I find that oil based poly turns quite yellow over time. Water based poly will stay clear.

I know this is an old video, but thanks for the info on what you use to seal the cark. My in-laws live part of the year in a cabin and on their property, they have western cedars. My father-in-law cuts slices for me to engrave. Always struggled with keeping the bark on.....now I know how....thanks!

Great work mate... I have a rough sawn red gum slab I am using to build a table. I have sanded the top and it is ready to seal with marine grade varnish. Do you think I can seal the bottom without sanding it, just for protection? Would it work out? Thank you.

Is there a way to avoid the wet shininess and give it more of a natural matte finish?

Matt, have you tried other finishes to see how well they seal the bark edges in comparison to this oil-based product you're using?
@xadanimatt
@xadanimatt 7 лет назад
this was a first time for me, do you have any recommendations?
@ApexWoodworks
@ApexWoodworks 7 лет назад
Not really, Vic... but I've put this question out on the Canadian Woodworking and Home Improvement magazine's on-line fourm and will let you know what recommendations come forward. The concern I have with leaving the bark on - even with applying finishes to it - is for it to come off when things dry out more.

Did the bark stay on? I’m making a table with a wood round and I’d like to keep the bark on but my fear is that stated above.

So this works well to seal the bark and keep it from falling off?
@HEYVIET
@HEYVIET 7 лет назад
I've been doing a lot of research on sealing bark to my live edge tables. Did the bark stay on with just the poly coat? I would imagine that it would flake off with time. I ended up using a 2 part epoxy resin to seal my bark which holds up great with time. Then i used a wipe on satin poly for the top. Also, do you have a pic of the fully dried slab? Seems like it was still wet at the end of the video. I'm interested to see how spar urethane looks fully set.
@xadanimatt
@xadanimatt 7 лет назад
Using Epoxy resin is for sure the better way. The slab was not fully dried as it was an outdoor piece but the spar urethane set perfectly to my surprise. The Bark is still attached :)

I sanded my wood piece until it's pretty smooth. Then coat it with 5 coats of semi gloss polyurethane. It doesn't seemed to be sealed yet. It still has that dry wood texture. help :(
@MermaidGunner
@MermaidGunner 4 года назад
Hey, I’m not sure if your channel is still active or not but will adding the polyurethane keep the bark from falling off? I have a wood shelf I’m trying to do and I’d love to keep the bark but am not sure how to prevent the bark from falling off. Help!

@IGotGoodWood311
@IGotGoodWood311 7 лет назад
Matt Vinc I read where you said that the slice had dried for about a year prior to you shooting this video, did you treat it with anything to prevent cracking? I just cut six 36"-48" cookie slices of Oak ranging from 4"-6" thickness yesterday, and am trying to get as much info as I can to hopefully in a year or two make them into tables...
@xadanimatt
@xadanimatt 7 лет назад
I used "wood juice" while it was drying out, It was all the way dry but its an out door piece. You can try a de humidifier to help expedite the drying process. I would also recommend sealing the end grain.
@chengliu872

Does the urethane have to be brushed on or can it be sprayed on with a paint sprayer?
