmented. I knew it had to have had a profound impact on him as it truly was, " his family ". This was so easily to be seen. This was a guy, and an eventual Russian leader that could never be trusted. Yet, I watched him manipulate, and navigate the Western World, American President after American President, along with other naive Western European leaders presenting himself deftly as a world statesman. For me, when he fixed his earlier, " election ", by appointing Medvedev to the Russian Presidency, and then Medvedev appointed him to the Prime Minister position, that just confirmed for me where this was all heading. He attained the confidence in knowing how easily he could shape the West. I believe this was all around 2004. When after his half hearted charade of a democratic electoral process re-installed him as the new Russian President. President Bush stating, ' I looked into his eyes, and could see his soul ", literally made me nauseous. I knew what we had on our hands. I cannot believe we permitted ( we meaning all of the West ) this guy to continue to operate unabated as he was for all of this time. I knew I just couldn't be the only one out there knowing this. In listening to John Sweeney here, I believe now that perhaps I wasn't. It provides however no relief. Now, we've absolutely got to clean this mess up. Together, right now. Thank you, Glory to God, Victory for Ukraine, Rise Free Nations!

13:57 “ Putin is bad but not mad”. I wouldn’t take too much comfort from this. Hopefully his generals will not allow it.

No-one seems to be suggesting that comfort should be taken from awareness of existing realities. Indeed, it is only through awareness and acknowledgement of the realities, including that foremost reality of the potential for nuclear war, that the response can be determined. It is only by acknowledgment of and facing such realities that appropriate responses can be developed. Nuclear war is only a much l;arger reality than war fought with conventional weapons. The reality has to be faced in whatever form it takes. Just because nuclear weapons are threatened definitely does not constitute a reason for capitulation. In fact, I believe, the very opposite applies, which is a more determined return attack on the perpetrator. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 VICTORY for UKRAINE 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
